A CROOKED group of plumbers who charged aWarwickshire resident more than £5,000 tounblock a toilet have been jailed.

The group, all from Birmingham, were convicted lastweek following an investigation by Warwickshire andStaffordshire Trading Standards.

They targeted pensioners and vulnerable between March2014 and January 2016.

In the Warwickshire incident, two plumbers turned up ata rate of £662 per hour, plus VAT, to unblock the toilet andthen returned the following day to do non-emergency workon a soil pipe at the property, again charging an emergencyrate.

The total cost of ‘unblocking’ the toilet came to £5,642,of which £2,474 was paid before Warwickshire CountyCouncil Trading Standards were alerted and intervened.

Duane Linton, 34, director of Plumb-Tech Plumbing andHeating Ltd, was jailed for two years and eight monthswhile subcontractor Otis Wray, 44, was jailed for ninemonths, and ordered to pay £2,000 costs and compensationto victims of £1,113.

Peter Hawketts, 55, was jailed for 16 months and PatrickThawe, aged 45, was sentenced to 20 months.

Cllr John Horner, Warwickshire County Council port-folio holder for community safety, said: “I am delightedthat Warwickshire Trading Standards were able to workwith regional colleagues to bring these men to court. Wewill continue to take action against rogue traders.”

Plumbers’£5k blockedtoilet bill

Airfield blaze‘not suspicious’FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a largeblaze at Long Marston Airfield on Sunday nightafter the venue hosted the annual Bulldog Bash.

It broke out at around 10.15pm and involved alarge pile of rubbish measuring around 25 metresby 15 metres to the rear of the airfield’s medicalcentre.

Two fire crews from Stratford and one fromBidford were at the scene, along with the service’swater bowser from Leamington.

The blaze was under control by around 1.30amand is not being treated as suspicious. It is notbelieved to have caused any damage to the med-ical centre building.

Major road improvements plannedWarwickshire County

Council is to part-fund thework to the tune of £2.5mil-lion with the HighwaysAgency providing the rest.

It will see the introduc-tion of signalisation andcapacity improvements ofthe island near Warwickwhere the A46, A425 andA4177 meet.

The project has beendescribed as a key elementof a number of transportstrategies to cope withhousing and growthplanned within Warwickdistrict.

The proposals are for thissection of the A46 tobecome a Highways Eng-land Expressway on thesection between theM6/M69 and M40.

It is part of the A46 Cor-ridor that is also one of theseven transport prioritieswithin the Coventry andWarwickshire Local Enter-prise Partnership’sStrategic Economic Plan.

The county council saidqueuing traffic was causing

some safety issues, withaccident analysis over thepast five years highlightinga number of incidentsinvolving rear shunts on theslip roads approaching theStanks roundabout, andsaid signal control of theroundabout should help toreduce incidents.

Concerns have also beenexpressed about the knock-on effect of the traffic con-gestion on the A46 andM40.

The council has alsoagreed to contribute£1.7million to a scheme toreduce congestion at theA444 Coton Arches round-about in Nuneaton.

The total cost of thatproject is £3.7million.

Cllr Peter Butlin, thecouncil’s portfolio holderfor transport and highways,said: “These are both keydevelopments for Warwick-shire to resolve issues aspart of this council’s com-mitment that Warwick-shire’s communities aresupported by excellent

communications and trans-port infrastructure.”

Cllr Philip Johnson,chairman of the communi-ties overview and scrutinycommittee, added: “TheA46 Stanks Island develop-ment in Warwick willgreatly improve thecapacity of this importantroad and also lead to majorimprovements in terms offacilities for pedestriansand cyclists, which is some-thing I welcome on behalfof residents.

Detail plans for the twoschemes will now be drawnup and presented to thepublic later this year.

No dates for work to starthave been set.

Teens take control ofskate parkTEENAGERS taking part in the National CitizenService (NCS) partnered up with the Mayor ofAlcester, Professor Emeritus Chris Brannigan, toput on events to promote the newly-built skatepark in Jubilee Fields.

NCS brings together 16- and 17-year-olds from dif-ferent backgrounds to complete a series of personal andteam challenges and make a difference in their commu-nity.

The promotion of the skate park formed part of theteam’s social action project. The team saw how it hadbeen blighted by graffiti and decided to design a campaignday to ensure it was used appropriately.

The event was promoted on Facebook and throughoutthe day people were invited to take part in skateboard andgraffiti competitions, with the team picking the best tengraffiti designs and gave them to the mayor for him toexplore how they could be incorporated in to the park pro-fessionally.

Professor Brannigan said: “It was great to welcomesuch a pleasant and enthusiastic group of young people tothe new skate park on Jubilee Fields.”

Riders rack up £27kin cycle challenge

CLAVERDON Rugby Club has applied for permission to extend the clubhouseand changing rooms at its base in Ossetts Hole Lane, Yarningale Common.

Stratford District Council has yet to set a date to make a decision on the plan-ning application, but it is expected to be in September.

Setting off from Myton Hospice inWarwick on Sunday, 31st July,cyclists were given the opportunityfor the first time to choose a 100kmride over demanding terrain climbingmore than 6,000 feet.

This year’s event also featured therenowned Hill Climb Challengewhere the quickest male, female andteam to reach the top of Saintbury Hillwere crowned King and Queen of theMytons 2016.

Ashley Miles was crowned thisyear’s King, Lucy Calcott was Queen,while Team Wooly were recognised asthe year’s winning team.

On returning to Warwick MytonHospice, riders were presented with amedal, a complimentary burger and amassage from a local therapist.

Drivers still ignoring drinkand drug-driving warningsEIGHTY two drivers eitherfailed a breath test or refused togive a test during a summercrackdown on drink and drug-driving.

That figure equates to nearly ten percent of the total number of driversbreathalysed by Warwickshire Policeofficers across the county’s road net-work between 10th June and 10th July.

Eight people failed the new road-side drugs test as part of the same

campaign. As well as roadside tests,the consequences of being caughtdriving under the influence of drink ordrugs were highlighted across socialmedia. The annual campaign was runslightly later this year to tie in with theEuro 2016 football tournament.

Over the past three years, 84 people

have been killed or seriously injuredin Warwickshire as a result of colli-sions involving drink or drugs.

Inspector Gareth Morgan said: “It’sencouraging that the majority ofdrivers would never think of riskingdriving after drinking alcohol and themessage appears to be getting through.However, there are still irresponsibledrivers thinking they can risk it,ignoring the devastating consequencesthat this can cause for them, theirfamily, friends and other road users.”

Two-car crash leadsto tailbacks on M40

DELAYS were caused tomotorists on the M40southbound yesterday,Monday, following a two-car crash in rush-hourtraffic.

Police were called at7.12am to the collisionbetween junction 13 forLeamington and junction12 for Gaydon.

A spokesman fromWarwickshire Police said:

“A BMW and FordCougar were involved inthe collision, but therewere no reports of anyinjuries.”

The carriageway wasclosed briefly, causingsome congestion.

At 8.30am, OPU War-wickshire tweeted a thankyou to motorists for theirpatience, who were stuckin traffic.

Bard’s top tenin timeENGLISH Heritage hasunveiled a sequel to theBayeux Tapestry that fea-tures the ten most impor-tant historic momentssince 1066, as votedfor by children acrossthe country, and itincludes the birth ofWilliam Shakespeare.

The Kids’ Tapestry hasbeen created for EnglishHeritage by children’sillustrator Liz Pichon in hersignature Tom Gates styleto mark the 950th anniver-sary of the most famousand arguably most impor-tant battle in English his-tory, the Battle of Hastings.

The artwork wasunveiled at the site of theBattle of Hastings in EastSussex, and will go on atour of historic sites aroundthe country.

But despite featuringShakespeare, the tapestrywill not actually visit Strat-ford.

Its only visit to War-wickshire will be onTuesday, 23rd August,when it goes on show atKenilworth Castle — theclosest English Heritage-owned property to theBard’s hometown.

Volunteers took tothe streets on Saturday, 11th June, with the money to be used to fund the cam-paign for increased standards of farm animal welfare.

Inquiry is held afterapartments appeal

A PUBLIC inquiry has been held intoplans for retirement apartments on theoutskirts of Stratford.

McCarthy and Stone RetirementLifestyles Ltd and Exemplar Homeswere refused permission to bulldoze221 Banbury Road and replace it with21 properties for over 55s.

Stratford District Council refusedthe planning application, citingoverdevelopment and an adverseimpact on the landscape character.

The council also ruled there wouldbe an overbearing impact on neigh-bours, mainly the loss of sunlight, andthe new residents would place pres-sure on local facilities and services.

When the plans were unveiled inFebruary last year, the company saidit had an agreement to buy 221 Ban-bury Road — the last house at the topend of the road, previously the home

of footballer Dion Dublin — subjectto planning permission. It alsoclaimed there was support locally.However, Stratford Town Councilwere among the objectors when aplanning application was submittedsome weeks later.

According to Rightmove, the house

currently on the site in question hasfive bedrooms, was built in 1927 andoccupies a large plot of land. It was onthe market for £1.15million.

The two-day inquiry was held at thedistrict council Elizabeth Houseoffices, although it is not known whena final decision will be made.

Group’s designson a happy life

The mosaic was the project of the PrimeGP’s 75+ initiative, a group whose mem-bers range from age 75-85.

Patients are provided with an opportunityto take part in social events and activitiesbased on their shared interests, with ses-sions proven to improve participants’mental wellbeing and physical health.

The group created the mosaic during ses-sions at the surgery every Friday afternoonand now forms a focal point in the waitingarea. They have decided to dedicate thepiece to their teacher, Con Twomey.

A group spokesperson said: “Being a partof this group has been such a pleasure andwe have found great comfort and supportfrom each other, plus we have made manynew friends and have learnt a valuable skillalong the way too.

“We are absolutely delighted with thefinal piece, which forms a wonderful wel-come to the centre’s waiting area, andwe’re sure it will be enjoyed by patientsand visitors alike for many months andyears to come.

Amanda Cogley, Prime75+ project man-ager, added: “The mosaic’s unveiling wasthe real cherry on the top for the group whoshould feel immense feelings of pride forwhat they have achieved over the past fewmonths.”

Chernobyl teens go back in timeA GROUP of teenagers fromBelarus, who are in remission fromcancer, were given the chance toexplore Warwick Castle during aspecial visit this month.

All 12 youngsters from the Cher-nobyl area were invited to thecastle by Warwick Rotary Club,which has organised these visits forthe past nine years.

During their visit costumedactors helped bring the 1,100-year-old castle’s history to life while thegroup enjoyed clambering up theramparts, being shown archeryskills, jousting and exploring thedungeons.

Thirty years after the nucleardisaster the area is still highly con-taminated, affecting the water and

local produce.And the Chernobyl Children’s

Project UK charity’s Solihullbranch arranges to bring the chil-dren to the UK in an effort torestore their health, with the groupaccompanied by a doctor.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead thissummer and avoid unnecessary breakdownsby ensuring their vehicle is well-maintainedbefore setting out on any long journeys.

As well as checking to make sure thevehicle service is up to date, motoristsshould check tyre pressures and oil, waterand fuel levels and top those up if needed.

With many people taking to the roads forlong drives to their summer holiday destina-tions, motorists are reminded to avoiddriving when tired. On longer journeys,plan your route to include a 15 minute breakevery two hours.

Anna Higgins, communications managerat the Safer Roads Partnership, said

“Breaking down can be a stressful experi-ence, especially on a motorway wheretraffic is passing at very high speeds. It isvital that motorists know what to do if theirvehicle does break down, to keep them-selves and their passengers safe.

“If your vehicle breaks down on themotorway, pull on to the hard shoulder asfar to the left as possible with your wheelsturned to the left, and put your hazard lightson to warn other motorists.

“If visibility is poor, you should alsoleave your side lights on.

“You and your passengers should exit thevehicle on the left hand side and move to apoint of safety behind the barrier and wellaway from the vehicle, the carriageway andthe moving traffic. If possible, move up thebank or verge, as far away from the hardshoulder as possible.”

New car sales show slowdown in JulyTHE boom in sales ofnew cars seen last yearappeared to slow downin July, according tonew figures from theSociety of Motor Man-ufacturers’ and Traders.

New car registrationsrose by just 0.1 per cent lastmonth following unprece-dented levels of growth in2015 and a strong perform-ance in the early parts ofthis year.

But the automotive sectorwas buoyed by results inseveral areas, includingfleet purchases, alterna-tively-fuelled vehicles, andsales of popular modelsfrom big manufacturers. Inthe year to date, a total of1,599,159 cars have beenregistered, putting demand2.8 per cent higher than forthe same period in 2015.

New car buyers pickedup 178,523 vehicles lastmonth, with the figuresshowing there was an evensplit between petrol anddiesel models.

Topping the list of best-sellers was the Ford Fiesta,of which 7,990 were regis-tered on top of the 71,823models sold during the yearso far. Vauxhall’s Corsa andAstra took second and thirdplace respectively, with5,606 and 4,939 unitsshifted.

Yet despite July’s disap-pointing figures, Mr Hawessuggested there was stillcause for optimism.

“With low interest rates,attractive finance optionsand exciting new modelscoming to the showrooms,the market still has lots tooffer customers.”

It was Britain’s first gold in the event since Sydney 2000and was thoroughly deserved after a storming start. Germanywere unable to claw back the leaders, finishing 1.33 secondsbehind to the delight of the British contingent in the crowd.

It marked quite the Olympic debut for Gotrel, Bennettand Durant, while Langridge, Ransley and Hill upgradedon their men’s eight bronze from London 2012.

Reed and Hodge won gold at a third straight Gameshaving helped the men’s four triumph in the last twoOlympics, while Satch added to the men’s pair bronze wonfour years ago.

Gotrel said: “It’s four years of work and it’s just anamazing achievement for all of us here and everyone who’sworked with the boat — it’s been an amazing ride.”
