AIT was the rst educational institution in Australia tooffer courses in motion capture technology. The recentlycommissioned motion capture system is designed andmanufactured by Organic Motion of New York, and is therst of its kind implemented in Australia.
Motion capture is an innovative real-time solutioncombining hardware and software for motion tracking andreal-time animation. This equipment enables animatorsto easily transform the motion of a person into a digitalsignal where the animator could effortlessly control thevirtual character.
The hardware comprises of sixteen camera sensorsinstalled around the system which detects the full rangeof movements by the actor and replicates the realistichuman movement onto a character. The resultinganimated sequences are designed to meet the insatiablepublic who are fascinated by lms such as Avatar, ToyStory 3, orLord of the Rings. A similar motion capturetechnology is also used to produce some of the bestselling international video games like the Uncharted 2and
Assassins Creed II.
These digitised movements may be applied to a widerange of unique functions and research such as high levelgame interface and virtual stage performance.
Here at AIT, we lead students through the entire MotionCapture process - from initial setup through to optimisati onand post-production. This empowers students to addrealistic human-like behaviour to their original gamesand animation work which they could proudly add to theirprofessional portfolio. Our collaboration with other motioncapture pioneers around the World allows us an endlessrealm of research opportunities.
www.organicmotion.com
Virtools, a behaviour engine and real-time renderwas introduced into AITs curriculum back in 2003 toaccelerate the understanding of the elements of complexprogramming.
Virtools is one of the very few commercial tools that offera complete range of features that enable users to createvirtual environments with a simple click-of-a-mouse,without the need for complex coding. A user does not haveto be procient in any specic programming language tobe able to give their objects behaviour and reaction tohuman input within its environment.
Adding physics to an object such as gravity or elasticitycan easily be done on Virtools. Unusual behavior canbe given to objects within a virtual environment thereby, creating an interactive world of ones own imagination. Some examples of commercial Virtools games are:Mercury Meltdown (available on Sony PSP and NintendoWii); Sarkaban Game Studios Lazy Raiders (available onXbox Live Arcade); and Facebooks rst ever 3D gamecalled Billions, Save Them All.
This powerful technology is not simply restricted tocreating games. Virtools is widely used in industry asit allows individuals to create rapid prototype throughthe modern visual scripting. This allows businesses to
harvest their capabilities for the efcient development ofcomplex 3D visual models or simulations.
Virtools was also used to support t he rst ever World ExpoOnline experience that brought unprecedented real-time3D interactivity and 360-degree immersive walkthroughexperience to hundreds of millions of online visitors of therecent World Expo 2010 Shanghai event.
AIT remains the sole training provider of 3DVIA Virtoolsin Australia.

Client Projects
Client Projects provide an opportunity for AIT students to apply theknowledge and skills obtained in their studies to real industry projectsfor an existing business. Representatives of companies from variousindustries work closely with students in developing a tangible projectfor their organisational needs. This can include projects ranging fromcompany websites & brand identity, promotional animation, architecturalvisualisation, to online educational resources and many more.
The Client Project provides students with valuable lessons in the areasof team work, meeting project deadlines, reporting, presenting andadhering to project brief. AITs degree provides a pathway into the Games Development workforce
through its inclusion of 2D, 3D and animation components, as well as providing
for a broader and unique context of web design and ilm, both of which are
important in the increasing convergence of games related art and technology
utilised for ilm, the web and the growth of online gaming. The understanding
and application of these areas will greatly improve the employability of
graduates with this qualiication in the industry.

I believe AITs program offers a solid grounding in the technologies and
attitude required for someone who is l ooking to gain entry into the interactive
media industry. Being a broad industry, I believe this course strikes a solid
balance between the different streams of media and also between theoretical
knowledge and practical application of skills.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY
As the coordinator of a higher degree in interactive media (The Master ofInteractive and Digital Media), I watched the development of AITs degree
program with great interest. The course meets the strong demand for an
undergraduate degree in the ield that provides both uptodate industry
based training and the theoretical and critical skills necessary for further
tertiary study. Currently, Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) and the Academy of
Information Technology enjoy a strong relationship, with eligible graduates
coming to SCA to undertake further study.
