PYP EXHIBITION

The end of the PYP road

What is the PYP Exhibition?By Tomoko, grade 5

The PYP Exhibition is a bigproject that the grade 6 studentsprepare and present to other stu-dent, their family and the localcommunity. This year’s centralidea is: Through small actions, everyone can make an impact.

The grade 6 students have re-searched interesting topics andcompleted actions connected totheir topic.

The exhibition gives the studentsa chance to show what they havelearned so far.

Our last interview with Sander poses questions

related to the IB profile attributes and how they

have affected his life.

The IB Learner Profile Attributes are: Risk-taker,

communicator, thinker, inquirer, principled, open-

minded, caring, balanced, knowledgeable and re-

flective

It is always sad to see students leave AIS, but it is

a natural process in the journey of life. As our stu-

dents continue to other schools, projects and ad-

ventures we wish them all well, in their journeys

and hope that they will return or keep in touch to let

us know how their journey is going.

“I always meet problems with a smile”

What attributes are connected to the exhibition?

When the grade 6 students are preparing the exhibition, they are risk-takers , inquirers and knowledgeable. Allthese words are in the “IB LEARNER PROFILE”.

How do the students show their learner profile attributesthrough their work with the exhibition?

They show that they are risk- taker by researching, prac-ticing a lot and trying to present it in front of lot of people. Then they show that they are inquirers by researchingdeeply about their action. They are also being knowl-edgeable about their actions by inquiring and research-ing.

By Tomoko, grade 5

We have so much to celebrate as theschool year draws to a close!

EXHIBITION COUNTDOWN

Week 1 The students make up a set of rules on how they are going to work together - this is called an essential agreement. They think about their subject, the sub-subjects and the key questions they wish to base their research on. The students will also meet their mentor in week one.

Week 2 This is the time to write down where they are going to find their information. This could be in books, on the Internet, through live interviews, etc. It is all known as source information. They have their a weekly meeting with the mentor and their research begins.

Week 3 The group meet with their mentor and continue their research.

Week 4 The group meet with their mentor, continue research and start thinking about the action they are going to do.

Week 5 The group meet with their mentor and continue source documentation and general topic research.

Week 6 The group meet with their mentor, write down the action they are going to do and make invitation and thank you cards.

Week 7 The group meet with their mentor, complete their action and finish their invitation and thank you cards.

Week 8 The group write action plan reflections and start the preparation for their presentations.

Week 9 The group document their reference lists, review their action reflections and go through example questions within their group and with other groups.

Week 10 Final reflections, and preparations, then SHOW TIME!

The PYP Exhibition enables the student to develop their risk-taking skills by:Communicating with a variety of people connected to their line of inquiry

Following-up on their idea for their action and completing the actionPresenting their work to other schools, family and the local community

Risk-taking is not to be taken likely! Our PYP 6th grade students will bevery familiar with this attribute by the time they complete their PYP Exhibi-

tion presentation. They’ve had plenty of practice in the time they havebeen at AIS, but nothing prepares students for the full effect of risk-tak-

ing like the exhibition presentation.

The IB programme says we are risk-takers when:

Creative arts have impacts on our emotions and lives.

Hanna: I choose this subject because music and colour highly interests me. I love music andart. and have wondered how they affect us. I got the chance to find out in the exhibition.

The exhibition is a very stressing experience, and there’s a lot of work to do, but when you’refinished, it’s a great relief.

I did some experiments in class with some coloured light bulbs, that change colour with the helpof a remote. The teachers and I set them up across the classroom, and they shone on the tableswhile the students worked on Math. I did a series of experiments with different colours. I didthe experiment to see if colours affect the students learning and emotions. I then wrote an arti-cle, and sent it to a science website. My observation was that the students felt many differentemotions, and they had many different behaviours.

Liam: I chose digital art because I like hand art and computers so that is a good mix.

The exhibition is stressful because it is a lot of work and you need to be on time. It is also fun ifyou are on time, because you get to do more stuff and eat pizza as a reward for the hard work.

My action was to have 2 lessons about digital art with 4th grade. The students were happy andinterested because it was art and they like coloring and drawing.

Arendal has 13% living under the poverty line and new numbers show

that in 2015, around 84.300 children were living under the poverty

line here in Norway. This number is increasing because many parents

don’t have jobs or education.

When refugees flee from their country they often travel in boats, it is

not rare to find young children alone on the boats or toddlers with

only one brother, sister etc…

Ways technology mediated communication can af-fect people’s lives on a daily basis

Amaris Beate (Video games): I chose this because I have always been interestedin video games, but there have been things bugging me, so I have been tryingto investigate those things to gain more knowledge of it and maybe be able to dosomething about it.

Victoria (social media): I’m addicted to social media but there have been thingson the news about people being cyber bullied and really addicted and I wantedto know more about addiction and social media and how to stop cyber-bullying.

It’s kind of stressfulbut it gets better in the end.

Amaris: My action was to present my research to 8th grade and 6th grade, then have them fill out a survey to know more about how much they use theirtime on video games and how.

Sander presents confidently and with enthusi-astic engagement research findings to PYP

Which of the IB profile attributes appeal to you the most and why? Risk taker, as I’mnot afraid of trying new things and I meet problems with a smile. Communicator because Ilike to talk (I’m never quiet) and share my ideas.

Are there any attributes that should be added? Which ones? Self-conscience: It’simportant to take responsibility and to recognize and reflect on the good and bad things youdo.

Are there any attributes that should be taken away? Which ones? They are allimportant, but I balance is something that doesn’t need to be taught, as most people thinkabout it anyway.

Which attributes do you have as a goal? Principled, as I am terrible at following rules. Ilike to do things my own way, as I can manage things better, however, sometimes it is notpossible to do things my way, but I try to anyway!

How has the IB program helped you? Yes, of course, in many areas. I am morereflective and open-minded to other people’s ideas and cultures.

Which attributes do you have as a direct result of being a student at AIS (attributes

you did not have before you started this school)? As I started in the 2nd grade, left AIS

for a short time, then in the 5th, I think the attributes have been instilled from early on, so Ifeel as if I have had them from the start.

Do you think we have any great leaders in the world? If so, who? Muhammed Ali was agreat influence. He changed people’s view about religion as he converted from Christianityto Islam. That influence the stereotype of what it was to be a Muslim.

Do you admire any people or groups from the past. If so, who? Zulu Nation is a hip hopmusic group that has taken hip hop into main stream music. They are against policebrutality.

What or who do you believe in? I am a Christian. As a believer in God, I know that I canask for forgiveness and can try my best to do better, but know that He is aware that I amimperfect and is forgiving when I make more mistakes. God has a big impact on my choices, although He is hard to follow as an example, as he is perfect.

What do you think life is all about? I think life is about learning, having a good time, enjoying life with family, experiencing relationships and believing in something.

Risk-taker

Sander is not afraid to fight for what he be-lieves in, even when there are consequences.

Communicator

Sander is a confident communicator, who ispassionate and good at acknowledging his au-dience and adapting his communication to fitthe audience. He is also great at introducing

new students to school.

The road to graduation is seldom smooth. Teenagers face many challenges both in andoutside of school. The Learner Profile attributes prepare and challenge young people to

aspire to what they believe their true potential is. Sometimes the flowers are alreadyblooming, in some cases the seeds are sown, to bloom later. Either way, our philosophy is

to value every student at AIS for who they are and who they aspire to be.

We look forward to hearing about where their journeys have taken them!

Friendship

The project focused on two main questions:

What makes a good friend?

How can you be a good friend?

Ms. Remelda, the 5th grade Assistant, organized a project, that was linked to the

unit and her personal studies in children and youth work. The main idea was to inquire

about the meaning of friendship, identify how friendships work and think about the things we do

to maintain friendships.

Student ideas: What makes a good friend?

● They are kind and helpful

● They support your feelings

● Someone you feel in your heart, for life

● Someone you feel comfortable with

Student ideas:How can you be a good friend?

● Say kind things

● Be available and show support

● Stand up for what is right

● Forgive mistakes

A piece of paper was put on a student’s back. Theirclassmates finished the statement “You are…” with kind

words. They also watched a video on friendship.
