The use of glass structurally has become more adventurous over the last ten years as the design

techniques, computer analysis software and fabrication capabilities have become more sophisti-

cated. The speaker recounts his experience in the field of structural glass from its early days to

the latest completed projects and further concepts. He will illustrate the important balance of the

relationship between innovation, design approach and those that make and build.

A number of the most ambitious structural glass projects in the world today have been commis-

sioned by Apple Inc., including the latest store at IFC mall in Hong Kong. The speaker will describe a

number of these examples illustrating the glass technology developed to ensure their success. There

will be a focus on glass staircases, façades and overall structures. This will be of interest to structural

engineers, architects and façade consultants involved in structural glass and its potential.

Acknowledged as an authority on the structural use of glass, James is perhaps best known for his

highly innovative glass stairs, bridges, facades and other structural elements in a a range of Apple’s

flagship retail stores including Tokyo, Sydney, Shanghai, Hong Kong, New York and London,. His on-

going interest in the development of structural glass design has led to the firm’s involvement with

many challenging and award winning glass projects around the world. This was recognized in 2010

when the practice won the Queens Award for Enterprise in the category of Innovation.
