Numbers and Their Significance in the Bible

Nine: As a multiple of three, nine symbolizes life ( e.g., it takes nine months for a baby to develop in the womb).

Elders live to be nine hundred years old as a symbol of wisdom (Genesis 5:5). “Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.”

Abraham received God’s Covenant when he was ninety-nine years old (Genesis 17:1). “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.”

Defeat of nine hundred chariots required divine intervention (Judges 4:3). “Because he had nine hundred chariots fitted with iron and had cruelly oppressed the Israelites for twenty years, they cried to the Lord for help.”

The Crucifixion was at the ninth hour (Mark 15:25). “It was nine in the morning when they crucified Him.”

The Holy Spirit descended at the ninth hour (Acts 2:15).

“These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It is only nine in the morning.”

THE EPISTLE

Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us. Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous!

The Reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Ephesians Chapter 5:8-19

B rethren, walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), proving what is acceptable to the Lord; and have no communion with the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them; for it is a shame even to speak of the things which they do in secret. But all things when they are exposed are made manifest by the light, for everything that is made manifest is light. Therefore he says: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon thee.” See then that you walk circumspectly, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and chanting in your heart to the Lord.

THE GOSPEL

The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke Chapter 18:35-43

At that time, when Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” And he cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me receive my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.
