Kinahan’s past doesn’t affect me, we get on well with MTK

EXCLUSIVE by JOHN HAND

DRUGS kingpin DanielKinahan was involved inorganising MTK fighterMichael Conlan’s defenceof his WBO title in Belfastlast year, a top Americanpromoter has revealed.

Bob Arum made the revela-tion as he insisted he can “dis-regard” Kinahan’s involvementin organised crime.

In an exclusive interview with theIrish Sun, Arum, a former federalprosecutor in the US, said Kinahanmade sure everyone in MTK was“checked”and “cooperating” for theBelfast bout in which Conlandefeated Diego Ruiz to retain hisWBO Intercontinental belt.

Arum’s Top Rank Boxing repre-sents the American side of boxers’interests, including those of Conlan.

MTK, which was originallyfounded by Kinahan in 2012 asMGM, has insisted that the crime-lord no longer has any involvementin the company.

But Arum, who has no involve-ment in crime, told how Kinahan“blessed” the event.

He told the Irish Sun: “Last sum-mer when we were in Belfast wedid a Mick Conlan fight, which wetelevised back in the United Statesbecause Conlan has got a big fol-lowing in the United States.

“We worked in conjunction withMTK and it worked out. ObviouslyDaniel blessed it but he . . . hewasn’t hands-on (with) us doing theevent. I guess he made sure thatMTK people were checked, cooper-ating with us.

“We were working well together. Iwouldn’t say that he just walkedaway from it. I think he wasinvolved from the standpoint thathe wanted to make sure that every-body was cooperating on the event, which we were.

“And we’ve got a very good rela-tionship with MTK. Mick’s brotherJamie is a terrific kid.”

Conlon and his brother Jamiehave no involvement in crime.

Boxing powerhouse Arum spokelast weekend about how Kinahanwas working to get one of the big-gest fights in history staged in theMiddle East between heavyweightsTyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

He said Kinahan acts as an advi-sor to MTK and now Top Rank, aswell as a number of fighters.

However, Arum refused to bedrawn on Kinahan’s backgroundafter it was put to him directly —and insists he does not care.

Questioned about it by the IrishSun, Arum said: “I’m not naive. Iwas a federal prosecutor myself. I’msaying I can disregard all of thatstuff. It doesn’t affect me. It hasn’taffected me.

“When it does, I’ll have to dealwith it. But right now, I have abso-lutely no involvement with the Irishauthorities. Nobody has come to me,nobody has questioned me.

“So my philosophy is, ‘Stick toyour business son’ — meaning me.Stick to your business and don’t bedistracted by the backgroundnoises.” He added: “Anything thatwent before — allegedly went before

— that’s none of my business.” AndArum also said he would havewanted to stage an event in Dublinthis year if Coronavirus had notthrown everything into the air.

He was unaware the 2016 RegencyHotel attack has stopped the cityhosting any major MTK-relatedevents due to security concerns.

The revelations come as Kinahanredoubles his efforts to recast him-self as a sporting mogul. At theend of March, he posed with MTK’snew ambassador Mohamed BinMansoor Al Arayedh, who later

published the snap online. Therewas also a major backlash afterMTK figures like Billy Joe Saun-ders and the UFC’s Darren Tillhailed the hood. Al Arayedh, Saun-ders and Till have no involvementwhatsoever in crime.

Some boxing stars then ralliedaround Kinahan at the beginning ofApril after a new rap track claimedState agencies set him up to bekilled in the Regency Hotel horror.

In 2018, CAB told how Danielplays an “integral part” in organis-ing the supply of drugs into Ire-

land. He is also under investigationin Spain for money laundering, with the FBI and DEA in the USprobing his cartel’s multimillioneuro smuggling operations.

Arum said he does not know howlong Kinahan has been involved inthe top tier of the sport. They havemet on two occasions — in Dubaiover a year ago and they laterspent time in each other’s companyat an event in Kazakhstan.

But the pair are in regular con-tact over the phone and Kinahaneven enticed the boxing promotor

to sign Carl Frampton up. Arumsaid: “A lot of fighters rely on himfor advice and we’ve taken advan-tage of that in the sense that we’vesigned a lot of those fighters thathe advises, like Frampton.”

Arum also told how he last hadan event in Ireland when Muham-mad Ali fought Al ‘Blue’ Lewis inDublin’s Croke Park in 1972.

He described the capital as “agreat place to do events” andinsisted he would have held onehere this year if Covid-19 had nottarnished plans across sport. But

Anything that went before is

none of my business

Conlan is snapped yesterday in a training session at his Belfast home while adhering to Covid guidelines

when he was told about theRegency Hotel attack and the likelydifficulties of MTK hosting eventshere, Arum said: “I didn’t knowthat. I must say, as far as we’reconcerned, nobody from over therehas interfered with us.”

Hailing Kinahan, Arum added:“He has been more than honourablewith us, a man of his word, so ourrelationships are good.”

MTK announced they had cut tieswith Kinahan in 2017, a year afterthe Regency Hotel attack.

Authorities believe that date was

the major part of Kinahan’s masterplan, in which he was to step outfrom the shadows of the crimeunderworld to show himself as alegitimate businessman.

Instead, he was targeted in ashooting that he managed to fleebut which saw his close pal DavidByrne, brother of the Kinahan car-tel lieutenant Liam, blasted todeath and left in a pool of blood.

The Regency incident is believedto have been in retaliation for themurder of Gary Hutch in the Costadel Sol in 2015. Kinahan was later

named in a Spanish court as hav-ing ordered the hit before JamesQuinn was caged for 22 years.

The feud which followed left 18dead, including four innocent vic-tims. Of those, the Kinahans havebeen responsible for 15 and gardaibelieve the cartel is still active andposes a serious threat.

Daniel fled Spain for Dubai in2017, where he remains in exile likemany of the mob’s main players.

MTK was contacted this week bythe Irish Sun about Kinahan’s workwith them but did not respond.

A SEVEN-year-old boywho found a fully loadedgun while playing outsidewith his sister said afterbringing it home: “Dadwe found a real gun, canyou come up and see?”

Relieved parents Modestasand Ceslava Gilys yesterdaytold of their horror after twoof their kids discovered theGlock near their pad inCastlecurragh Park, outsideMulhuddart in west Dublin.

They told the Irish Sun: “Itwas scary — what if one of thekids picked it up and shot?”

It’s thought the handgun waslobbed from a black Lexus carwhile a hit team were chased bymembers of the Gardai’s ArmedSupport Unit at around 5.15pm.

Another theory is that the yobsmay have dumped the weaponthere hours earlier.

The Lithuanian couple’s kids —David, seven, and five-year-oldSamantha — came across it whenthey went up to a green areanear their gaff to play at 5.20pm.

Young David had left his bikedown when his sister spotted thegun mere centimetres away.

Samantha picked it up andnoted how heavy it was — beforeher brave brother ran home withit after realising it was not a toy.

Speaking exclusively to theIrish Sun from their homeyesterday, Modestas said: “All thekids were playing in the area.Behind my son’s bicycle, theysaw the gun.

“My son David came home andsaid, ‘Dad we found a real gun,can you come up and see.’ Ithought they were joking that thegun was real. We were thinking,‘How can it be a real gun?’”

Ceslava added: “We thoughtmaybe they were just playingand joking. But I told him(Modestas), ‘Just go with him, please take a look.’

“My youngest daughter foundit. She picked it up and said, ‘It’stoo heavy, I’m scared’ and sheput it down.”

Dad Modestas went up andrealised straight away that it wasa real weapon.

He kept the kids away fromthe firearm as a concernedneighbour, who was returninghome from work, alerted gardaiwho got there by 5.30pm.

But Ceslava imagined whatthings could have been like ifthe kids had picked up the gunand thought it was a toy.

She added: “It was scary, because not every day you see agun. I was thinking what if oneof the kids picked it up and shot— it’s just so dangerous.”

Stay-at-home mum Ceslavasaid she reassured the worriedyoungsters that they did theright thing.

She said: “I’m proud of them. They were so scared about it. Wewere all in shock, you know?

“I’m happy with the way mykids dealt with it. It is terriblebut we’re happy they camestraight away to tell us instead ofplaying.

“All the kids are so young.Afterwards I told the kids it wasOK. I told them, if any one daythey are going to school orwherever, and they see some-thing like that, just to comehome and tell somebody.

“Maybe a knife or something, just tell someone. And don’ttouch it and don’t take it.

“My daughter, she’s too smallto understand that. She was notin shock.

“David was in shock. He wascrying, ‘Mummy what did I do?’I said, ‘You didn’t do anything, you’re a good boy for just cominghome and telling us.’”

Gardai are still hunting for thehit team who dumped theweapon and the 08-D blackLexus i220 the thugs were in.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar hassaid he is “really concerned” bythe kids’ find. He added: “It is ashocking development, one that I

am really concerned about. Ithink we are blessed that none ofthe children were injured orkilled. That could have happened.

“And I am really pleased thatthey did the right thing bybringing it to the attention of anadult quite quickly. And youknow whoever discarded aloaded firearm in this way hasdone something reprehensible.”

Investigators believe the gundiscovery is linked to theongoing Corduff feud between aBlanchardstown drugs mob andformer members of the Westies

gang, who have been backed bybling-loving Kinahan-linked drugdealer Mr Flashy.

The bloody war has seen amajor escalation in the past fewweeks but cops in the area havenabbed a number of firearms ina major bid to curb the violence.

Just last Saturday, innocentLithuanian man Saulius Margis,41, was blasted in a case ofmistaken identity while sitting ina VW Passat in the same area.

Sources said the actual targetof the attack had fled the areathe night before following

Thug Michael Collins, 45, ofDrogheda, Co Louth, was yes-terday caged for 14 years fordangerous driving causing thedeath of Jillian in May 2016 onthe N2 in Co Meath.

Jillian, 20, was killed when shewas thrown from the back seat ofthe defendant’s car which was splitin two when it collided with anothervehicle. Callous Collins — whopleaded not guilty, maintains hisinnocence and represented himself

after sacking his legal team — wasalso convicted of two charges ofendangerment, 12 charges of danger-ous driving and driving under theinfluence of an intoxicant.

The victim’s family — mumLorraine, dad Derek, their daughterElaine and son Derick — have alsotold of their heartache after losingtheir treasured Jillian.

Innocent Jillian — who was study-ing childcare and dreamed of oneday opening her own creche — diedin the horror crash after Collinswent on a driving rampage whilebeing chased by gardai.

The young woman was in theback seat of Collins’ Mitsubishi Coltwhich smashed into a Passat nearBallymagarvey on the N2.

It followed a 35-minute pursuit bygardai who took chase after thecrazed driver failed to stop for copsafter driving the wrong way on aroundabout in Drogheda.

Maniac Collins sped through thetown and east Meath before heheaded north on the N2 towardsSlane and then turned back in the

Ashbourne direction before the fatalcrash. CCTV was shown in court ofthe vehicle on the wrong side ofthe road while speedingthrough Drogheda.

The scumbag wasinvolved in a number ofnear misses. Collins —who had smoked “a fewjoints” earlier that day —claimed in court he hadbeen in fear for his lifeat the time as someonehad put a hit on himand he did not believeit was gardai followinghim. The court heardthat later technical and other inves-tigations found no evidence to sup-port this claim. The pursuit during

the trial was likened to OJ Simp-son’s infamous LA chase in 1994.

The trial heard how Jillian andanother passenger werein the car because theybelieved they weregoing to a festival inWestmeath.

When Jillian had lefthome that evening, shehad told her family thatshe would be back inan hour. However shenever came home.

The court saw snap-chats from the otherfemale passenger, cap-

tioned “high speed Garda chase”.But in her final moments, a terri-fied Jillian made two 999 calls —

which the court heard — before thesecond one ended in a scream.

Elaine, who had to identify heryounger sister’s voice on the tape togardai — explained: “That childbegged that man to stop that car.She begged him . . . what he saidduring the trial that he tried tostop and let them out was rubbish. She was fighting so hard to stayalive.”

Collins, who sacked his own legalteam and represented himself, com-plained to the Garda SiochanaOmbudsmen Commission.

He claimed he had been set upby gardai who wanted to kill him.

But the officer from GSOCgave evidence saying gardai hadno involvement in the fatal smash

and recommended Collins be pros-ecuted for providing misleadinginformation.

Elaine said: “He wanted his fiveminutes of fame and he’s getting it.He reminds me of Ted Bundy, rep-resenting himself.”

Collins has 51 previous convic-tions including assault, dangerousdriving and burglary.

Judge Martina Baxter sentencedCollins to five years for endanger-ment and a consecutive term of tenyears for dangerous driving causingdeath with the final 12 months sus-pended.

At the end Collins asked abouthow many years he got, before thejudge asked him to be taken awaybecause she “had enough” of him.
