Airline Pilot Students Elèves Pilotes de Ligne (EPL) One Diploma, Many Qualities Enac For decades, the French government has held a competitive entrance examination for its Air Transport Pilot Course. Today the admission rate is about two percent: with 40 out of around 2,000 candidates selected each year. The selected students undertake training at the ENAC flight training school as EPL cadets, «Elèves Pilote de Ligne», Airline Transport Pilot Students. Since the beginning of the EPL Cadet scheme, ENAC has continually updated this training in order to meet the highest airline standards for cockpit and human resources management in addition to stringent safety requirements. This training currently leads to a Type Rating Entry Level Training consisting of 32 hours on an Airbus A320 simulator. As a result, with around 250 hours of practical flight training, EPLs are ready to follow a multi-pilot aircraft type rating course in order to begin their career as First Officers in commercial airlines. For 40 years, ENAC has earned very high satisfaction ratings from aircraft operators internationally. The global airline market will face a major demand for pilots in the near future and it is now agreed that the current number of graduates from training schools, together with the available experienced pilots, will not be sufficient to meet this demand. This pilot shortfall will become a major concern for some airlines. Therefore, there will be a demand from operators for high value EPL cadet training. This brochure provides a description of the content of the EPL cadet training course and represents a very useful tool for pilot recruiters. In my role as ENAC Director, I would be happy to accommodate any request from airlines and operators to perform a simulator session or flight evaluation of our EPL graduates. who pass the admission test: a difficult and competitive selection process which lasts more than 3 months. In addition to enthusiastic and highly qualified teachers, students benefit from cutting-edge equipment such as wind tunnels, or a jet engine laboratory. This ensures that students have both a very good general understanding, and a hands-on knowledge of their field of expertise. People involved in the flight training Flight Instructors are highly qualified, many of them holding a JAR25 type rating (A320, ATR42). Some carry out Search and Rescue missions, or take part in the calibration of navigation aids. Others are former corporate pilots, or former commercial pilots with major airlines such as Air France. Given ENAC’s solid reputation in the world of aeronautics and the quality of its programs, teachers, instructors and equipment, it comes as little-surprise that it is today one of Europe’s top centers in airline-oriented flight training. Mastering the English Language EPLs prepare for the theoretical ATPL examination and take intensive English classes (general and aeronautical) during a 9-month period, as well as throughout their flight training. By the end of their training at the ENAC University, they are required to have demonstrated knowledge of English in accordance with JAR–FCL 1.200. EPL training With this unique full training scholarship, ENAC ensures to attract and select the best students, regardless of their financial means. Our goal is to train young pilots with great potential. Even after the very selective process of admission, we expect our students to meet high standards throughout the entire training. Written examinations during ground school and flight reviews well beyond JAR requirements allow us to maintain a nearly 100% pass rate at the CPL and IR tests. This phase is longer than required by the JAA, because ENAC considers excellent un- derstanding and acquisition of IFR aptitude to be essential. This phase includes two internal tests. 5 During 3 months, 25 flight hours and 25 simu- lator hours, students operate a twin engine aircraft (Beechcraft 58 EFIS). Two main objectives for this phase : to fly and gain confidence with powerful aircraft handling, and to include the various aspects of everyday airline operations. The students take four tests during this phase, including the JAA Instrument Rating. 2 The flight training starts with VFR training on TB20 Trini- dad, and lasts 6 months. It is where students acquire their basic flying skills. From the beginning of this 100-flight hour phase we set airlines standards concerning standard and emergency call-outs. Behavior, apprehension of en- vironment and flying skills are evaluated by two internal tests. This part of the training ends with the JAA Commercial Pilot License test. 3 «Upset recovery training» is a 1-month phase during which students discover tailwheel aircraft - The CAP10 - and aerobatics. The aim is to perfect their flying skills, and to make sure they have the keys to recover from any abnormal attitude. In 2011 out of 2000 candidates who applied for admission to the ENAC program, only 40 passed the selection.

E n a cFor decades, the French government has held a

competitive entrance examination for its Air Transport Pilot Course. Today the admission rate is about two percent: with 40 out of around 2,000 candidates selected each year.

The selected students undertake training at the ENAC flight training school as EPL cadets, «Elèves Pilote de Ligne», Airline Transport Pilot Students.

Since the beginning of the EPL Cadet scheme, ENAC has continually updated this training in order to meet the highest airline standards for cockpit and human resources management in addition to stringent safety requirements.

This training currently leads to a Type Rating Entry Level Training consisting of 32 hours on an Airbus A320 simulator.
