A Senior Manager from HIA was onsite coordinating theentire operation, the priorities weremutually agreed andthe teamswereaccordinglyappointed. The targetwas toeliminateanyinterruptiontoQatarAirwaysflightschedule.Following a 24/7 joint AKTOR operation of keeping cleanthestoresareaandputtingtheautomaticretrievalsystembackintoservice,enabledtheairlinetocontinueoperationswithoutgroundingasingleaircraft.

MOhAMED FARUK, MAINTENANCE MANAGERIrememberthatmy3-yearsoldsonwassickthatday,IwenttoworkknowingthatIwouldleaveforacoupleofhourstotakehimtothedoctor.Icouldnotleavebefore21:30,whenIfinallytookhimtothepaediatrics.ItookhimbackhomeandIreturnedtotheHangar…Atthatdaywehadtogetthefacilitybacktonormalinnotime,fightingNature.Withnofood,nowatertodrink,soakedshoes,wetclothes.Justrunningandworking.Silently,orga-nized,focused.The entire AKTOR Team responded. And that makes meproud.Forme,forAKTORFMTeam,forAKTOR.WhattheCli-entsawandappraised?ThatAKTORhasamajorhumanpo-tentialbackup,thatcanbeimmediatelymobilized,presentandeffectivetowithstandanyhassle.

MARIA KOURIEOSRequest for assistance was sent out to all AKTOR sites as well as to the other FM contracts. They gradually started arriv-ing from about 9 am and by 12 o’clock we had mobilised ap-proximately 600 people. Mechanical/ElectricalteamsfromAKTORweredispatchedandgeneratorswerebroughtbyAK-TORandwithin1hourthepumpsstartedworkingandthewaterreceded.HamadInternationalAirportFacilityManagementinstructedusthentoturnonthepoweratHangarC&DsinceoneoftheaircraftbelongingtotheRoyalFamilyparkedtherehadtodepartasap.Ourelectricalteamstartedworkingonthatandmanagedtoturnthepoweronwithin30minutesandtheaircraftcouldthendepart.Success!Thenextchallengewastoturnthepowerbackonthebuild-ing.Ourteams,alongsideHamadInternationalAirportFM,startedworkingonit.Prioritiesweresetinregardstocer-tainareaswhereQatarAirwayshadtohaveoperationalastheyhadtwoaircraftbookedinforthateveningat9forre-

pairs.Duetothediligenceofallinvolvedthismilestonewasalso achieved, although this continued through the nightwithpersonnelgoinghomeforaveryshorttimetochangeoutofthewetclothesandreturnback.Asthelightwasslowlydisappearingtheoperationbecamemoredifficult.LightingTowersstartedarrivingfromAKTORsitesandwereplacedalong theglasspanelon theNorthwalltofacilitatethecleaningtocontinuethroughthenight.

COSTAS ZANTISIrememberwewereaskedtoprovidetiresforA380aircraft.Buttheywerestuckinshelves12meterhigh.Wemanagedtotakethemandcleanthem,centimetrepercentimetreasthepowerwasoff,respectingstrictsafetystandards.Irecallpeoplewithextremepatienceandcommitment,strugglingtodeliverthetiresinperfectconditionastheyareamajorpartofaircraftsafetystandards.At that time there were no managers, labor or staff. We were a Team. And thankfully, responsible enough to be on its own post, effective and self-possessed. Threemajor ingredients led us all to a positive outcome:professionaltraining,commitmentandclearjoballocation.Everyoneknewhispostandhis job.Everyonewas free toleavetheHangar,wedidnotaskorforceanyonetostay,buttheystayed.Allstayedandtriedthemosttosolvetheprob-lemandsatisfytheClient.Andeveryoneknewexactlywheretobeandwhattodo.Bythenextmorningthesitelookednormalagain.Thenexttwodays(FridayandSaturday),maximumeffortwasputforallareastostartbecomingoperational.BySundaywhenQa-tarAirwaysstaff returnedback towork, theywereable toresumetheirdutieswithoutmuchdisruption.Thededicationshownbyeveryonewascommendableandadmirable.Theteammostdefinitelyrosetotheoccasion!

Reports were coming infromeverywhere that the rainfallwas gettingheavier in seconds.ThiscontinuedthroughthedriveinandwhenIgotinsidethebuild-ingapproximately20minuteslatermykneesturnedtojelly.Peopleweredumbfoundedbuywhattheywerewitnessing…

COSTAS ZANTIS, FM MAINTENANCE MANAGERAsIarrivedatthehangarat07:00noticingthattherainwasnotasbadasitwasdowntownDoha….DuringtheFMShiftHandovermeeting,nomajorproblemswerereportedtheodddriphereandthere.Whileat-tendingthedailycoordinationmeetingat07:30phonecallsreceivedontheemergencynumberwascountlessasitseemedthattheheavi-estcloudinQatarparkeditselfontopHamadInternationalAirport!As themostseniorstaffmemberonsite, Ihadtomakesurethattheoccupants of the facilitywere safe. So followingprotocol, FMteamsledbyMohamedFaruk,rushedtotheHangarstoassessthesituation,withoutcompromisinganysafetyrules.AsperQatarCivilDefenseinstructions,thepowerwassoonturnedoffcompletely.Since therewas nopower, our resourceswere limited to the useofbroomsandsectionsofplywoodtopushthewater.Manpower resources arrived from AKTOR to assist, their input shed some light at the end of the tunnel. Similarly, electrical teams contributed to the short time it took to reinstate the power.

EDITORIAL12 years already in Doha. And the reason I landed in Qatar, was a car accident. 12 challenging, diffi-cult, rewarding, creative and constructive years, building AKTOR Middle East, building with AKTOR. With AKTOR, the Airport, Stadiums, resorts. With the People of AKTOR, those who were always here, together. We had good times and tough times, and the heavy rainfall last November was certainly one of the latter. Long hours to recover, to deliv-er completely operational a key AKTOR Project, a milestone of our Qatar Construction portfolio, a landmark of the State of Qatar.

We were all together, long days and nights, work-force of every grade, dedicated, committed, loyal. Not only to AKTOR, but to ourselves, to our work, to our Colleagues, to our Customer, to the future of us all, in Greece, in Doha, in the Middle East. Because together we stand. And if it was not you, every one and all of you Team, we would not be here today. It has never been easy, smooth, perfect. But we know what we have done so far in Qatar, and we know that our achievements shape our reputation, make us who we are, professionally and personal-ly, lead us to the future. It is not a matter of karma, nor of good will. It is a matter of understanding the Region, respecting the People, the Country, the Culture. It is about adjust and work, excel in Team, respect in person.

AKTOR is not the Management, it is the People, those who endeavor, who accomplish, who do not give up, who take responsibility. AKTOR is those who back and shoulder the effort regardless their grade, the time, the outcome. Those who are pres-ent and act. The recent heavy rainfall in Doha was an exceptional exercise of courage, hard work, risk assessment, crisis management, teamwork and un-preceded dedication of the People. FM, Construc-tion, Management, staff, labor force, all together to respond to the stake, solve the problem, to fight nature. And we made it. We struggled, we perse-vered, we bled. We overpassed our limits but we stood up. We delivered. AKTOR Middle East, AKTOR Qatar, entered 2016 mature, experienced, ready. Solid and firm. We move on, we keep up, we stand.

ANIl KUMAR DAyMA, SITE OPERATIONS COORDINATORWasthere21hoursinarow.Itwasauniquesituation,evenfor me having a 7 years’ experience with AKTOR. NothingsimilartothisheavyrainfallhaseveroccurredinQatar.Atthatmoment, throughout thedays andnights following, Icouldonlywonderwhy.Whydidthishappen,whytous,whyalmostexclusivelytothispartofDoha.Butattheend,Idonotcareabouttheanswer.BecauseIdidmybest,wealldidso. Andwedelivered the facility fully operational in a fewhoursonly.Wewantedtodoit,weoverpassedourpersonallimits,mostlyforourselves,andwedidit.WhatIconsidercrucial?ThateverybodyforAKTORFMwasthere,nooneleft,noonesuccumbedorabandonedundertheweightofresponsibilityandworkload.Mrs Maria Kou-rieos was with us at that moment, from the very first minute. Wet, caring, responsible, tenacious, fervent, positive, spirit-ed, an inspiring person that I respect like my mother. In lessthan1hour,theentireCity,aswellastheGulfregion,washitbythisterriblerainfall.Majorroadaxesflooded,AlCorniche,AlWaabamongothers,wereclosedforhours.5-starshotels,recentlyrenovated,andshoppingmalls,sufferedconsider-abledamages.But we gave this battle and finally, restored operations!I stayed there for almost 4 consecutivedays. BecausemyManagertoldmetobethere,Iwasthere.Yes, I did it because AKTOR is my family here. I acknowledge difficulties, but I also appreciate that AKTOR shoulders us, has not left us alone that day. Top Management was next to us. Mr Nikos Rigas was there. Timelineteam, always busy and rushing to respond to Contractu-altermsandconditions.TheHangarisapreciousgemforNDIA,forQatar,forus.Thisincidentwasachallenge,astake,apeak.Toenhanceperformance,restoreoperations,satisfytheClient,honourtheCompany.Hard feelings?Well,as ineveryOrganization, some listen,some do not. Some respect, some care, some praise, butsomedonotthinkthatweneedittotryharder,torewardrespect,careandappraisal10timesmore.Somestandbyyou,presentandstrong,whileotherspreferthecomfortoftheoffice.So,nohardfeelingsatall.

The rainfallwasamilestone inmy career: thewaywedealtwithit.IfIfeltfearatanyinstance?Itwasnotfear,itwasamajorconcern:fromthefirstminuteIhadtomakepeoplesafeandminimizedamages.Therewasahugepressure,thewaterdidnotseemtostopfalling,therainwasalmostacataclysm.But we all knew our duties: safe people, safe facility. And we took all necessary measures, and did what we were trained to do, in calm and in crisis situations: act professionally.WithMr Costas Zantis andMr Faruk, a team thatwentonthe roof having taken all safety measures, we saw, weevaluated hard facts and implemented contingency plan.

ThecertificationprocessforQatarRailwasthesuccessfuloutcome of a rigid process undertaken by the GuinnessWorldRecordsAuthority ledbyProfessorArnoldDix,witha verification committee of 20 inspectors. Each TBM wasfilmedinaction.InspectorswerealsogivenGeographicIn-formationSystem(GIS)data,confirmingworksandstatusofallTBMs.

AnimportantpartofthissuccessbelongstotheentireALYSJJV Team. Dynamic, efficient, strong,meticulous, this Teamoperates6ofthetotalnumberofTBMsinDoha,whiletherestofthemwereoperatedbytheRedLineNorth,RedLineSouthandGreenLine teams.By the timeofGuinnessRe-cordverification,25%ofthefullGoldLinetunnellengthwascomplete,59.48mcompletemining&ringbuilding in24hfromasingleTBMwasachieved,andthemonthlyoutputinAugust2015was1843ringsproduction.

Accompanied by Mr Paris Kallitsantsis, Middle East Opera-tionsManager,heenjoyedadetailedsitetourtoalandmarkProjectintheCountry,byMrMichaelMarxer,StationManager.

Curiousand impressedat thesametime, theAmbassadorpraisedtheteamworkofALYSJJV,bringingtogetherpeoplefromamultitudeofnationalitiesandcultures,sharingthevisionanddedicationtodelivertheHistoricLineontime.

He also expressed his satisfaction that so many Greeks,skilledandexperienced,participateinthisProject,fromthenorthernborderinEvrostoCreteandfromtheIoniantotheAegeanislands,fromIkaria,Chiosandsomanyothers.

Nevertheless, theMinisterofFinanceAliShareefAlEmadisaidthattheshortfallwillbecoveredthrough“debtinstru-ments”inthelocalandinternationalmarkets.

Headdedthatthebudgetwillsustainspendinginkeysec-torslikeinfrastructureandtransport,withspecialfocusonrailways, health andeducation, aswell asotherprojectstiedtoQatar’shostingof the2022WorldCup.Theoutlaymadeforthesesectors,represent45.4%ofthetotalexpen-diture in the 2016budget,while the allocation formajorprojectsinQatarwouldgoupbyQAR3.3bntoQAR90.8bninthefiscal2016.

MinisterAlEmadiemphasizedthattheStateBudgetfor2016highlights thegovernment’s “keennesson sustainablede-velopment”andconcludedthatthe2016StateBudgetwouldnotsourcefundsfromthecountry’sreservesatQatarCen-tralBankortheinvestmentsofQIA.“Qatarhasaccumulatedstrong financial reserves at QCB andmade significant in-vestmentsthroughQIAduringtheperiodofhighoilandgasrevenues.“Qatarwillmaintainandreinvestthesereservesandinvestmentstofurtherenhancethecountry’sfinancialposition”.

TassosNaoum’sentire careerwaswithAKTOR,makinghimpartofAK-TORedifice,soul,pathandvalues.

With a strong educational back-ground,TassosgraduatedfromtheNational Technical University ofAthensasaCivilEngineerandob-

tainedaMasterDegreeinConstructionManagementfromHeriot Watt University in Edinburgh. His professional lifestartedwithAKTORinGreecein1993andcontinuedintheMiddleEastwhenhepioneeredthemarketin2004.

DuringhiscareerinGreeceheservedinanumberofposi-tionsrangingfromSiteEngineertoProjectsDirector,work-ing on challenging projects all over the country. His firstMiddle Eastern appointment was in Doha in 2004, wheretogetherwithNikosRigas,ledasmallteam,whichmanagedtosucceedinsecuringtwomajorprojectsinHamadInter-nationalAirport.ItisthissuccessfuleffortthatallowedthegrowthofthecompanyintheMiddleEastandthesubse-quentawardoftheGoldLineProject.

NextstopwasOman,whereTassosledAKTOR’ssuccessfulventure in thecountry forfiveyears. Then,TassosmovedtotheUAEforthreeyearsbeforereturningin2014toQatartoundertakeaverycriticalpositioninthenewlyacquiredGoldLineProjectwhichwashiscurrentappointmentuptothetragicevent.

Hebecamealeadermorethanadirector,oneoftheserareold-school personalitieswho care and shoulder,with theinspirationtotryharder,tocompetewithourselves,toex-cel,todeliver,tolearnfromfailure,toenjoywork,creativity,success.Talented,hard-working,committed,teammate,en-couraging,Tassoswasanexampletoallofus,mostlyforhisEthosandValues.Tassoswasprincipled,respectful,trust-worthy,andomnipresent.

We,allofusinAKTORandALYSJJV,havelostarealfriend,andcolleague.Thoseofuswhohavebeenfortunateenoughtoknowandworkwithhimovertheyears,lostafriend,amentorandacompanion.

Andweall,musthonorhispathandachievementbycon-tinuingandcompletingthechallengesinhand.

Inmomentslikethese,weshouldallspendtimeforintro-spection.Ourchoicesbutalsoluckandfatehavebroughtustowherewearetoday.Nomatterhowmuchweachieve,wearealwaysvulnerableandassuchmustseizetheday,

takecareofourhealthandspendtimewithourfamilies.

OnbehalfofAKTORandALYSJJVIwishtoexpressoursin-cerecondolencestohisfamily,hisbelovedwifeMariaanddaughters IphigeniaandAspasia.Their loss ispainfulbe-yondwords,nevertheless,westandbythem,tohonorthememoryofTassosandassistthemtoovercometheirloss.
