    2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Different materials are used in the making of aircraft seats to make them lightweight, strong and also fire resistant. The aircraft seat can be segmented into 5 main components starting from the structural frame which is generally made of aluminium or in some cases carbon composites are also used. Foam cushions, fire resistant (FR) textiles, upholsteries and plastic moldings together complete the modern aircraft seat. Each airline uses different material combinations for their seats based on the cost, durability and weight. Most airlines used contract manufacturers to install and customize the seats into their fleet with designers, testing and certification bodies also involved in the ecosystem. This market has been witnessing tremendous growth due to increasing number of aircrafts being commissioned from Boeing and Airbus by Airlines across geographic regions. IndustryARC estimates the global aircraft seats market to increase from around 232,185 in 2013 growing at a CAGR of around 7.3% during the forecast period. The highest growth is expected from the suite class segment of commercial aircrafts. Business class is also expected to increase at a CAGR of 8.8% as commercial airlines focus on business customer types to increase revenues along with getting high volumes in bookings from their LCC initiatives. Both strategies are needed to increase ASK for the airlines and for getting profits.

The global commercial aircraft seating market revenues are expected to increase from $3.3bn in 2012 to around $4.45bn in 2018.

    6. GLOBAL AIRCRAFT SEAT MATERIAL MARKET BY TYPES Aircraft Seat Material can be classified into different types based on the use case like seat structure, upholsteries, FR textiles, cushion foams and plastic molding. The seat structure is primarily made up of aluminium and followed by carbon composite, fiber glass and Kevlar in varying combinations.

FIGURE 12: AIRCRAFT SEAT MATERIAL MASS DISTRIBUTION ANALYSIS 2013 (%)

    Source: IndustryARC Analysis, Expert Insights

Aluminium is the primary aircraft material and it comprises of about 80% of an aircraft's unladen weight. Around 43% of the mass of a seat compared to other materials as shown in the figure above. Its combination of lightness, strength and workability makes it the ideal material for mass-produced commercial aircraft. Overall it helps save weight and increase fuel efficiency directly and indirectly sometimes by saving need for painting due to its anti-corrosion property. High-strength alloys like 7075 are generally used to strengthen aluminium aircraft structures. Polyurethane, Neoprene, Silicone and Polythelene are the different materials used for foam cushions in the aircraft seats. Fire resistant polyester, nylon, cotton and leather are primarily used as upholsteries covering the foam cushions and also as seat covers. The upholstery is put over the fire-blocking textile layer. Polycarbonate, ABS and decorative vinyls for plastic molding to prepare decorative closeouts, trim strips, food trays, and arm rests etc.

We also have extensive database of contacts which were used to conduct primary interviews and also to get their inputs using questionnaires. The following specific steps will be followed for the top-down approach as part of the triangulation efforts discussed above.

    1. The global airline industry is divided primarily into regional and international players. The data on the number and type of planes operated by each airline is then extracted. (More than 900 airlines in operation currently)

    2. The order status of new planes, number of planes to be retained and replaced is also collected.

    3. Based on the type of plane (RTA, NBA, WBA, VLA) and the airline customizations, the actual number of seats per class (Economy, Business, First, Suite) is determined. This is done for all the aircrafts owned by an airline.

    4. Based on data collected in second & third steps, the number of linefit and retrofit seats is determined.

    5. Our extensive database (more than 1,000 contacts) in the aerospace industry will be contacted by questionnaires and telephonic interviews to gather data and qualitative inputs on seat materials. These data points combined with the data in fourth step will be used to get the data on global airline seat materials market.
