AIRPORTS AUTHORITY OF INDIA
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OF AIRPORTS AT
NORTH EAST DURING MAJOR DISASTERS
Mr. Sreekumar S.
Executive Director (Engg)-ER
Airports Authority of India
INDIAN AIRPORTS
• Vulnerable to a large number of natural, as well as, human-made
disasters
• Airports which have critical role, often affected by disasters
• Nearest airport can quickly become overwhelmed due to the large
volume of incoming relief supplies
• Airports play a critical role in quick disaster relief operations

DISASTER RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE
• Infrastructure systems that can anticipate, absorb, adapt to and
or rapidly recover from a disruptive hazardous event considered
resilient
• This includes structural and non-structural measures
• Flood control systems, protective embankments, seawall
rehabilitation, building codes, retrofitting of buildings, risk-
sensitive planning, hazard mapping and disaster risk financing

CHENNAI FLOODS
CHENNAI FLOODS
The airport is located in low lying area with adayar river
flowing adjacent

• Constructions of new/ expansion of existing drains within the
airport
• Installation of Hydraulic shutters to control backflow of water
• Diversion of external storm water drain into Adyar River
• This would reduce significant amount of storm water load entering
the airport
• Further, the adjacent localities also don’t have a dedicated storm
water drain
• Hence this external diversion of storm water drain would benefit
the airport

THE REINFORCED WALL
SALIENT DESIGN ASPECT CONSIDERED IN PAKYONG FOR NATURAL DISASTER –
ENGINEERING MARVEL
• The first ever Greenfield airport in North east at high altitude
• Constructed on the side slope of Dikling hill involving filling upto 74mtrs & clearing upto 55 mtrs.
• Difficult topography and hostile weather conditions
• Sustainable designing engineering services
• Water channel provided below RWY
• Almost vertical high strength earth retaining structures with geo-gridsdue to non-availability of required land width for global slopes.
• Environment friendly earth retaining structures with no steel cement &having vertical vegetation for slope protection.

3 Human Life
Detector
The Life Detection System will be used by
Rescue Workers to determine, without
risking lives by entering, whether anyone
is trapped inside a burning or collapsed
building. It should help to locate trapped
or marooned victims in a disaster area,
reducing both search time and danger to
rescuers and to find lost or Injured
people faster in hostile terrain, bad
weather, collapsed trenches, even
underwater. The system should have the
discrimination capability for detecting
only living human beings and not
decease humans or living animals.
4 Victim
Location
Equipment
Victim location systems to be acquired
are designed for location and rescue of
victims trapped under debris during
natural calamities or in mine collapses or
confined space disasters.
