AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL
PROJECTOR
Permission to reproduce an air traffic control projector developed at the Bureau of Standards by the Aeronautics Resea rch Division of the Department of Commerce, has been obtained hy Lights, Inc., of Los Angeles, California, which firm is now marketing these products.
This projector has alreadv been proven highly efficient and satisfactory through extended use at United Airport, Burbank, California. It weighs approximately 7 0 pounds, measures 15 inches in length by 80 inches in diameter, and is equipped with pistol grips for convenience in operating and steadiness in aiming.
The projector uses a 6-8-volt, 32-candlepower automobile headlight lamp of the single contact type.
A rotating holder carrying a clear green and a clear red lense is positioned between the lamp and the large reflector and is pivoted at its center. The projector is operated bv means of two operating triggers loc~ted in the pistol grip. The rear trigger when depressed energizes the lamp fillamen t and the front trigger flashes the desired signal. Sights are provided on top of the barrels which are so designed that the field of view as seen through them corresponds with the limits of the beam. This results in the beam being directed at a particular aircraft and permits the operator to know that no other aircraft is in range of the beam.
When in proper focus, a tight circular concentrated beam is projected of sufficient candle-power to reach any pilot whose plane can be seen by the operator sending the signals. Power consumption is negligible. Although each field has its own conditions to satisfy regarding signal codes the following code has been used very successfullv at United Airport: green light f;r takeoff; red light, to remain stationary; red and green flashes in succession to denote danger and to advise pilo.t to clear area immediately with caution. Bv partial depression of the signal trigger a neutral position can be obtained in which the projector indicates white light. Some operators use the white beam for spotting an object at conside ra ble distance at night and for obtaining approximate ceiling in ad verse weather.
Vic Kropff, big shot of the Vic Flying
service, has recently received a new Fairchild with speed landing gear, pants, and powered with a Menasco motor. Vic will probably be burning the atmosphere up plenty from now on.
