Year 1978 Deregulation Act

• What is deregulation act?

• Airline deregulation: is the process of removing entry price restrictions on airlines in particular, the carrier permitted to serve any routes.

This had a big influence on airplane companies

Before the deregulation

• Government   CAB and CAA had control of the airplanes.

• Airplanes are carrying the government mail

• Then, the airplane companies pay by the government.

What is CAB?

• The full name is Civil Aeronautics Board. • This was entrusted with safety rulemaking,

accident investigation, and economic regulation of the airlines

What is CAA?

• CAA is the shortened name. • Full name is Civil Aeronautics Act.• CAA was responsible for airman and aircraft

certification, safety enforcement, and airway development

Effects

• Abandoned less profitable routes– Ex. Until 1978, United Airlines had flown to

Bakersfield, California, a booming oil town of 225,000 people

– Deregulation: United pulled out of Bakersfield, depriving the city of any flights to bigger cities, such as San Francisco or Las Vegas.

• Point to point air transport declined – Favored hub and spoke system • Ex. Delta Air Lines had a major hub at Atlanta while

Eastern ran its hub operations from Miami• Both airlines ran many daily round trip flights from their

hubs• Planes in the air for more hours each day and filling

more seats

• Brought competition– Heavy loss and conflicts with labor unions– 9 major carriers and more than 100 smaller

airlines – BANKRUPT or LIQUIDATED • Ex. Number of major carriers in the US fell from 6 in

1978 (including United, American, Delta, Eastern, TWA, and Pan Am) to three by 1991 (United, American, and Delta)

• Fare per passenger mile – 9% lower in 1994 than in 1979– Adjusting for inflation– Ticket buyers saved $100 billion on fares alone

• Passenger loads rose– Airlines can now transfer longer aircraft to longer, busier

routes and replace them with smaller ones on shorter, lower traffic routes

• Total operating revenues for the major national and international airlines rose in 1979

• Hawaiian Airlines was incorporated on January 30, 1929.

• The name Inter-island Airways Ltd. • Thousands of people gathered in Honolulu to see

the departure to other islands. • Also, the authorized inter-island airmail service.
