PAGE 3DIXIE DANDY DISPATCH 2007

Here's hoping the approaching 2007 fishing season will present the same angling opportunities as its predecessors. If the upcoming season is anything like the past two; I will be very pleased indeed. On average the salmon were a little larger than the previous year and total salmon and trout harvest was a tad over 78,000 fish. One thing I hope will be different in 2007 will be calmer seas. Last year we experienced plenty of wind and rough water. It didn't keep us off the water that much, however we certainly bounced around quite a bit. This year will be better, I just know it will!!!! Once again, I look forward to fishing with you.

I have decided to participate in only one show this year. The reason is simple. I will be in Florida and want to stay warm as long as I can and catch as many sunny day fish as I can. It seems like a good plan to me. I will be at the Northeast Great Outdoor Show at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY on March 16-18 2007. Hopefully, it will be a little warmer in New York by then. Hope to see you at the show.

The 2005 fantastic year class of alewives will be 2 years old in 2007 and they are out there in huge numbers. The trout and salmon will have a feeding frenzy all year long. The baitfish population offers millions of calorie rich body energy producing forage that will translate to huge fish. Its happened before and it will happen again.

We expect to see some 40lb monsters caught in 07. If you want to hook up with a big, big guy, then 2007 should provide a great opportunity. The only thing I hope is that you will catch the big one while fishing with me. Why not?

During the off season I update my web site frequently, through what I call Capt. Gerry's Fish Blog. Pertinent information, fishery updates and my 2 cents are there for your perusal. This season I plan to include weekly photo updates of our catch. Check us out at:

Perhaps some of you remember the Hooker Chemical/Love Canal pollution disaster that occurred over 25 years ago near Buffalo, NY. Finally, after decades of litigation, a deal has been struck whereby NYS DEC Bureau of Fisheries will receive a damage award of $12,000,000.00 to be used solely for the Lake Ontario sport fishery. This reward is compensation for damages to the fishery caused by the Love Canal groundwater pollution fiasco. The money can only be spent on matters pertaining to the Lake Ontario fishery and not anything else. You can bet we will keep abreast of how the monies are spent. I am certain a good number of improvement projects will be commissioned and our great fishery will become even better.

For several years DEC biologists have used seine nets to determine the amount of natural reproduction of Chinook salmon. In 2006 they estimate some 5,000,000 wild fish were hatched. This is a sizeable number and may have a positive effect on our overall lake Chinook population. While we know how many are born, we do not know how many reach adult status. DEC is looking to spend some of the $12,000,000.00 on a state of the art automatic fish marking system that can process 60,000 fish in an 8 hour period; if we can mark our hatchery fish with this system we will know for sure how many of the returning adults are wild. Simply, they will have no fin clips or coded nose tags. Now we can know for certain just what effect wild fish are having on the salmon population. We definitely need the marking system. Every Lake Ontario angler that I know is in favor of the purchase of this state of the art device.

Fishing for trout and salmon can be an exhilarating experience. Catching these magnificent fish, enjoying the splendor of beautiful Lake Ontario, and spending the day with me and my crew can be just what the doctor ordered. As I have said before, I get as excited about each new season as I have in my previous 20 plus years on the water. I am a lucky man to do what I do. We hope you will fish with us this year.

Fishing in the derbies provides loads of fun and adds some “spice” to the charter outing. My 1st mate and I are entered in allevents. Who knows, the big winner could be you.
