Let’s Make Only Improvements

Wally Byam is often quoted as having said, “Let’s not make any changes — let’s make only improvements” about his

beloved Airstreams. That’s my philosophy as well about Airstream Life magazine.

You may have noticed that Airstream Life looks a little different this issue. Ever since our first

publication in 2004, the magazine has been gradually evolving in appearance and content, as we’ve tried to

find the perfect mix. Most of the time the improvements have been subtle, but with this issue you can’t help but

notice a big difference in appearance.We’ve made improvements throughout, because our

readers have asked us to. Airstream Life subscribers have never been shy about telling us what they like—and what they don’t like—and we appreciate that. I read every subscriber letter and email, and share them with the rest of the staff so that we can continually improve.

Our subscribers asked for better readability, and they got it. We’ve chosen fonts and designed a “cleaner” article template, with the goal of being easy on the eye.

They asked for more photos and larger photos. Over the past year we’ve printed more shots of Airstreams than ever before. Our new layout format allows even bigger pictures and more dramatic layouts, as you will see in this Online Edition.

Many readers want more interior pictures of customized Airstreams, and we’re actively hunting them up. You’ll see a great example in the “Orvis” article this issue, and note that we’re running the pictures as big as possible so you can pore over every detail. Even the Inbox section has been revised to allow bigger photos submitted by our readers (so please keep sending them!)

And most importantly, readers asked us not to lose the classic features of Airstream Life that they enjoy the most. So although the look has changed a little, popular departments like Old Aluminum, Towing, National Parks, Last Mile

An Airstreamer’s View Of The Golden GateI have an Airstream Photo that you might find interesting from a recent caravan we took. This was taken on the Golden Gate Bridge on June 12, 2011. My wife, Lynda, poked her camera up through the open sunroof of our tow vehicle.

We were traveling with three other members – “like minded friends” – from the WBCCI South Coast California Unit. We were heading to Oregon to take part in a 30 day caravan (“Sampling Oregon”) organized by the Oregon Unit of WBCCI. An enjoyable time was had by all!

See You On The Road, Senator!Hello,I thought you might like this photo of me and Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal in front of my Airstream at the New London County Relay for Life on June 25, 2011. The Airstream was used as a base camp for my family during this 24 hour walk-a-thon to raise money for cancer.

Senator Blumenthal visited the event to lend support and meet with family members and cancer survivors. He visited with us and then asked for a tour of our 22 ft International CCD. He was very impressed with the trailer. In fact I would not be surprised to see him tooling around the country in his very own Airstream someday!

What Wine Goes with S’Mores?



Next time you’re looking for a good wine to with your hot dogs and s’mores, try a good cabernet or a merlot. Seriously. Such is the advice of Jeffrey Dye, founder and enthusiastic proprietor of Happy Camper Wines, the wine with the silver travel trailer on the label.

“Cabernet goes well with chocolate. As a matter of fact, when people taste a merlot they often describe it as having chocolate flavors, so a good cabernet goes very well with s’mores.”

Don’t worry about what wine to serve with those hot dogs, or even the beanie-weenies either. “Merlot goes particularly well with hot dogs. I don’t find hot dogs to have a real pronounced, strong flavor. Merlots are a softer red wine that goes well with the pork or the beef in the hot dog. The acidity of the wine will help cut the mustard or the ketchup in the hot dog. Any wine will do, but the merlot in particular is good.”

Dye is serious about his fireside food recommendations, but also urges campers to ignore what they’ve heard about what wine to pair with what food.

“Throw the traditional wine rules out the window. A lot of people say you need to serve white wine with fish, red wines with steak. I say ignore that. Drink what you like. Don’t believe all this hoopla and wine talk about wine codes. Try different things and when you find something you like, make it a staple no matter what you’re serving.

After all, Dye said, “Wine drinking doesn’t have to be an indoor activity and it doesn’t have to be stuffy or formal. There’s really nothing better than sitting by a fire with a glass of wine and a good meal—whether it’s hot dogs, steaks, chicken or burgers.”

With a name like “Happy Camper Wine,” it’s obvious Dye is all about the fun of wine drinking and not about the traditional leather chairs, darkened rooms, or tile-floor wine cellars that most people think of when they hear the word wine. Dye is also about the outdoor lifestyle, and its connection to good living, including wine.

“I wanted to come up with a wine and a brand that celebrates the camping lifestyle,” he said. And he did. Located in San Martin, Calif., Happy Camper Wine is distributed around the country and is definitely targeted at the outdoor market of RV’ers and campers. If the name itself wasn’t fun enough, check out the labels. The silver trailer on the label isn’t an Airstream, although it was inspired by the iconic imagery of a variety of compact trailers. It’s definitively evocative of the shimmering sultriness of an Airstream.

Each of the bottles, chardonnay, merlot and the cabernet sauvignon have different label backgrounds—the desert, a grove of redwood trees, or a quiet beach at day’s end. The label and the wine itself makes it a unique item among campers, Dye said.

“A bottle of wine is a great gift that’s always appreciated, and when you bring another camper a bottle with a camper on the label it always stimulates conversation.”

Airstream trailers are as much a part of the wine culture of California as its vineyards, says Michael Merriman. Merriman, of PaladinWine Marketing, is Dye’s friend, mentor and number-one advocate of Airstream trailers in Napa Valley.

“I’ve got an eye for Airstreams and have seen them tucked away on almost every vineyard in the valley,” he said. Merriman, who owns a 1958 Flying Cloud, is letting Dye use his Airstream to promote Happy Camper Wine while Dye looks for his own silver dream trailer. “I’m going to put the Happy Camper Logo on the side of my Airstream and take it cross country and really promote the wine in style,” Dye said.

If you’re not a wine drinker, there’s no reason to be intimidated. Dye offers tips for any wine lover or the wine-curious camper:


“Keep white wines chilled. An ice chest or refrigerator is fine. Red wines should be stored and kept at room temperature. If red wines are too cold, it makes the tannins too pronounced and will make your mouth pucker,” he said. “The trunk of a car in the hot sun is not room temperature. Try to keep the wine out of extreme heat whenever possible.”

“Once you open up a bottle of wine the best thing to do is to drink it all. If you only plan to have one or two glasses put the cap back on and refrigerate it as soon as possible. An opened bottle will taste fine for a couple of days, but you’ll still be able to tell a difference in the taste after only a day.”

“Wine glasses are shaped the way they are for a reason. The stem on a wine glass keeps your hand from imparting body heat to the wine, and the shape of the glass allows the drinker to swirl the wine in order to smell it better. The glass itself makes a difference in the taste as well. Wine will taste different in a dishwasher-safe, big-box store wine glass ($1.99–$5 per glass) than it will in a Riedel crystal glass ($49–$59 per glass).”

“However, if you’re not a wine connoisseur or you’re just out having fun, a plastic stadium cup is fine,” he said. “The whole point is to share with friends and family and to have a good time. Get to where life is good and just enjoy it.”

A Holiday Treasure FROM ORVIS


Custom patina-distressed copper and calico hickory set the tone for this unique Airstream, lovingly customized for Orvis. The trailer will be auctioned for the benefit of charity, in November.

The Orvis Company commissioned Timeless Travel Trailers in Denver, CO to design and build this trailer, to be showcased in Orvis’ annual Holiday Catalogue.

Timeless’ Designer, Danielle Garrison, envisioned the trailer interior to compliment Orvis’ stylistic qualities, which set the theme for this Airstream. The interior has a warm and inviting cabin atmosphere with calico hickory cabinets and walls, a supple leather sofa with nail head trim, tooled leather in the wainscot and above, with green jewel tones repeated throughout.

This 1954 Airstream Flying Cloud was selected for the project due to the well maintained body and its vintage charm. The 13-segment forward interior end cap was recreated in weathered copper panels, reflecting a rich patina. The classic “California whale tail” segments in the aft are covered in the interior with veneered hickory. All the cabinets, wardrobe and drawers are hand made using hickory solids and veneers, with wrought iron Emtek “branch” drawer and door pulls. The six-bottle overhead wine rack is a Timeless custom design.

The galley features Formica solid surface counter tops in “Botanical Mosaic,” a stainless round sink by Kindred, and matte black plumbing fixtures by Moen. A Hamilton Beach stainless steel microwave and a two burner Wedgewood cook top with a custom patina-distressed copper cooking vent hood completes the galley food prep area. The refrigerator/freezer is a Norcold N600 which holds 6.3 cubic feet of goodies. Recessed LED lighting throughout is by Häfele in a fixture called “Loox,” in addition to custom retrofitted wrought iron wall sconces by Timeless with rawhide shades from Colorado Rustic Log Furniture.

four speaker audio system. The round table is also a custom made item from the craftsman at Timeless. Valences were upholstered by Ramos Upholstery who also fabricated the circular sofa in Keleen Leathers.

Window coverings are Grasscloth roller shades by Smith+Noblepro. The thick plank flooring in Antique Oak is by Armstrong featuring a 2.25” thick plank, milled by Timeless to 3/8” thickness to reduce weight. Tooled leather wall coverings are by Concertex wall coverings, and are placed strategically throughout the interior.

The lavatory has a low profile china toilet by Thetford, and a custom shower enclosure handcrafted in aluminum with a stainless steel base, Moen shower head, and niches for soap and shampoo.

fabricated by Ramos Upholstery. This unique mattress with a memory foam top has a hinge to fold over when accessing the large underbed storage area. The plush green quilted down comforter and pillows are elegant amenities from Orvis.

Structurally, the Airstream has a lifted chassis for greater off-road ground clearance and new holding tanks. Two thirty pound polished LP tanks, a 25k BTU furnace by Atwood, a 6 gallon LP water heater with electric ignition by Atwood, a Quiet 30PSI water pump by Shurflo (Whisper King), electric holding tank heaters (12V or 120V) by UltraHeat and a tank monitor. Also included in this package is a 1000 watt pure sine wave inverter by GoPower, and an electric tongue jack by Atwood.

Overseas AdventureOverseas adventure awaits the lucky owner of this 1959 28-foot Ambassador International Land Yacht. But whose trailer is it, and where is it going? A little sleuthing reveals all ...

The year of manufacture can be identified by features such as the deco style name plate under the front window, the seven panel front end cap, Hehr Clear View windows all along the street side, the small mushroom cap vent on the roof for the interior heater at the front end of the kitchen galley, the small vent cover at the middle of the lower body and the shallow pointed arch of the tandem axle wheel well.

The floor plan is divulged by the street side window placement and the storage compartment door near the rear end. The top-of-the-line trim level is revealed by the beautiful “International” globe on the lowest end cap panel just forward of the front street side window.

Coats, jackets, gloves, caps and hats on the participants and observers indicate the weather is chilly. The late 1940’s Willys CJ-2A civilian jeep and Chevrolet Advance-Design flatbed truck behind it tell us the picture was taken in the USA. Another Airstream waiting behind the gent in the dark suit and cap suggests this Airstream is being loaded onto the freighter rather than being unloaded.

The lettering on the man’s jacket at the lower left reads “Tidewater Transportation,” so we believe the photograph was taken in Virginia somewhere among Newport News, Hampton Roads, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. A very close look reveals the words “Rotterdam” and “Ardean Miller” written across the front window. So this trailer’s lucky owners are Ardean and Norma Miller, WBCCI # 607. They are heading to Rotterdam and the WBCCI’s Summer 1960 Europe Caravan.

The only other overseas caravan in which the Millers participated was the 1956 European Caravan, which we covered in detail in our Fall 2007 issue. That article is illustrated with many of Ardean’s beautiful color photographs and is well worth reading again because it captures like no other the Golden Age of Overseas Caravanning. This photograph of his trailer being loaded undoubtedly was also taken by Ardean. Up, up and away!
