The main concept for my library project was that my building would be divided into three separated zones (witheachzonedefinedbythetrafficpatternsaroundmysiteandmonument)withtherightsidebeingthe public side that would house the key program spaces, the left side would house the service and faculty program and the bottom left would house the specialty program (overhung gathering space/ auditorium).

02 Back Bay Fens: Full Board
For this project, we were tasked with examining a site in Boston - the Back Bay Fens - and trying to formulate an idea about the park and the surrounding neighborhoods. Throughout the project, we were given various tasks that would help us clarify our thoughts of the site (from data collection, to perspectives)

The main concept for this project is based off the idea that the Back Bay Fens area of Boston is actually a series of 5 different zones separated by the major roads that surrounds the park. The top diagram shows the entire site intact while the bottom diagram is a representation of the different zones - or tectonic plates - breaking apart. It also shows how the larger zones are similar along the major streets (thus separate slower).

For data collection in the Back Bay Fens, I examined a variety of factors including: building types, demographics,trafficpatterns/intensity,andstreetnoise.Thedatahelpedsolidifymyargumentsand help me decide where each of my “tectonic plates” are divided.

02 Back Bay Fens: Perspective
Our Third Task for this project was to create a drawing that show what you experience while you are in the Back Bay Fens. This drawing is an expanded view of the Back Bay Fens from with multiple perspectives being spliced together to create a panoramic like view of the site. I then added a “hero” who would habitat various areas of the site and describe what its like in each of the areas at various times during the day.

02Back Bay Fens: Render
Our Final Task for the this project was to create a perspective that attempted to show the conclusion that we had created based on our analysis. This perspective taken at the intersection of 4 & 5 is a synthesis of of my idea of separate zones that are separated along the major streets. This drawing also a good example of how the nature of each site is blurred at the separation points (with aspects of the Commercial zone 4 mixing a little bit with the Residential zone 5)

MydesignforEastBostonnotonlydealswiththespecificsiteweweregiven, butalsothesurrounding areaasawhole.Todealwithpotentialfloodproblems,Iplannedoncreatingaseriesofwatershedsthat would be able to absorb water surges throughout the coast of East Boston. I then planned building these sites in phases that would be connected by a new boardwalk system that would revitalize the coast (which is currently under utilized). Finally I planned on making my site an archetype for the future projects in the area.
View of the sites different layers as an exploded axon explaining how the different layers are organized and how they’re all interconnected
Design at the node scale pt. 2
Layer 1: Landscape and Streets & Square
- Landscape: watershed and river walk area that is sunken down from the rest of the site (3-4 ft). The river walk area begins from the pond at the end of the node all the way down to the boardwalk along the Chelsea Creek. Series of ramps/ land stairs/ sloping landscape bring youdown to river walk area.
- Streets: main street is a continuation of the back street near hotel. Also acts as divider on the sitetransforming the site into four quadrants. Other street is parallel to exististing streets in area.
-Square: Framed by the performance arts building and the office building. Square acts as main pedestrian entrance for site with green sitting spaces inbetween the pathways.
Layer 2: Residential block
- Residential block acts as a transition from the edge of the site to the water.Buildings’ shapes are derived from the the two main roads intersecting the siteand the water ways that help create the courtyards. Overhanging buildingshelp connect residential building along street edge and those along the water way.
45 3-story buildings at 1200 sq ft per floor.total sq ft = 16200
Layer 3: Commercial Center
- Commercial Center for site that connects the main portion of the site, the hotel, and the boardwalk along the Chelsea Creek. The exterior of thesite has a tradional shopping center facade, while the interior of the complexis very open and transparent with that invites people into/ throughout the complex.
Commercial block Total sq ft = 217557Circulation sq ft = 57040
Layer 4: Node Buildings
- Node Buildings act as the main entrance to the site and help shape the square. They act as a threshold into the site. Also help lead pedestrian traffic into the site(along with the water way).
office buildingtotal sq ft = 316450Theatretotal sq ft = 247512
Total Square Footage of site is Approx. = 1425672 sq ft
03 East Boston: Concept
This page is a simple concept diagram (exploded 3-d model) that explains the various layers of my design from the sculpted landscape and watershed, to the Residential blocks on the South-side of the Site, to the Commercial Buildings to the North of the site, to the Node and the square to the East.

In the Upper Render, it is showing a view of my design from one of the green spaces in between the residential spaces. You can see the sloping landscape that leads to the riverwalk as well as the waterway coming into the space and uniting the green space with the rest of the site. The Lower Render is showing a view from the mall area of my project. Compared to the solid exterior seen in the Upper Render, the interior of that area is completely open and transparent. The waterway also comes into the area to unite it with the rest of the site.
