Vast plantations of palm trees, lush gardens and landscaping adds to the beauty of the city, and there are more than 70 parks equipped with leisure and entertainment facilities. In addition, there are many tourist attractions such as forts and museums, wildlife parks and archaeological sites, festivals and sports events, green areas such as Green Mubazzarah at the foot of city’s striking landmark Jebel Hafeet, as well as the spectacular sand dunes and the Hajar Mountains just outside Al Ain. The fertile soil of the area’s five oases have attracted human settlements since ancient times. These oases have been important destinations throughout history for traders’ caravans crossing the desert to buy and sell water, dates and other agricultural products. Forts & Castles Al Ain is characterised by the presence of a large number of castles and forts, ancient houses, mosques and towers of various shapes – round, square or in a spiral design. All together, there are a total of 66 historical structures; some built as homes during times of peace and others for defensive purposes during wars or to protect against raids. Other historical sites were built to serve religious and educational purposes, such as mosques. These structures are spread throughout the city and its outskirts, near oases and in villages on the fringes of Al Ain. Most of the forts and landmarks have been restored in recent years in recognition of their historical importance. Green Mubazzarah (Mabzara Al Khadhra) Following the discovery of plentiful, fresh water flowing underground in the Mubazzarah area (100-200 metres beneath the ground with capacity of 25,000 gallons per hour), the late President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan ordered the formerly dry and rocky area to be transformed into a park, which today attracts people from all over the UAE and the region to visit its greenery and naturally heated spring water. Al Ain Municipality has built a number of visitor facilities in the area, including a man-made lake, sun shades, car parks, swimming pools for men and women and one of the highest fountains in the Middle East. Visitors can go boating in the lake filled by nearby hot water springs. 0 Scale 1: 90,000 4km 073102 UAE Overview 2 Abu Dhabi Ajman Al Ain Al Dhaid Dubai Fujairah Khor Fakkan Liwa (Mezaira’a) Madinat Zayed Ras Al Khaimah Sharjah Umm Al Quwain 175 160 235 145 315 350 225 165 250 165 190 175 150 60 30 125 155 365 305 70 10 15 160 150 135 125 215 240 270 210 220 140 165 145 30 125 75 150 180 335 275 105 20 50 235 60 135 75 65 90 425 80 80 55 50 225 365 270 425 335 505 540 60 440 355 380 165 305 210 365 275 445 480 60 380 295 320 315 125 215 65 150 25 505 445 110 120 110 350 155 240 90 25 25 540 480 115 150 140 250 70 220 80 105 110 115 440 380 85 55 165 10 140 55 20 120 150 355 85 85 25 190 15 165 50 50 110 140 380 320 55 25 Abu Dhabi Ajman Al Ain Dhaid Dubai Fujairah Khor Fakkan Liwa (Mezaira’a) Madinat Zayed Ras Al Khaimah Sharjah UAE Kilometre Chart Legend Education Heritage Farm Govt Related Shopping Hotel/Resort Petrol Station Museum/Heritage Clinic Parks/Garden Oasis Place of Interest Hospital Police Station Highway/Road Number Main Road/Road Number Primary Road Other Road 127 E22 District Border Seasonal River (Wadi) Country Border/Post Tourist Information A special map licensed to Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority. Country ProfileThe United Arab Emirates (UAE) comprises seven emirates: Abu

Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah

and Fujairah. The country is a member of the Arab Gulf Co-operation

Council (GCC), an economic grouping that also includes Bahrain,

Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Spread over 87,340 square

kilometres, Abu Dhabi is the largest of the emirates, accounting

for more than 85% of the country’s total landmass. The city of Abu

Dhabi is the capital both of the emirate and of the country. It is

the federal seat of government and home to most of the ministries

and institutions, embassies, state broadcasting facilities and oil

companies. The second city is Al Ain and, as the birth place of the

late Sheikh Zayed, has special status. The population of Abu Dhabi

emirate is currently around 1.6 million and as well as having an

estimated 9% of the world’s proven oil reserves and 4% of its total

proven natural gas reserves, is now also a bustling business and

tourism hub offering a range of attractions, hotels and resorts, and

facilities for leisure and recreation. The temperate climate and the

mystique of an Arabian adventure combine to make a visit to Abu

Dhabi an irresistible choice.

CultureArchaeological discoveries suggest that fishing communities were living onthe coast in this region thousands of years ago. Once a leading exporter of pearls, Abu Dhabi gradually turned into a major trading centre and, by the end of the 19th century, it gained a reputation for its souks on the coast. The discovery of oil in 1958 had a dramatic effect on the economy of the region, bringing the prosperity that is evident today. Modern Abu Dhabi brings together old world charm and cosmopolitan chic in a clean and safe environment. It offers a distinctive blend of east and west that appeals to all types of visitors – whether seeking the adventure of a cultural experience, an action-packed holiday or simply a relaxing escape.

DressLightweight clothing is suitable most of the year, while in winter something slightly warmer may be needed, especially in the evenings. Air conditioning in hotels, shopping centres and cinemas can be extreme, so take a sweater or jacket. Good quality sunglasses and a hat or other protection for the head are also strongly advised. Although the attitude towards dress is fairly liberal in the UAE, Al Ain is a little more conservative than the bigger cities, with the rural areas outside the city being even more so. It is especially recommended to dress more conservatively during Ramadan.
