  • If you could take a vacation in one of the time periods discussed in this

book, which age would you visit? Plan your itinerary for the age you

    have chosen.

In what ways can the current century be considered a stone age?

As you go through a typical day, make a list of the types of stones or

products made from stones that you have contact with. Discuss your

list with your classmates. Do they mention stones or products that you

didn’t think of? What would you add to your list?

Write a paragraph that tells why you think a space

elevator is or is not a good idea.

Lodestones are rocks that are natural magnets. They are made

of a type of iron oxide that aligns itself in a north-to-south direction. People

in ancient times knew that they could use lodestones to magnetize pieces of

metal. You can demonstrate this process. With an adult, magnetize a sewing

needle by slowly stroking it in one direction on a magnet. Then use the needle

    to attract other sewing needles.

With an adult family member, repeat the hands-on

activity. Then fill a cup with water, and very carefully place the needle on

top of the water so that it floats. You may need to try this a few times in

order to get the needle to float. Observe how the needle aligns itself in a

    north-to-south direction.
