The Airedale Terrier Club of Victoria Inc is affiliated with the Dogs Victoria and this show will be conducted under the rules and regulations of the Dogs Victoria Inc. a copy of which may be inspected at the office of the Secretary.

The Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry as per Dogs Victoria Regulation 3:5:13:6.

Dogs must be entered in and compete in classes for which trophies are offered.

Judging will be in catalogue order and will commence at 2 pm or at the conclusion of Lillydale Kennel Club whichever is the later.

Presentations will be held in the refreshment room.

Winners of all classes should present their exhibit to the official Club photographer for photos.

By entering this show you agree to photos taken by the Club approved photographer to be used in any way by the Club. Including but not limited to publication on ATCV website and social media pages and other publications.

Our Judge: Beverly Andersen (USA) March 2017 I have had dogs all my life. My family had a “spitz” when I was in elementary school. After his passing, we owned a pug. I used my allowance money to purchase any book on dogs I could afford. I trained our pug numerous tricks and basic obedience, all from my books. Always loving dogs, I played with our neighbors dogs, including a Gordon Setter, a Boxer, a Dandi Dinmont Terrier and a Dachshund. When we were first married we purchased a Samoyed, followed by a pet quality Gordon Setter. After attending a few dog shows, we decided to purchase a show dog, which was and English Setter, followed by a show Gordon Setter. Through years we have owned all 4 setters, English Cocker Spaniels, a lone German Shorthaired Pointer, English Springer Spaniel, Briard, Standard Poodle and Afghan. Our love stayed with the setters and the cockers. We currently have Smooth Fox Terriers. We wanted Smooths because we were looking to downsize and to find a breed with minimal grooming. We at least we had the size correct. We were instrumental in forming the Sporting Dog Association of Arizona. We are life time members in

Scottsdale Dog Fanciers Association. I taught agility in the past. I had taught an all-breed handling class for

over 10 years. We have presented at several judge’s education programs for Gordons, Irish Red and White

Setters, and for the comparison of the four setters. I am a retired pediatric audiologist and had worked with

the deaf and hard of hearing for 40 years.

I currently am AKC licensed to judge all breed Junior Showmanship, the AKC Sporting Group (Gun Dogs), 15 Terrier breeds, Doberman Pinschers, Australian Shepherds, Miniature Australian Shepherds and Best in Show. I am continuing to apply for terriers to complete the group and plan on adding additional breeds outside of the sporting and terrier groups.



A Short History of Airedales in Australia Airedale Terriers were first imported into Victoria, Australia in 1890 just 7 years after they were first recognized in

the UK. They are one of the very few breeds that have been bred and exhibited here continuously for 130 years.

Using my personal research and involvement with Airedales spanning 48 of these years, this article describes some

less publicised breed related aspects.

The Early Imports (1890 – 2018)

In 1890, the first pair of Airedales arrived safely in Melbourne from Britain. They had survived a hazardous 4-month

journey through the tropics in all possible weather conditions. A few years later, the bitch and her son were sold to a

Mr Jackson in Coolgardie which was the centre for gold mining in Western Australia at that time. So, this pair

endured another long sea voyage to a port in the west, followed by some 1,000 odd miles overland, probably by

horse and carriage along hot, dusty back roads! Sadly, the bitch did not survive.

Closer to home, the accompanying advertisement for an Airedale at stud quotes ‘Bitches conveyed from Melbourne

to Warrnambool by steamer free of charge’. It is interesting to note the lack of any length of coat on this stud dog.

Between the Two World Wars (1918 – 1945)

In 1918, Len Latchford was a colourful character who caused a sensation when he appeared at an exhibition at Government House with a trimmed Airedale. He brought this art with him from UK and pioneered it in Australia. At that time, the attitude to trimming for shows was summed up by the English Airedale breeder and judge, Mr. Holland Buckley, who wrote:

"The idea that clever trimming will deceive an experienced judge is really laughable. A broken coat can, no doubt, to the casual eye, cover a multitude of sins, and sometimes a sausage body; but how any expert can cover up, by trimming, defects of make and shape is one of those things no fellah can understand, - always allowing, of course that the judge is a capable one".

Len Latchford who bred under the ‘Aerial’ prefix, made an enormous contribution to publicizing Airedales through

writing in general publications. As a high-profile dog person and respected all-breeds judge, he encouraged many

people to became involved in Airedales during this period.

The Airedale Terrier Club of Victoria was founded in 1930. It prospered despite the historic stock market crash that

caused the Great Depression. The activities of the Club and the wealth of some of its members like Veterinary

Surgeon Neville Whiting and all-breeds judge and ATCV Life Member Bill Brilliant, were one reason why Airedales

were so popular during this difficult time. Another was the Airedales themselves with their amazing personality and

intelligence!

Meanwhile in 1932, Len got caught up in New Zealand’s dog politics by judging a Show in New Zealand for a rebel group which was set up in opposition to the New Zealand Kennel Club (NZKC). Despite this being an ‘unrecognized’ Show held in NZ, the KCC banned him for life from ever participating in any part of the Australian dog world. The consequence of this was best summed up by one from one of Len’s colleagues, Mr Ken Rowles:

“Because the dog world was his only world, the years away from his one and only love left their mark. Gone was his sartorial elegance - the tailored suit, coloured waistcoat, silver-topped walking stick and spats - his confidence was shattered, no longer did he speak with confidence in a soft and impeccable voice. It was replaced by a down-and-out alcoholic, a man who died without his friends knowing, and who was buried in a pauper's grave".



After World War Two (from 1946 – 2019)

Sister Garrard was one of the few people who kept Airedales alive during World War Two. In 1943 she sold ‘Omuka Monty’ followed by a bitch to Mae Platts, founding her Exmoor Kennels. Over the next two decades, Mae imported 7 English Stud Dogs in succession. Before 1970 importing dogs into Australia still involved a boat voyage of 3-4 months, followed by a mandatory 6 months quarantine. When the dogs were finally discharged, they were greeted with great pomp and ceremony. This resulted in the common practice of breeders to mating their bitches to the latest import.

By the 1970’s Airedales were booming with one Airedale Show claiming 178 entries! But certainly, during the next couple of decades, the number of Airedales exhibited regularly topped the terrier group. I was personally involved from 1964 – 2012 and Airedales will always be close to my heart. No doubt some of these other passionate enthusiasts who began during these years will be present today.

In wishing Airedale Terrier Club of Victoria Inc all the best for its 90th Anniversary Show, I hope our future of the Airedales will be a credit to those who were their caretakers in the past.

Greta Florence Brace Cup

Greta Florence bought her first Airedale Terrier in 1926 as a guard and house dog. The first Millswyn litter was born in 1930 and produced Ch. Millswyn Queen Bee and she was followed by a long line of Champions.

Over the years Mrs Florence took an active part in Airedale Terrier Club activities, she was always ready and willing to help new members. She was honoured with Life Membership of the ATCV in 1966 .

The Greta Florence Brace Cup was donated to the ATCV to be awarded for the Best Brace at our Championship Show in 1980.
