AKG … a name that has amassed anenviable world-wide reputation forperformance, dependability and serv-ice. A microphone for every need …television studios, motion-picture pro-duction centers, theaters, stadiums, concert halls, opera houses, commu-nication links, schools, home taperecorders … and the personal choiceof hundreds of performers.

Among professionals – the name AKGis synonymous with the highest stan-dards in quality, performance, anddependability.

Based on intensive scientific research,an extensive knowledge of acousticsand measurement techniques, designcompetence, precision tooling andmeticulous manufacturing standards,AKG has achieved many firsts inmicrophone development.

In the past three decades, AKGresearch has resulted in numeroussignificant acoustical developments, reflected in over 600 worldwidepatents held by AKG.

Today, AKG operates one of the lar-gest research facilities devoted exclu-sively to the development of new con-denser and dynamic microphones, headphones, phonocartridges andother related acoustic products. It isstaffed by over 40 scientists and engi-neers, who have at their disposal morethan 20 walk-in anechoic chamberscomplete with the the latest acousti-cal, mechanical and electronic meas-uring equipment.

Research and development is on-going, and new projects – e.g., ultra-sonic transducers, infrared and otherwireless techniques, digital and ana-log delay lines, materials analysis, arti-ficial reverberation, phonocartridges, electret transducers, and more – areunder investigation. Manufacturingmethods are constantly updated.

Product ruggedness and serviceabilityare continually improved without com-promising quality. AKG is proud to bein the forefront of newer and bettersound reproduction.

“PUSHING THE ENVELOPE”The legacy of AKG

For more than five decades, AKGAcoustics has been a leading manu-facturer of microphones, headphonesand wireless systems for studio, stageand broadcast that conform to thehighest standards of quality and relia-bility. The accumulated experience ofworking with professionals andtremendous engineering know-how arethe foundation of the unique sound andpopularity of the legendary AKG brand.

AKG was one of the first companies torecognize the emergence of affordableproject studio equipment, the prolife-ration of digital gear in broadcasting, the trend towards quality-consciouslive sound audiences and the demandfor superior mics that these trendswould drive. AKG’s product portfolio isused for all these applications all overthe world and has become the stan-dard for top engineers and musicians.

There is no greater evidence of AKG’stechnical mastery and spirit of innova-tion than its 1,500 patents in the fieldof electro-acoustics, more than all itscompetitors combined. AKG is continuously “pushing theenvelope” of what's possible to giveyou the best performance for yourapplication. There is no greater evi-dence of AKG’s clear superiority thanthe new C 414 B-XL.

From a two-man operation, AKG has evolved into an internationally leading manufacturer of audio equipment(over 1,400 patents).

THE HISTORY OF THE C 414How a legendary product evolved

1962The introduction of the C 12 A, the fore-runner of the now-classic C 414 design.The C 12 A had a Nuvistor tube in itspreamp section and its miniaturizedhousing became a trademark of AKG’slarge-diaphragm microphones. Thismodel was marketed until 1976.

1971The launch of the first C 414 model, theC 414 comb. This model had a specialmodule with a permanently-attachedcable, but was a solid-state design thatallowed upgrades as technology im-

proved and also permitted phantompowering instead of requiring an exter-nal supply.

1976In response to the emergence of 3-pinXLR-type connectors as the world stan-dard, AKG introduces the C 414 EB withthis connector integrated into the micro-phone. The integral connector elimi-nates the need for the cable module sothe microphone can be easily used withdifferent cables to meet applicationrequirements.

1980The launch of the C 414 EB-P48, thefirst model with a black housing.

This model featured certain technicalimprovements that lowered self-noiseand improved sensitivity and headroommade possible by standardizing on 48 Vphantom power, which was the becom-ing standard, especially in the U.S.

1986Introduction of the C 414 B-ULS, amodel that combined several mile-stones in the development of the C 414:

1. ULS technology in its electronic cir-cuitry that achieved maximum signallinearity.

2. The C 414 B-TL, the first transform-erless version of the C 414. Thesepioneering technologies made theC 414 B-ULS the most popular,longest-lived C 414 model.

1993The C 414 B-TL II, the first sonic alter-native to the C 414 B-ULS, was intro-duced. This microphone was designedto meet customer demands for a micro-phone with more “presence” to itssound. Its capsule was developed withthe sonic signature of the original cap-sules used from the 1950s to the 1970s.

The enhanced presence of the C 414 B-TL II means that solo voices and instru-ments can be placed in a dense mix whilestill retaining their original character. The C 414 B-TL II is also useful in distant-micing vocal or instrument applicationswhere some of the sonic timbre is lost ashigh frequencies propagate in air. AKG became the world’s first manu-

facturer of freely-vibrating, edge-ter-minated one-inch diaphragms morethan 50 years ago.

Five polar patternsThe twin-diaphragm system gives you a choice of five different polar patterns (omni-directional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid, and figure eight). The dia-phragm is made from a special gold-sputtered plastic foil and the gold layer is depo-sited on the diaphragm only on the outer sides to prevent short circuiting to theback plate if strong blasts of air are applied.

Absolute reliabilityThe solid metal housing and transform-erless output stage combine to makethe C 414 B-XL microphones immune toelectrical interference from digital equip-ment, video monitors or from rf fromwireless microphone or other communi-cations systems.

Three switchable pre-attenuation levelsPre-attenuation levels are controlled by changes in the polarization voltage of thecapsule and permit increases of 6, 12 or 18 dB in the maximum sound pressurelevel for close-up recording or for use on high output sources.

Elastic capsule suspensionStructurally-transmitted vibrations thatinterfere and color the sound are almostcompletely eliminated thanks to a newelastic capsule suspension system.

2004AKG introduces the new C 414 modelsC 414 B-XLS and C 414 B-XL II.

In developing the new models, we havecarefully maintained the sonic characterand traditional shape of the C 414 series, while integrating new features like a vast-ly improved capsule shock mount, newswitching functions and more moderndesign – into the classic shape of the pre-vious models.

Instantly recognizable as a C 414, the newmodels will be familiar to anyone who hasused and heard the famous predeces-sors.

The new XLS and XL II models were de-veloped to give professional users im-proved functionality they need: controlswitches with status LED for selecting thepolar pattern, pre-attenuation pad andbass cut/roll-off. An overload indicatorfunction, status indicators and positioningaid have been integrated into the micro-phone too. An optional remote controldevice to switch all these functions at themixer will be available by the end of 2004.

Three switchable bass filtersThe switchable bass-cut filters reduce sonic coloration and the risk of low-frequency distortion.

The slope of the 40 and 80 Hz filters is more than 12 dB-per-octave and theseare especially useful in combating wind noise or vibrations from stage floors. The 160 Hz filter has a gentler 6 dB-per-octave slope useful in minimizing prox-imity effect.

Predictable performance even in humid conditionsTo minimize the negative effects of humidity, all switching circuits are located ina sealed low-impedance section to prevent problems.

To test the stability of our microphones' performance, they are tested in simu-lated climatic conditions between -25° C (-13° F) and +65° C (+149° F) as wellas relative humidity as high as 99% (immediately below point of condensation)above +20° C (+68° F). The new C 414 B models can handle temperature ex-tremes anywhere and still deliver perfect performance.

Optional remote controlAll switchable functions of the microphone can also be controlled by the option-al R 414 remote control unit (available by the end of 2004). The remote controltransmits its commands to the microphone over conventional two-conductorshielded microphone cables to maintain complete interface compatibility withyour other equipment.

Matched stereo pairsThe new C 414 B models are also available in factory-matched pairs.

The matched pairs consist of two microphones that come closest to each otherin sensitivity and frequency response when used in the cardioid mode. The kitincludes all the standard accessories of the deluxe package (excluding the PF 80)along with a stereo bar and proof of performance charts.
