AUDITION REQUIREMENTS – GUITAR

The applicant should demonstrate good pitch discrimination and rhythmic sense and must

have previous knowledge of and a genuine interest in classical guitar. The applicant

should be able to read conventional music notation in treble clef. Rudimentary keyboard is

strongly recommended, inasmuch as all non-keyboard majors must pass a piano

proficiency examination by the end of eleventh grade. The audition should be performed

on a standard classical guitar (nylon strings).

follows:

I. Compulsory Scales

The applicant will execute the following scales in eighth notes at MM quarter note =

120: C Major (two octaves), A minor (two octaves), A Major, D Major, F Major (one

octave), E chromatic. Right hand fingering-i,m.

Arpeggios – Pima, pimami in C Major and A minor – common chords.

II. Compulsory Solo Repertoire

The applicant must perform any two (2) selections from A Modern Approach to Classical

Guitar – Part One (Repertory) by Charles Duncan, No. HL00699204. This music should be

Audition Requirements – Piano

I. Technique The audition committee will request scales and arpeggios for the appropriate grade at random to be executed from memory. The successful applicant will demonstrate use of proper fingering, clarity and accuracy of execution, and the ability to execute the requirements at a consistent tempo.

Applicants to Grades 7 and 8 Scales: White key major and harmonic minor – two octaves, hands together in eighth notes at MM quarter note = 120 8

II. Repertoire ALL REPERTOIRE is expected to be performed from memory. Any exceptions to the below repertoire must be approved by the Alabama School of Fine Arts Department of Music PRIOR to the audition.

Applicants to Grades 7 and 8 Two pieces: 1) A work by J.S. Bach chosen from one of the following sources: the Two and Three-Part Inventions; a movement from a French Suite, English Suite, or Partita; the W.F. Bach Notebook; a more difficult work from the Anna Magdalena Notebook; or a movement from The Well-Tempered Clavier. -or- A sonata by Domenico Scarlatti or Jiri Benda, or a comparable sonatina.

2) A work of contrasting style of the applicant’s choice. Works from method books are not acceptable for this requirement. Suggestions for repertoire would include a movement of a sonata or sonatina, a Romantic character piece by Schumann, or twentieth-century works by Dello Joio, Kabalevsky, or Khatchaturian. Appropriate sources of repertoire would also include Piano Literature Volumes 3 and 4 edited by James Bastien, which are published by Kjos.

Applicants to Grade 9+ Three pieces: 1) A contrapuntal work of J.S. Bach 2) A movement of a Classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. A movement of an advanced Classical sonatina might also be acceptable, but approval should be secured from the music department prior to the audition. 3) A contrasting work of the applicant’s choice, which represents a composer from the nineteenth or twentieth centuries.

Audition Requirements – Piano

I. Technique The audition committee will request scales and arpeggios for the appropriate grade at random to be executed from memory. The successful applicant will demonstrate use of proper fingering, clarity and accuracy of execution, and the ability to execute the requirements at a consistent tempo.

Applicants to Grades 7 and 8 Scales: White key major and harmonic minor – two octaves, hands together in eighth notes at MM quarter note = 120 8

th Grade applicants: Add Bb, Eb, and Ab major

Arpeggios: White key major and minor tonic triads, cross-hands, 4 octaves, in triplets at MM quarter note = 60

Applicants to Grade 9 Scales: White key major and harmonic minor, and Bb, Eb, Ab, and Db major – two octaves, hands together in sixteenth notes at MM quarter note = 76

Arpeggios: White key major and minor, hands together, two octaves in sixteenth notes at MM quarter note = 60 Cross-hand arpeggios are not acceptable.

II. Repertoire ALL REPERTOIRE is expected to be performed from memory. Any exceptions to the below repertoire must be approved by the Alabama School of Fine Arts Department of Music PRIOR to the audition.

Applicants to Grades 7 and 8 Two pieces: 1) A work by J.S. Bach chosen from one of the following sources: the Two and Three-Part Inventions; a movement from a French Suite, English Suite, or Partita; the W.F. Bach Notebook; a more difficult work from the Anna Magdalena Notebook; or a movement from The Well-Tempered Clavier. -or- A sonata by Domenico Scarlatti or Jiri Benda, or a comparable sonatina.

2) A work of contrasting style of the applicant’s choice. Works from method books are not acceptable for this requirement. Suggestions for repertoire would include a movement of a sonata or sonatina, a Romantic character piece by Schumann, or twentieth-century works by Dello Joio, Kabalevsky, or Khatchaturian. Appropriate sources of repertoire would also include Piano Literature Volumes 3 and 4 edited by James Bastien, which are published by Kjos.

Applicants to Grade 9+ Three pieces: 1) A contrapuntal work of J.S. Bach 2) A movement of a Classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. A movement of an advanced Classical sonatina might also be acceptable, but approval should be secured from the music department prior to the audition. 3) A contrasting work of the applicant’s choice, which represents a composer from the nineteenth or twentieth centuries.

III. Sight-Reading The applicant will be given 60 seconds to study and then perform a musical excerpt of commensurate difficulty. *Please bring a list of all repertoire (Composer – Name of Piece) played in the last three years to the audition.

Audition Requirements – Piano

I. Technique The audition committee will request scales and arpeggios for the appropriate grade at random to be executed from memory. The successful applicant will demonstrate use of proper fingering, clarity and accuracy of execution, and the ability to execute the requirements at a consistent tempo.

Applicants to Grades 7 and 8 Scales: White key major and harmonic minor – two octaves, hands together in eighth notes at MM quarter note = 120 8

th Grade applicants: Add Bb, Eb, and Ab major

Arpeggios: White key major and minor tonic triads, cross-hands, 4 octaves, in triplets at MM quarter note = 60

Applicants to Grade 9 Scales: White key major and harmonic minor, and Bb, Eb, Ab, and Db major – two octaves, hands together in sixteenth notes at MM quarter note = 76

Arpeggios: White key major and minor, hands together, two octaves in sixteenth notes at MM quarter note = 60 Cross-hand arpeggios are not acceptable.

Applicants to Grade 10+ All twenty-four major and harmonic minor scales and tonic triad arpeggios– four octaves, hands together in sixteenth notes at MM quarter note = 72 Cross-hand arpeggios are not acceptable.

II. Repertoire ALL REPERTOIRE is expected to be performed from memory. Any exceptions to the below repertoire must be approved by the Alabama School of Fine Arts Department of Music PRIOR to the audition.

Applicants to Grades 7 and 8 Two pieces: 1) A work by J.S. Bach chosen from one of the following sources: the Two and Three-Part Inventions; a movement from a French Suite, English Suite, or Partita; the W.F. Bach Notebook; a more difficult work from the Anna Magdalena Notebook; or a movement from The Well-Tempered Clavier. -or- A sonata by Domenico Scarlatti or Jiri Benda, or a comparable sonatina.

2) A work of contrasting style of the applicant’s choice. Works from method books are not acceptable for this requirement. Suggestions for repertoire would include a movement of a sonata or sonatina, a Romantic character piece by Schumann, or twentieth-century works by Dello Joio, Kabalevsky, or Khatchaturian. Appropriate sources of repertoire would also include Piano Literature Volumes 3 and 4 edited by James Bastien, which are published by Kjos.

Applicants to Grade 9+ Three pieces: 1) A contrapuntal work of J.S. Bach 2) A movement of a Classical sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven. A movement of an advanced Classical sonatina might also be acceptable, but approval should be secured from the music department prior to the audition. 3) A contrasting work of the applicant’s choice, which represents a composer from the nineteenth or twentieth centuries.

Singers under the age of fourteen are advised against auditioning in voice. Males may not audition

until the voice has changed. Inasmuch as keyboard facility is integral to the study of voice and

music theory, all singers are encouraged to have some piano student prior to the audition. The
