BOEF’s vision is to contribute to the development of human capital in Abu Dhabi by providing the community with high quality education resulting in the individual achievement of significant learning outcomes by as many national and expatriate residents of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as we can serve.

BOEF’S MISSION

To set up new learning-centered educational institutions (day-care centres, K-12 schools, higher education institutions and management consultancy training offices) that will share the BOEF vision and implement it against key performance indicators at institutional, program and individual levels.

Continuously assess and collect data to improve our performance at the teaching/training levels, course levels and at the wider institutional level. 2. AJYAL INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

AJYAL International School opened its doors for the first time in September 2014. This is the flagship school of

the Bin Omeir Education Foundation, the first in a series of high quality learning establishments to be set up

by the Foundation across different countries, with different age groups and different curricula. However, at

its core, BOEF will hold true to the binding principles of its vision statement across all its institutions.

AJYAL International School's new building is impressive, with an eye-catching and architecturally distinctive

elliptical outline. Inside, is an Aladdin's cave of bright, modern and well-equipped classrooms with break-out

areas and shaded play spaces, bespoke science labs, design & technology rooms, art and music studios, up-to-

date ICT facilities, a well-stocked library, large auditorium, gymnasium and swimming pools. AJYAL provides a

state-of-the-art learning environment befitting families seeking to give their children the best possible start in

the 21st century.

6. BEHAVIOUR We expect high standards of behaviour and good manners as the norm. In order to ensure a positive experience for all members of the AJYAL School community, courtesy, respect and self-discipline are encouraged at all times. It is important that all students remember the ‘three Rs': Respect for themselves Respect for others Responsibility for their actions Treating others as you expect to be treated. A detailed Behaviour Policy, which outlines our system of rewards and sanctions, can be found on the school website and will be sent to parents enlisting their support. 6. HOUSE SYSTEM Placing students in Houses is designed to promote a sense of belonging within the school community and healthy competition in a variety of individual and collective activities. All students will be placed in one of four Houses, with siblings placed in the same House where possible. Members of staff will also be placed in Houses. House Captains are elected by students. The Houses are named after the four colours of the UAE flag

House points are awarded throughout the year for personal effort and achievement in academic work and positive contributions to the AJYAL community. House points are continuously totalled and the leading House announced at the end of each week and term. At the end of the academic year, the winning House will be declared the House Champions and receive a special trophy.

Bus Monitor We encourage students of all ages to share their ideas and to make positive contributions to the school’s development. DAILY ROUTINE 9. Pick-Up & Drop-Off Entrances:

FS1&FS2 students enter and exit through the KG Entrance at the front of the school

Years 1-11 enter and exit through the Rear Entrance.

Years with FS siblings enter through the KG Entrance.

The Main Entrance is only used by students who are late arriving or late departing from school. 10. SCHOOL DAY Students may arrive at school from 7.30am. The school day starts for all students at 8.00am with the National Anthem, registration, then followed by lessons. For FS1 and 2, and Year 1 students, the school day ends at 1.10pm. The primary and secondary school ends at 2.50pm with school buses leaving by 3pm. Students who use school transport, and those waiting for siblings in Year 2 and above can remain until School buses leave at 3.00pm. Students have two breaks during the school day. Breaks for FS1, FS2 and Year 1 students are staggered throughout the day. 11. NATIONAL ANTHEM At 8.00 am each morning, the UAE National Anthem will be played across the campus. All persons on campus are kindly requested to stop what they are doing and stand still until the Anthem has finished.

12. LATE ARRIVALS Students must report and register at the Main Reception if they arrive at school after the student entrances are locked from 8.00am. A Late Pass must be collected from the Reception and handed to the class teacher. We understand that circumstances beyond your control may result in occasional lateness, but we trust that this will happen very rarely. Punctuality is a sign of respect to others in the school community, and is very important. Because of this, repeated late arrival at school and/or at lessons will be followed up in line with our Behaviour Management Policy, which can be found on our website. 13. BUSES The FAST bus service provides transportation at the beginning and end of the school day. It will operate a near-to-door service. Buses are equipped and maintained to the highest standards. Each bus is allocated a Bus Supervisor to oversee the students. The Bus Supervisor has access to a mobile phone to contact the school and/or transport company if necessary. Please note that we expect all students to show respect for the Bus Supervisor and Driver and to comply with safety regulations on school transport. Students who fail to follow the rules create a risk to all passengers and may not be permitted to use school transport. Further details and queries about the bus service are available from the Student Services Officer. 14. ATTENDANCE Taking students out of school during the academic year can be significantly damaging to students' learning and is actively discouraged. Please note that appointments for routine dental or medical appointments should be made out of school time. If appointments with specialist consultants during the school day are unavoidable, please let us know as soon as the appointment is made. Please bring a copy of the appointment card so that we can record this as an authorised absence. Students arriving late or leaving early for routine medical appointments or for non-emergency family reasons will be recorded as absent without authorisation for half a day. If you do need to take your child out of school for one or more days for an unavoidable reason, please complete the form at the end of this handbook and send it to the Key Stage Leaders as early as possible. Written authorisation must be given by the Key Stage Leaders before the absence. Without this authorisation, your child's absence will be recorded as unauthorised. Students who have over 20 days of unauthorized absence must repeat the year as per ADEC guidelines. Further detail is available in the Attendance Policy, which can be found on our website. 15. BREAK AND LUNCH TIME

Students may choose to spend their free time at break and lunch in designated areas inside or outside the school building. All areas will be supervised.

16. ENGLISH NATIONAL CURRICLUM (ENC) The English National Curriculum (www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-curriculum) is an established and newly revised framework developed in the UK and used by AJYAL International School, which sets out:

17. The Significant Learning Model and the Student Competency Framework The Significant Learning Model underpins Ajyal schools approach to designing students’ learning experiences and works in tandem with our delivery of the English National Curriculum. The six areas of Significant Learning complement each other and the ENC to create an integrated, personalised and dynamic learning experience for all students. They encapsulate and define the learning outcomes for students at AJYAL International School and are:

Application - use of skills and thinking (critical, creative & practical)

Integration – connecting ideas, people and different areas of students’ lives

HOMEWORK AND HOMEWORK DIARIES We see homework as an important part of students’ school experience. Learning at home encourages students to be proactive and independent learners and allows you to be an informed and active participant in your child’s learning. Through our website and/or the Homework Diary, teachers will provide specific details about homework assignments and about how you can best support your child. The following table outlines our general homework guidelines:

Students in Year 3 upwards use their Planners to record specific homework assignments. Teachers may also write notes for your child, or for you. Please check and sign the planner every day. We encourage you to

write your own notes/messages for individual teachers to ensure effective and timely communication of any questions or concerns you may have. Teachers will sign messages in the Diary to acknowledge receipt. 21. HOME-SCHOOL COMMUNICATION Good communication between home and school is of the utmost importance. There is a clear chain of communication which we ask you to follow so that we can respond quickly to your questions and concerns. First, please raise any issue with your child's class teacher/form tutor. Because teachers spend most of their time in the classroom, we ask you to make an appointment in advance and after-school, by writing in the student planner or by emailing the teacher directly. Email addresses for teachers are generic and comprise the teacher's first name and surname separated by a full-stop and followed by @ajyal.sch.ae, for example [email protected] If you would like to discuss the issue further, please contact the respective Learning Manager responsible for your child's Key Stage. The Learning Manager may refer the matter to the Deputy Principal and/or Principal. Methods of home-school communication include

Serious complaint email: [email protected] 22. REPORTS You will receive reports every term, in December, February and June. The first two are interim progress reports focussing on effort and achievement, and the final report in the third term is a detailed account of progress and attainment. Please note that reports will not be issued before the published date, but may be collected from the school after the end of term. 23. PARENT-TEACHER CONSULTATIONS Parent-Teacher Consultations will be held close to the time reports are issued, to allow parents an opportunity to discuss their child's academic progress and well-being. An appointments system will be in place to minimise waiting time. Details will be sent home approximately two weeks before meetings take place. Students are encouraged to attend Parent-Teacher Consultations from Year 6 upwards.

24. HOME-SCHOOL AGREEMENT All students and parents are asked to sign the Home-School Agreement committing to support the school in its mission to ensure every child has an equal opportunity to become a confident, caring and successful global citizen. 25. UNIFORM AND DRESS CODE We want all our students to wear their school uniform with pride: a high standard of personal appearance is expected of all students at all times both at school and outside in the community. School uniform is compulsory and may be purchased from ZAKS Al Raha Mall. Please ensure all items of uniform are clearly labelled with your child’s name. Shoes should be plain black. Jewellery: all student may wear a watch. Girls are permitted to wear one small pair of plain, stud earrings, which must be removed for PE. Boys are not to wear jewellery. Jewellery worn for religious reasons must be formally requested by parents in writing and approved by the school. Hair and Make-up: all students must have natural coloured hair. Girls' hair should be tied back off the face. Henna tattoos are only acceptable for religious/cultural reasons. Make-up and nail polish must not be worn. Boys' hair must be above the collar and off the ears and face. Boys are expected to be clean shaven. Beards and shaved heads are only acceptable for religious/cultural reasons. School Bags: trolley bags are not suitable for school for Health & Safety reasons and because they do not fit into the lockers. Students may use a small book bag to carry small items, but are encouraged to keep and access items in their lockers. 26. CHANGING FOR PE Students must wear the correct PE kit and change for PE in accordance with school policy (see section 40). 27. SWIMMING All students will take part in swimming as part of their PE program. Swimming will be separate for boys and girls. Fully qualified coaches, life guards and PE staff will cover all swimming activities. Students must wear appropriate swim wear and change in accordance with school policy (see section 40). 28. SCHOOL SHOP The School Shop will sell stationery and exercise books to students. A full list of available supplies will be uploaded onto the school website. 29. INTERNET Internet access is available to students at AJYAL International School. It offers a huge resource which can greatly enhance students' learning. However, the school wants to work in partnership with parents to promote a responsible attitude among students towards ICT, and a full awareness of e-safety issues. Students will be asked to sign an AJYAL International School Acceptable Usage Policy. Additionally, parents will be asked to sign an AJYAL International School Internet Consent Form to allow their child to access the Internet at school.

30. MOBILE PHONES Mobile phones and other electronic devices are not allowed to be used on school premises, school trips and school transport, unless allowed by senior management in special circumstances. Please note that students are responsible for the care and security of their own phones. We accept no responsibility for loss or damage to mobile phones. The school telephone at reception is always available for emergencies. 31. STUDENT WELFARE The School Nurse will be on site for the duration of the school day and has access to fully equipped medical rooms. If your child is unwell the School Nurse will contact you so that you can collect your child from school. If your child requires medication at school, please contact the School Nurse directly with clear instructions. All medication must be registered with the School Nurse. If your child is unable to attend school, please contact the school Reception or email [email protected] If your child has any worries or concerns, s/he can discuss these with any member of staff. The class teacher, tutor, or Vice Principal is often the best person to approach for advice and support. However, we also have a Student Counsellor who will work closely with students in need of additional support. Students may make appointments with the Student Counsellor during their break times. If you would like to speak with the Student Counsellor, please make an appointment or telephone outside the break times given above. 32. FOOD AND DRINK Students may bring their own packed lunch and snack or, for those in Years 2 to 11, purchase food from caterers KEITA in the canteen at both break and lunch times. Cash will be required or exchange of vouchers. Menus can be viewed on the school website. Special dietary requirements for halal, vegetarians and nut allergies will be catered for. Parents must inform the School Nurse about children with highly allergic conditions. Packed lunches and snacks should be healthy and nutritious and should not contain chocolate, sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks. In an endeavour to prevent accidental allergic reactions, students bringing their own packed lunches and snacks may not share these with other students. Students should bring a named water bottle to school every day. No other food & drink must be sent to school. 33. BIRTHDAYS No birthday celebrations are allowed in school. 34. EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES In addition to educational visits and events which complement classroom based learning, we will offer extra-curricular after-school activities according to pupil interest.

35. LOST PROPERTY Lost property will be kept in a central location, which students and parents can access. Please ask at the Main Reception. Named items will be returned to students. It will be extremely difficult to return unnamed items, so please ensure all items are named. MISCELLANEOUS 36. SECURITY

Professional security guards are contracted at AJYAL International School

An extensive network of CCTV cameras operates across the school

After 8.00 am all student entrances are locked for the duration of the school day

Security doors are strategically placed within the building to prevent unwarranted entry

All visitors are given temporary Visitor ID badges at reception prior to being allowed to enter the school

Regular emergency evacuation drills will be held throughout the academic year

Registration of students takes place each morning and afternoon with systems in place to monitor late arrivals and absentees

37. Orison Orison is the information management system used to store parent and student data confidentially. When the system is up and running, individual account user names and passwords will be generated and sent to parents. You will be able to update and amend your contact information and access information about the school and about your own child’s achievement and progress. Students' reports, attendance and other important school documents will also be published on Orison. 38. PARENTS' GROUPS We value your support and participation and look forward to working closely with you. Please see our website for further details. In addition to day to day contact and communication, we will offer the following opportunities to become more formally involved in the life of AJYAL International School

'AJYAL Parents' Association' meets with the Principal and provides valuable advice and feedback about the school

A Parent Representative for each class liaises with the class teacher/tutor and with other parents.

Request for leave of absence from school for during term time Please read notes below and complete all sections of the form.

Please complete this form and submit it to your child/ren’s Learning Manager at least 10 days before the requested absence. Please note that it is your legal duty to ensure your child/ren’s regular attendance at school. Family holidays should be taken during school holidays and children should not be taken out of school unless it is absolutely unavoidable. The Principal may authorise leave of absence but will consider the reasons for the request, the effect on the continuity of the child/ren’s learning and overall attendance. Please remember that the application for leave should be made well in advance and you are strongly advised to apply for leave of absence before you confirm any holiday arrangements. PE Changing Policy

FS 1 – Y5 PE Lessons All students in the above years must come to school in their PE kit on the days when they have PE lessons.

They will remain in their PE kit all day. If students wish to change into their school uniform after PE, they may

do so during break or lunch time. Student must bring PE trainers and school shoes.

Swimming Lessons All students in the above classes must wear swim suits under their school uniform and change at the start of

the Swim lesson. After the Swim lesson, students must change out of swim wear into school uniform. Students

must remember to bring appropriate underwear when they change into school uniform. Students will be

informed about when they swimming.

Y6 – Y11 PE Lessons Students who have a PE lesson first period must come to school in PE kit and bring school uniform to change into after the PE lesson. All other students in the above years must come to school in full school uniform and change into PE kit at the start of the PE lesson. After the PE lesson, all students change back into school uniform, unless PE is the last period of the day when students may go home in PE kit. Swim Lessons All students in the above years must change into swim wear at the beginning of the Swim lesson and back into school uniform at the end of the Swim lesson. PE Kit For PE lessons, all students must wear the AJYAL PE T-shirt and shorts as provided by the school suppliers. White socks and appropriate trainers must also be worn. For Swim lessons, swim wear should be swim specific, snug but not loose fitting. All students must have flip flops and robes in case we had to evacuate the building. Shoes and Trainers: All students must wear school shoes to school and change into PE trainers when they have PE lessons. They must then change back into their school shoes. Socks: Please ensure your son/daughter are changing their socks for PE as this is hygienic and needs to be done for every lesson. 40.
