Nothing pleases Sam Varghese, Managing Director, Al Hajiry Group, more than this saga of suc-cess and the promise of Al Hajiry’s continued growth.

“Our growth stemmed from the need to be self-suffi cient. We start-ed to establish businesses that both complemented current products and services or business which catered to in-house requirements instead of outsourcing,” he said explaining the vision behind such inspiring success in an interview to the Times of Oman.

Here, in an interview, the MD explains the vision, the journey, challenges, success, the ambition as well as the future plans.

It is not enough to just have a vi-sion for a new business to succeed. Utmost dedication, determination, hard work and the steely resolve to do well must all combine to attain success. Al Hajiry Group did all that and more in its brief existence of just twenty years. Today it is one of the foremost business houses in Oman, thanks largely to the vision of its Chairman Nasser bin Khamis bin Juma Al Hashar and the untiring ef-forts of his team to realise his dream.

The success has been beyond all expectations and the chairman minces no words in admitting to this heart-warming fact.

“I had a vision for the company but I never imagined we would be able to accomplish this much in such a short time frame,” he stated with a smile in an interview to the Times of Oman.

As Al Hajiry Group enters a new home and a whole new phase of growth and prom-ise, how do you feel as its Chairman? I am thankful to God. The challengesBeing a self taught businessman I have had to learn through trial and error. The biggest challenge was setting up the infrastructure. Our second challenge as a small organi-zation was to put in place the right people and processes to ensure ef-fi cient operation for growth.

Across the Middle East, drilling contractors and oil-fi eld service companies have ben-efi ted from Al Hajiry’s experience in fabrication and building of special-ized products to support them in in-creasing productivity and reducing downtime.

Integrated Management System. “With state of the art facilities at Sohar, Nizwa and WadiKabir, we are certifi ed by ASME (U) and (S), National Board (R) & (NB) Stamps for manufacture of pressure ves-sels, power boilers and high pres-sure piping.

“We are also certifi ed for the API Monograms 4F, 6A, 7K & 8C for the repair and certifi cation of mast, substructure, crownblock assem-blies, hoisting tools, drilling tools, travelling blocks, hook blocks and sheaves,” said a company offi cial.

Stage-wise inspections control every step of the manufacturing process, from raw materials to blasting and painting. The accept-ance criteria calibrated to interna-tional standards like ASME Sec-tion IX, AWS D1.1, ASME B31.3, ASME Section II, Swedish Stand-ards (SA 2.5), ASNT ASTM, deter-mine if the products pass quality control checks.

“Our quality control inspectors are certifi ed by ASNT (American Society of Non Destructive Test-ing) for NDT LEVEL – 2 in Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) Methods: RT (Radiography), MT (Magnetic Particle Inspection), VT (Visual Inspection), PT (Pen-etrant) & UT (Ultrasonic).

“We also have specialised qual-ity control inspectors who are cer-tifi ed welding inspectors (AWS (American Welding Society), cer-tifi ed welding inspector or CSWIP Level 2 welding inspector, certi-fi ed by TWI Certifi cation Ltd, UK and certifi ed painting inspectors (BGAS - CSWIP painting inspector - Grade 2).

“Our team of skilled welders (6G, 3G and 4G) is tested annually to ensure their welding meets the standards set by ASME Section IX, thus ensuring the highest quality of

fabrication,” he added.The new liquid mud plant at Sa-

fah which consists of fabrication and installation of nearly 35 tanks (API 650), storage tanks, silos and other pressure vessels is a testa-ment to our operational excellence.

Today, Al Hajiry Mechanical En-gineering is a valuable partner in providing products and services to the oil, gas and petro-chemical in-dustries. In the year 2014 alone, we manufactured nearly 800 quality controlled cabins and accessories for drilling rigs.

“Currently at Bid Bid, we are de-signing a workshop with an assem-bly line on par with global stand-ards for the fabrication of steel cabins for oil fi eld operations.”

AL HAJIRY PROJECTS: FOSTERING INNOVATION IN CONSTRUCTION“Al Hajiry Projects has earned the

recognition for undertaking large, complex projects, fostering in-novation, embracing emerging technologies, and making a dif-ference for our clients, employees and the community in which we live.” This was stated by Jason Sam Varghese, executive director, Al Hajiry Projects.

“Having the expertise to imple-ment construction practices that signifi cantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and its occu-pants, we are currently executing a project to achieve the prestig-ious LEED certifi cation. Some of the practices employed in this project include:

• Reducing pollution from construc-tion activities by controlling soil erosion, waterway sedimentation and airborne dust generation.

• Diverting construction, demoli-tion, and land clearing debris from landfi ll disposal. Redirect-ing recyclable recovered resourc-es back to the manufacturing process and redirecting re-usable materials to appropriate sites.

• Using building products that in-corporate recycled content ma-terials, therefore reducing the impacts resulting from the ex-

traction and processing of new virgin materials and by-passing energy and green house gas.

• Using building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of in-digenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts re-sulting from their transportation.

• Reducing the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous or potentially irritating and/or harm-ful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants, there-by ensuring the comfort and well being of construction workers and building occupants,” he added.

Explaining further, he said: Our ability to innovate for the benefi t

of our clients can be seen from these practices which increase effi ciency and safety while reduc-ing the dependability on man-power, thereby reducing cost.

• Engineered Formwork System in Aluminium - for speed of con-struction and lower costs as Alu-minium formwork can achieve up to two thousand uses depending

on care and application• Spray plaster - for reduced costs

due to speed and effi ciency• Laying interlock tiles using ma-

chinery instead of manpower• Using precast technology – where

the work is transferred from sites to factories with only installation at site. This improves productivity and quality and shortens construc-

tion time of a building. Precast also has lower lifetime costs as it mini-mises structural and facade main-tenance needs during years.

• Using technologies to better plan and manage construction pro-jects – Primavera , specialised ERP solutions, cloud storage and document management systems like Aconex.”

Paving the way to the futureThe Al Hajiry Roads and Bridges (R&B) division is specially struc-tured and staff ed to undertake in-frastructure projects for both gov-ernment and private sectors.

For the Rass Al Hadd, Al Su-wayh project Al Hajiry Roads & Bridges constructed 32 cell box culverts with a 2 kilometre road and 1 kilometre dyke.

“You can depend on our quali-fi ed and experienced team of en-gineers, technicians and skilled workers supported by integral infrastructure of plant, machin-ery and transport including mo-tor graders, vibratory rollers, rock breakers, wheel loaders, back hoe loaders, bull dozers, tipper trailers, tippers, vehicles, crushers,” said a

full-fl edged laboratory set-up ca-pable of testing soil, concrete and asphalt and is capable of produc-ing, supplying and laying high quality asphalt and concrete to meet the standards and require-ments necessary for Omani roads.

The Duqm Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has been making a rapid leap from the drawing board into the implementation phase. It is widely hailed as a signifi cant game-changer for Oman’s long-term economic development.

Covering an area of 1,777 sq km, with 80 kilometres of oceanfront, the Duqm SEZ is set to be the biggest economic zone in the Middle East.

Vigorous construction activi-ties are taking place at the zone with Tens of thousands of work-ers expected to be mobilized, as a number of contractors and ser-vice providers converge within the zone for construction of dif-

ferent facilities.To accommodate these blue

collar workers, Duqm Permanent Accommodation for Contractors (Duqm PAC), a joint initiative of Duqm Special Economic Zone Authority and Renaissance was set up, off ering high standards of facilities and services at unbeat-able prices.

Al Hajiry Projects plays a vital role in this project. It is re-sponsible for construction of the fi ve main accommodation blocks for 12,000 clients, a mosque and guard houses as part of the Duqm PAC for Renaissance Services SAOG. The total built up area be-ing 103,500 sqm.

Al Hajiry Roads & Bridges is further supporting the growth of this economic zone by construct-ing internal roads (9.8+20.00) KM at various locations in Duqm through phase 1& 2.

Its work involves the construc-tion of multi cell box culverts with Inlets/Outlets, Embankment fi ll-ing with Sabkha treatment, Sub base, Aggregate Base course and Bituminous Base course.

It is also responsible for the installation of road furniture like Road markings, Steel Guard rails, concrete barriers and slope pro-tection works at various locations in the road.

Al Hajiry Trading’s Industrial Products and Services Division is the only agent for SAER, the Ital-ian manufacturing giant, in Oman.

Since 1951 SAER Elettropompe has been manufacturing water electric pumps and motors for the civil, industrial, agricultural and domestic fi eld. The products are suitable for municipalities, fi re-fi ghting applications and for con-ditioning and heating, naval and mining sector.

All the products are entirely manufactured only in SAER’s four companies, established in the north of Italy.
