AACAAS President's Report
James D. Jones, Jr.
2010 - 2011
The last three years have been great. The last three years have also flown by like the
wind. I’ve learned much about our organization and NACAA in the process. We are a
close family of agricultural professionals and I am proud to say I am a member of the
Alabama Agricultural Agents and Specialist Association.
With that said we have a tremendous task before our organization in preparing for the
NACAA 2014 meetings in Mobile. AACAAS is “ALL IN” for 2014 in Mobile. We
have begun the process of preparing for this event by putting together a great team to
lead us in Jim Todd and Danny Cain. They will and have put together a further
leadership team to address every area of the national meeting to make our 2014
NACAA AM/PIC the best meeting the south has ever put together. We will in turn
show off the State of Alabama, AACAAS and Auburn and Alabama A&M Universities.
In the past year we have had many milestones for this organization. One was our bid
for the national meeting being accepted by the NACAA in Tulsa. Secondly, the large
number of national awards winners in Tulsa which says volumes about our
membership. Finally, AACAAS member elected the first female president of this
organization in Kim Wilkins to lead us into the future. I would like to personally
congratulate each of the new Officers and Directors elected to serve in the coming year.
Our organization has been placed in good hands with Kim and the 2011-2012 Officers
and Directors.
One honor bestowed on the acting president is put on an annual meeting during his and
now her year of presidency. I would like to thank the team I assembled to make your
stay in Eufaula such an enjoyable event. I will start with thanking the planning team of
Rachel Dykes, Mary Baltikauski, William Birdsong, Neal Kelly, David Koon, Brandon
Dillard, Rickey Hudson, Derek Bryan, Doug Summerford, and Shae Windham. Mary
and Rachel did a super job on the Spouse’s Tour of Eufaula. William and Brandon
provided a great Agronomy tour of the Cocoran Farms and produce facilities. Rickey
Hudson cooked a great lunch served on the farm during the tour. Derek hosted the
golfers on the first day and led the Wildlife Tour on tour day. Doug and Shae took the
Youth Tour to Westville and Providence Canyon in Georgia and added water safety and
wildlife the second day. Neal Kelly led the skeet shooting expedition and David Koon
the fishing tourney. David also receives my many thanks for the countless other favors
the host county provided from chairs to other items. You can see it takes a multitude of
folks to pull this event off and I thank each and every one of my team from Southeast
Alabama. I would also add a special thanks to Dick Hambley for all his work on the
program and sponsors ads. I may also add thanks to many local volunteers who
decorated and cooked at the different events in Eufaula.
Finally, I would like to thank the AACAAS membership for having faith in me during
my term as President of AACAAS. Your confidence has helped me much during the
4
past year. Also, special thanks to our Treasurer Rickey Hudson and Past President
Ricky Colquitt for their mentoring of this president. Again, we are a close family and I
am proud to be a member of the AACAAS.

life members and farms from around the state. Borden Dairy, Kelley Meats, McEwen & Sons, Smith Farms, Mike
Reeves, Harvest Select Catfish, and Mayfield Dairy lead the way with food contributions. As always our own
Extension Administration was very supportive of this event and special thanks goes out to Dr. Gaines Smith for
approving financial and travel support. The 2012 CAK will again be held at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange
Beach, Alabama.
The following is a list of monetary contributors to include active members, life members, ACES administration, and
sponsors. ACES Administration provided CAK reimbursements of $1000.00 (does not include travel of those
working the CAK). 64 active members donated $1595, 15 life members donated $375, 2 non-members donated $50,
and sponsors, Alabama Pork Producers and the Marshall Co. Poultry & Egg Association, donated a total of $400.
There was a total of $3,420 worth of monetary donations in 2011.

2011 Teaching and Education Technology Committee Report
This committee encourages AACAAS members to submit the results of demonstrations and
applied research to the Journal of NACAA which is published annually by the NACAA.
Cell phones and SouthernLinc radios are critical tools for REA’s and CEC’s. As this equipment
ages, it will require repair and replacement. Additional resources may be needed for Ken Jordan
and other staff so that they can continue to provide repairs, parts, and accessories for this
equipment. We encourage the administration to develop a policy of regularly scheduled
replacement of mobile communication tools.
This committee commends the Computer Technology Unit for its excellent performance in
supporting Extension agents with computer troubleshooting and service.
This committee commends the administration for the implementation of video conference
technology in many county offices and regional extension centers. This technology has been
adopted well by the extension staff and is helping reduce travel costs during the current
economic conditions.
We recommend upgrading all counties with DSL internet service to a T1 line or better. As video
conferencing and other high-bandwidth technologies become more common, a better internet
connection will be critical. In offices that have older Polycomm units, we recommend the prompt
repair or replacement of that equipment.
Our committee encourages Extension employees to use blogs, web pages, online video, and
social media to deliver programs. These tools will likely grow in importance in coming years.
This committee recommends that the cost of professional certifications for CEC’s and REA’s,
such as Certified Crop Advisor, should be reimbursed by Extension.

The Committee is proud to announce the winners of the 2011 Distinguished Service Awards and
the Achievement Award.
Distinguished Service Award Winners AchievementAward Winners Tony Glover – District I Stephen Enloe
Charlie Mitchell – District II
Anthony Wiggins – District III
The Committee has been working with the Association Officers and Board of Directors to
determine a fair and equitable way to choose DSA Winners. The Association currently has 3
Districts and in the past each District is usually able to select one DSA winner. With lower
membership numbers the number of DSAs that can be awarded may vary from year to year.
The Committee recommends to the Association Officers, Board, and Membership that a
statewide process be developed to ensure the winners consider the award to be the highest honor
a member can receive and that each member would have an opportunity to be considered for the
award (having met the guidelines of the National and State Association.)
2011 Hall of Fame
The Committee is proud to announce the 2011 Hall of Fame winner as Charles R. Moody of
Cherokee County.

Thomas (Tom) Calvin Casaday
He was a good son. One of five children born to Clifton Floyd Casaday, Sr. and his wife
Gussie Davis. Grew up on a farm in Macon County, AL. Knew what it was like to labor in the
fields in the stifling heat of August. Much influenced by his Mother, daughter of a Confederate
veteran and former school teacher. Instilled in Tom and his two brothers and two sisters a desire
for education. Reared in the Great Depression. All of the children completed college.
He was a good soldier. Drafted into the United States Army shortly after high school
graduation in 1943 at the age of eighteen. After basic training, he was sent overseas to fight in
the Burma-India campaign. Honorable discharged in 1946.
He was a good husband and father. Married Dot Miller on November 22, 1958. A
partnership that has lasted over fifty years. Devoted father to Warren and Tommy. He was a
“hands on father”, always put their happiness above all else. He was their mentor; several
mottos, two in particular: “Go with confidence”, “Is your goal to win the battle or win the war”.
Both Warren and Tommy say, “Dad was my best friend”.
He was faithful in every aspect of his life. Professional Life: As a County Agent of the
Extension Service, career of 37 years, 30 of which were in Coffee County. His work was never a
chore; it was his joy. Never really got away from it, even on vacation. Dot’s story of having to
be on the lookout for pay phones while the family traveled before the days of cell phones. His
genuine belief that what he did as an Extension agent made a difference for the better, not only
for the farmers but for American society. Second Career: In real estate, 15 years. One of the
top producers, brought to this career the idea of service in the same manner as ACES. Loyalty
to Auburn University: Three degrees including two graduate degrees, masters and Education
Specialist. Commitment to Christ and His Church: Became a Presbyterian, served as an
elder in this body, Sunday School Superintendent. He served faithfully until the end.
He was a Good and Faithful Man Because of his Servant’s Heart. He knew that whatever
he had been given were his to use in the service of his Master, Jesus Christ. On the early
morning of May 21, 2010, Thomas Calvin Casaday heard his Master call, “Come, Tom, and
share your Master’s happiness”.

Jerry Russell Crews
Jerry Russell Crews, known to many in extension as “Crews” was good.
You can fill in the blank… a good…husband, father, friend, specialist, economist, cook, hunter,
fisherman, neighbor, mentor, etc.
There are a number of people that we work with that express themselves in as few of words as possible.
When they describe someone or something, it is in simple, efficient terms. For example, when someone
or something is good…that is the highest/best. There are some that would use terms such as the superior,
excellent, expert, exceptional, etc. and those can certainly be used but I can imagine that Crews would be
pleased to be described as “good” a term that reflects the people of his upbringing and that he spent his
career helping.
From humble beginnings in southeast Georgia near Nahunta, Crews went far. Like many rural south
Georgia Ag students, Jerry began his college education at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College or
ABAC in Tifton where he earned an Associate degree. Then on to Athens and The University of Georgia
for a BS and MS. Eventually he completed his PhD at Auburn. But the formal education is not what made
Jerry good. Jerry was good because he genuinely cared. People can sense when someone really wants to
help and will go above and beyond what is expected…this was Jerry and people knew this.
Jerry served as an unofficial mentor to me. I spent a lot of time listening and watching and hopefully
learning from him. He was great role model on how to be a good Extension economist and agent to many
in Alabama and across the Southeast.
It was obvious that Jerry was at home anywhere he went. People from all walks of life embraced Jerry
and the message he carried. The tobacco barns back home in Nahunta to catfish ponds in west Alabama
and everywhere in between served as his classroom but the front porch of Comer Hall was special. I can
honestly say I received some of my most valuable education during the time on the porch of Comer Hall
with Jerry Crews.
Jerry passed away on his 57th birthday, November 29, 2010.
He began his career with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System on November 1, 1977 and served
for over 27 years retiring in December 2003. He touched, cared and made a difference in many lives over
this time.
Behind every good man is a good woman and that is certainly an understatement in this case. Jerry left
behind a good wife, Karen and two sons, Josh and Justin.
When I think of Jerry, I can’t help but to think of the lyric from the great philosopher and song writer
Jimmy Buffet
“Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic but I had a good life all the way.”
Jerry Russell Crews did good and was good.

Qwinn R. Ezell
(1930 – 2010)
“Coach, I need help!” Gwinn Ezell was often called coach by his 4-H members as he came to Extension
as a former science teacher and coach. And, coaching is what he did best.
He was appointed as a 4-H agent in Hale County in 1962 and began his career of mentorship to the young
men in Hale County, teaching life lessons of citizenship and leadership. Those young men excelled in
public speaking and parliamentary procedure. They were recognized as being great youth.
Ezell was promoted to county agent coordinator in 1981 and served in that position until his retirement in
1990. He continued to work as the coach of Hale County within Extension.
Ezell received the 4-H Achievement Award in 1986 from the Alabama Association of County Agriculture
Agents. He received the 4-H Merit Award in 1980 from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System
Employees Organization. In 1989, he received the Hale County Farm City Supporter of Agriculture
Award recognizing him for his tireless efforts.
He received an outstanding service certificate in 1993 from the Hale County Board of Education, and in
2008 was inducted into the Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame.
Gwinn Russell Ezell was born on April 15, 1i30, to Frank and Ila Ezell in Grove Hill, Alabama. After
high school graduation in 1949, he attended and graduated from Alabama A&M University with a BS in
agriculture. Afterwards, he served two years in the U. S. Army (1954 – 1956). He received his Master’s
in Education degree in vocational and agricultural education from Tuskegee University (1980).
After his death in December 2010, he was honored by the Greensboro Tree Commission for his long
service on that commission. A dogwood was planted at the Una Martin Park in his memory.
Mr. Gwinn Ezell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Irma Ezell who lives in Greensboro, Alabama.
“Do all you can and then a little more. Mortan man can do no more than this,” is a quote from Ezell’s
retirement speech. It’s a great honor to recognize this man who always gave “a little more” by placing his
name on the dedicatory plaque of the Extension Memorial Chapel.

Emmett C. Farrington
(1917 – 2010)
Emmett Farrington was a native of Blount County where he was born in Blountsville in 1917. He
grew up on his parents' farm and helped to raise corn and cotton. Influenced by his farming
background, Farrington later decided to attend Auburn University and major in agriculture
science.
In 1943 he married and entered the Army after being drafted before his graduation. Farrington
was a veteran of World War II having served in the Philippines where he rose to the rank of first
lieutenant of field artillery. He later served two years as first lieutenant in the Army during the
Korean Conflict.
Following his military service he decided to put his agricultural background to use and applied
for work with the Cooperative Extension Service and was assigned to work in Cleburne County
on September 1, 1946 as an Assistant Extension Agent.
One of Farrington's main responsibilities was to work with 4-H members in all the clubs. This
was no small task because when Farrington first came to Cleburne County, there were 12
elementary schools (some junior) and two high schools.
By the time of his retirement on June 30, 1977, Farrington had served his county and country for
31 years, worked with over 5,000 4-H members, assisted with 4-H camps and organized
numerous 4-H rallies and other activities. His contribution to developing the character and
abilities of these young people has made a lasting, positive impact.
Farrington also worked with farmers to diversify agricultural practices, increase poultry and beef
production and improve pasture development, including hay and grain crops. Because of his
many contributions to 4-H, he was honored with a reception on July 29, 2009, sponsored by the
Cleburne County Extension Office. He received a proclamation from the Cleburne County
Commission and the "Key to the City" from the Mayor as July 29 was proclaimed Emmett
Farrington Day in Heflin.
On Nov. 12, 2009 Farrington was inducted into the Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame. This special
honor is given to those individuals who have had a significant impact on the 4-H Youth
Development Program, its members and leaders. This recognition pays tribute to those such as
Farrington who have influenced the lives of Alabama youth by their commitment "To Make the
Best Better."
Emmett Farrington passed away on July 23, 2010 at the age of 92. He was a resident of Heflin
most of his life and member of the First United Methodist Church of Heflin.

Glenn B. Handley
(1924 – 2010)
Glen Boyd Handley was born March 6, 1924 in Tallapoosa County, Camp Hill, Alabama. He
was the youngest of three children born to William Bedford Handley and Annie Lucille Strozier Handley.
Glen had a sister, Katherine Handley Jamison and a brother, William Thomas.
The house Glenn was born and reared in was on Handley Farm located in the Sandy Creek
Community in Tallapoosa County near Camp Hill. His father was born in 1893 in the same house, which
has the number “1890” carved above the front door facing. This house and farm is still in the Handley
family today.
Glenn finished high school in Camp Hill and received a BS degree in Agricultural Science in
1948 from the Alabama Polytechnic Institute in Auburn, Alabama. He also did graduate work at the
University of Colorado.
Shortly after graduation, Glenn began his Extension career in 1948 as Assistant County Agent in
Crenshaw County, Luverne, Alabama. In 1950, he married Mary Hawkins, of Luverne and they became
the parents of two sons, Boyd (1956) and Nix (1962-1984). Boyd is a geologist and after finishing law
school became a corporate lawyer in Houston, Texas. Boyd has a son, Ford, 23, and a daughter, Caytlin,
17.
Recalling Glenn’s 30 years with the Extension Service in Crenshaw County, he worked primarily
with 4-H Club youth, but worked also with adults in the agricultural field. Top priorities in the 4-H field
were public speaking, swine, beef, and peanut production, as well as tractor driving. The county 4-H
youth were awarded numerous county and district awards in these fields, producing eight state winners
and one national winner.
Glenn was the recipient of the 4-H and Youth Development Certificate of Achievement in 1960.
He was also awarded the Alabama Outstanding 4-H Agent Service Award that year at the annual meeting
of the County Agents Convention in Birmingham.
Handley received the Alabama Association of County Agricultural Agents and Specialists
(AACAAS) Distinguished Service Award in 1974. Later that year, he was awarded the National
Distinguished Service Award at the National Association of County Agricultural Agents in Tucson,
Arizona. He was chosen for his records of accomplishments and exceptional service to the people of the
county in which he worked. Glenn was a Life Member of AACAAS. In 1975, he was the recipient of the
Farm Agent 4-H Recognition Award. He was also a member of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association for
many years.
During his career, Handley accompanied local 4-H Club youth delegates to three major events: to
the 4-H Club Congress held in Chicago, IL; Fork Collins, Colo., Public Speaking; and Tractor Driving
Competition in Richmond, VA.
The Crenshaw County Commission, in 1979, expressed to Mr. Handley “their gratitude and
appreciation for his effective work with the boys and girls of the county involved in 4-H Club activities.”
Each member commended him for the excellent performance and the dedicated service of his duties
throughout the years of his work.
After retiring, Glenn was named Crenshaw County membership chairman in 1983 for the Auburn
University Agricultural Alumni Association. He also served as a member of that association’s Board of
Directors in 1987.
In the community, Glenn received the Distinguished Service Award for his work with the
Alabama Society for Crippled Children, where he also served for many years as co-chairman.
Glenn was a long-time active member and Deacon of The First Baptist Church in Luverne. He
was a charter member of the Luverne Rotary Club and served as president in 1958. Handley was a former
member of the Crenshaw County Hospital Board, and also served on the County board of Registrars for a
60
number of years. Following his retirement on March 31, 1979, he was employed by Luverne Bank &
Trust Company for a short period of time.
Mr. Handley, 86, passed away on June 14, 2010, in Luverne following declining health of several
years. He and his wife, Mary, had been married for 59 ½ years.

Alan M. Matthews
(1923 – 2010) Allen McLeod Matthews was born on November 14, 1923 to Albert Sidney and Juddie Williams
Matthews in Leroy, Alabama. The youngest of seven children, he was raised during the
Depression on a farm in Southwest, Alabama. Despite difficult economic conditions, he and
four of his brothers and sisters graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute as Auburn was
then known. He never forgot his high school alma mater (1942), Leroy High School, and took
great pride in its many recent athletic successes including several state championships.
After entering Auburn in the summer of 1942, he joined the Army and served in the 102nd
Infantry Division known as the Ozarks, 308th
Field Artillery Battalion. When he returned after
the war, he resumed his education at Auburn, graduating in 1947. He soon married the love of
his life, Jeanette Carleton and began a memorable career in Extension. Allen served 14 years in
Pickens and Greene Counties before serving as Houston County Coordinator for almost 25 years.
He was awarded the Distinguished Service in 1962.
Fellow co-worker Rayfield Vester stated, “He was a Christian man. I never saw him and or
heard him criticize anyone. He was a compassionate person and good leader. He loved
agriculture and the people of Houston County. He was a student of history. He gave critical
thought to an issue before making a tough decision. He trained many young agents in Houston
County who became successful in their careers. Mr. Matthews was in charge of Houston County
Extension Office during the trying years of integration. His tolerance for doing what’s right
superseded negative community pressures.”
His legacy in Houston County will be hard to repeat and will be remembered for years. As a
member of the Dothan Kiwanis Club, he and Dr. Coy Poitevint started the Houston County Fat
Calf Show which has been going on for 44 years. Richard Murphy, retired Houston County,
found Allen Matthews to be a great writer. It was very easy for him to express his thoughts on
paper. He wrote a weekly column for The Dothan Eagle, keeping folks informed about farming
in Houston County. He often included his experiences from a visit to Ole Buddy in Beat 13. His
Ole Buddy was a farmer in Houston County whom Mr. Matthews thought a lot of. Ole Buddy
often gave him fresh produce from the garden, fruit from the orchard, or pecans in the fall of the
year. Ole Buddy always gave a report of how things were on the farm – how the crops were
growing, was it too wet or too dry, or maybe even how some USDA program was affecting his
profit or loss on the farm. Ole Buddy seemed very real to readers of that weekly column as you
could just see them leaning over the fence talking to each other much like that famous picture
“You been farming long” of the two little boys in their overalls. By now, you probably realize
Ole Buddy was a fictitious farmer from Beat 13 in Houston County that did not exist. However,
those experiences with Ole Buddy did seem very real to those readers of that weekly column.
As an avid reader, he especially enjoyed American History and discussing family history with
nieces and nephews, whom adored him. Mr. Matthews served in various positions in First
Baptist Church in Dothan, including Deacon, Deacon Emeritus, and avidly served as Sunday
62
School Teacher. After retirement in 1985, he devoted the rest of his life to his family, church
family, Auburn sports, and Dothan Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife of years, Jeanette
Matthews formerly of Live Oaks, Florida; two sons and daughter-in-law, Larry Matthews
(Carol) of Birmingham and Ronnie Matthews of Live Oak, Florida; two grandchildren, Wesley
Matthews (Wendy) of New Orleans, LA and Jenny Matthews of Los Angeles, CA.

Joseph Heath Potter
(1970 – 2010)
Joseph Heath Potter was born and raised in the Flat rock community of Lawrence County. Heath
was around agriculture since birth. Helping around the family farm, working with 4-H, and
scouting cotton while in high school and college were all a part of his life. He also had help and
guidance from his father, Joe Potter, a County Extension Agent in Colbert County.
Heath graduated from Hatton High School in 1988. He attended Shoals Community College
where he graduated in 1990. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in horticulture in 1993 and his
master’s degree in horticulture in 1996, both from Auburn University.
Upon graduation, Heath briefly worked for the Lauderdale County Farmer’s Co-Op, leading
them to open a specialty garden center in Florence. In 2000, he accepted a position as an
Extension agent in Lawrence County, where he worked with row-crop and cattle farmers. When
he became an agent, he immediately joined AACAAS because he grew up in the organization.
He became the leader of our youth programs which he did for many years. He loved working
with young people.
Heath married Donna Norton in 1990, and they had two sons, Kamron, born in Auburn in 1996,
and Kole, born in Sheffield in 1998. They lived in the Flat Rock community where he grew up.
In addition to serving in his position as a county agent, Heath operated Kolorscapes
Landscaping, using his horticulture skills to create unique designs for his clients. After Heath
left Extension, he worked for Alfa Insurance as an agent in Moulton. His last year was working
again with farmers, selling crop insurance for Silveus Insurance Group.
Heath was a lover of the out-of-doors. He helped his dad and brother Dustin with Potter’s Mud
Creek Farm, where he helped to build a special place for family and friends to spend time
together. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends hunting, fishing, and watching and
talking about his passion, Auburn football.
Heath’s death at age 40 on July 7, 2010 was very unexpected. His love of people was evident
from the long lines at visitation and the funeral. All too comfort in the fact that he was a
practicing Christian who loved his Lord. Heath will always have a place in our hearts.

Hoyt B. Price
(1917 – 2010)
Mr. Price was born May 15, 1917 at home in Clay County, Alabama. He departed this earth on
November 26, 2010.
He graduated from Lineville High School, and then attended and graduated from Alabama
Polytechnic Institute now known as Auburn University, in 1943. Before college he worked in
the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in California fighting forest fires. He served in the
Merchant Marines during World War II.
After graduation from college, Mr. Price accepted a position teaching agriculture at Lincoln High
School in Lincoln, AL. He married Vina “Tot” Chandler in 1943. They had two sons, and later,
six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
After the war ended, he took a job with the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service as Assistant
County Agent in Lawrence County, where he worked with 4-H, as well as with farmers. In
1963, he transferred to Marion County, where he was County Extension Chairman. He worked
there until his retirement in 1977.
I first met Mr. Price when I was Assistant Superintendent of the Upper Coastal Plains
Experiment Station near Winfield. This was probably in 1970. He would come by occasionally
to see what kind of research was going on at the station. He was supportive of the beef cattle
field day and the swine field day we hosted each year.
In 1965, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the AACAA and NACAA.
It is an honor to have known Mr. Hoyt Price and to be able to present this memorial.

F. D. Robinson
Fred Dewitt (Rob) Robinson, age 89, of Ford Payne, Alabama passed away November 5, 2010.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor Bailey Robinson and son, Thomas Arthur Robinson II and his
wife Mary Alice of Hoover, AL.
Rob was born in Good Hope, in Cullman County and graduated from Cullman County High
School in 1942. He served his country in WWII from 18942 through 1946, in North Africa,
Sicily, France, and Germany in the 813th
Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was awarded the Bronze
Star, Purple Heart, American Defense Services Medal, and Silver Star.
In 1946, he graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute where he was a member and president
of Sigma Pi fraternity.
He started his career with the Auburn Extension Service in Cherokee County at Centre, AL in
1949. He then transferred to Lauderdale County in Florence, AL, and then moved over to the
Auburn Experimental Research Center in Winfield, AL. In 1953, he returned to the Auburn
University Extension Service at Tuscumbia, AL, where he was heavily involved in his church
and community. In 1965, he was appointed County Extension Chairman in DeKalb County at
Fort Payne. While in Fort Payne, he was also very involved in his church (First United
Methodist Church) and his community. He was a Fort Payne Rotarian, held many offices in the
County Agents Association – secretary/treasurer and vice president.
Rob retired in 1978 and started his own business. As an avid golfer and very good grounds man,
his business was Turf Consulting Services. Of course, he would have to play all the courses he
consulted with. He was a member of the Alabama Golf Course Superintendents Association and
the National Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. He enjoyed this business
until his second retirement in 2000.
Rob’s impact was great in all the communities he worked, especially Fort Payne and Dekalb
County. As a young agent doing 4-H Club work in 1973, he certainly had a positive impact on
my life. He lived his life with honor and integrity. When he told you something you could
depend on it to be the gospel. He was very smooth in everything he did; he did not have to get
all excited or bent out of shape to get something done. When he walked into a room, he seemed
to have everyone’s respect just by his presence. It was an honor for me to serve the people of
Dekalb County for four years under his leadership.

Manuel T. Whisenant
(1922 – 2011)
Manuel T. Whisenant, retired County Agent, passed away my first official day as coordinator in
Cullman County on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at the Morningside Assisted Living home in
Cullman, Alabama. He was born on July 24, 1922 and was preceded in death by his wife, Nell
Whisenant a very warm sweet woman who was a longtime customer of mine when I ran a
produce and plant business in Cullman. She would come buy tomato plants for Mr. Whisenant
to grow even after he was too frail to drive the car himself. Occasionally he would come with
her and I would always go to the car and just to hear old Extension stories.
They had one daughter, Emily (Stan) Chism and two sons, Phillip (Donna) and Larry (Bea)
Whisenant, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Although I enjoyed talking to Mr. Whisenant about his Extension career I did not know until
after his death that he served in WWII from December 6, 1942 to November 9, 1945 in the U.S.
Army as a Rifleman & Heavy Machine Gunner. His platoon participated in campaigns in North
Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Central Europe, and Northern France; and I am told he was especially
proud and rightfully so of having served under General Patton in one of these campaigns.
On July 1, 1954 Mr. Whisenant began working for Extension in Dekalb County. Later that year
he transferred to the Marion County office where he worked as an Assistant County Agent from
1954-1965. In 1965, he moved to Cullman County where he served as the Extension Farm
Agent from 1965-1975 and retired as the Cullman County Agent on July 31, 1977. He retired
with 31 years of service including his military service.
