About Aki
Currently working as a Creative Director for exhibition and environmental design at Ralph Appelbaum Associates . Aki has opened over ten award-winning museums and cultural institutions worldwide . Her primary project since 2010 has been the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture on the Mall in D .C . Aki is a founding member of Ripple Effect, a water literacy program in New Orleans, and has taught graduate design courses at Pratt Institute and Parsons . Aki lives in Brooklyn with her husband and spends her free time traveling, cooking and working on her hand lettering .

Hawaiian Hall at Bishop MuseumHonolulu, Hawaii
Founded in 1889, the Bishop Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of Polynesian cultural and scientific artifacts . We sought to interpret Hawaiian history and culture from a native perspective for the first time in history; to restore and make accessible a historic structure; and to build audience and strengthen community relationships . Hawaiian Hall, 12,000 sf in size, is considered a masterwork of late Victorian museum design . Opened 2008 .

Nelson Mandela Day New York, New York
Installed in Grand Central Station’s Vanderbilt Hall, the Mandela Day exhibition called upon visitors to proactively engage in civic and social causes and celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, whose words and actions changed the world . Large-scale light boxes illuminated the history of modern South Africa as told through Mandela’s experiences as an anti-apartheid activist, political prisoner, and the country’s first black President . The exhibits also highlight Mandela’s current activities as a global humanitarian, inviting visitors to literally “sign up” to donate their time toward a positive social cause . Opened 2009 .

Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus, Ohio
The hospital’s goal was to extend the high quality family-centered care that it provides to families beyond its clinical operations and into its public spaces . The hospital’s enhanced environment was designed to support both family and staff needs, helping to promote positive and familiar experiences . The design concept was to “bring the outdoors indoors” by pulling natural elements like light, shadow, and color into the public and private spaces to create a warm and friendly environment . Opened June 2012 .

Liberty World War I Memorial Museum Kansas City, Missouri
National World War I Museum in Kansas City, Missouri is the first museum in the United States to position the Great War as the defining event of the twentieth century . The 30,000 sf space features a re-created field of 9,000 poppies and a panoramic media/diorama event on America’s entry into the war . The museum’s massive artifact collection is used to illustrate an in-depth analysis of the war’s effect on world history and its continuing impact . Opened October 2006 .

National Museum of African American History and Culture Washington, D .C .
The National Museum of African American History and Culture will be a place where all Americans can learn about the richness and diversity of the African American experience, what it means to their lives and how it helped us shape this nation . A place that transcends the boundaries of race and culture that divide us, and becomes a lens into a story that unites us all . Scheduled to open in 2016, the museum is under construction on the National Mall in Washington, D .C ., adjacent to the Washington Monument .

Pacific Hall at Bishop Museum Honolulu, Hawaii
The Bishop Museum has embarked on a comprehensive architectural renovation of its historic 120-year-old Hawaiian and Pacific Halls . Following the restoration and reinstallation of the Hawaiian Hall which reopened in 2009, the Museum has reinterpreted its Polynesian and Pacific collections with all new exhibitions . The Museum holds keystone collections and has made major contributions to the body of knowledge on Pacific origins and migration . In a restored Victorian-era gallery, the Museum showcases Polynesia’s past and present cultures . Opened 2012 .

NBC Education Nation New York, New York
Environmental graphics for an exhibition at Rockefeller Center to explore the challenges and opportunities in education today . NBC Education Nation visited local communities across the country on the Education Nation Tour, developed a thriving online community, launched the award-winning Learning Curve blog, and NBC News committed to in-depth education reporting across the network . Opened 2010 .

Samsung World Headquarters Seoul, Korea
Samsung d’light is the public product showcase for Samsung Electronics in its relocated world headquarters in the dynamic neighborhood of Seocho-gong, Seoul . The 29,000 sf, three-level environment was conceived as an experience where visitors are continuously creating graphic and media content through their interaction with Samsung products . Opened 2008 .

Ripple Effect promotes “water literacy” through design-based, in-school instruction and gives students the knowledge and skills they need to strengthen their communities in an era of climate change and sea level rise . Ripple Effect works with teachers and students to establish water literacy programs at their schools . We bring together designers, educators, and water experts to create curriculum aligned, design-based classroom experiences that connect to real places . In New Orleans, we are working towards building an empowered and water-literate citizenry .
