my laptop has wireless adapter atheros AR9285.

this wireless adapter works perfectly on my windows 7 however it seems not working in backtrack 5 maybe due to wrong setting as adapter for

    virtualbox.

basically backtrack 5 doesn't see any wireless adapter instead of that it set as eth2 my wireless adapter

    basically my settings are:

    host adapter 1

    attached to: Bridged Adapter

Name: atheros AR9285 Wireless Network adapter

i didn't change anything from Advanced (so everything is setup as Intel pro/1000MT destop (82540EM) - cable connected)

    network adapter is enable

Did you check the VirtualBox FAQ? Guess not . Better do that now.

Why should it seen as wlan?

For your VM exist no wlan-card.

For those of you too lazy to read (despite the 2 month wait for this answer):

VirtualBox doesn't read your wi-fi card as a wi-fi card. It reads it as a virtual lan. There is no way around this when using a VBox install.

    There are 2 solutions:

1.) Buy a USB wireless adapter for your Backtrack adventures.

    OR

2.) Install to your hard drive.

The second option is more complex and requires reading, so I'd recommend you go with the first.

2 months wait for an answer? The answer was given right away. But if people are dead lazy to read anything, it's their problem.

As I didn't find anything about wifi in the indicated FAQ, I would like to know why there isn't an emulated wifi card available in virtualbox ?

I use mainly Vbox for testing purpose and it's a bit ennoying to not be able to test wifi networking from a Vbox guest.

You have to learn what a VM is. I say nothing to this, because you will found 1000 of Articles via Google. Look in Wikipedia, read the FAQ and the

    manual. Its all described.

No no need to go partition installation and buy USB wireless Adapter. Just follow the below steps in your Virtual Box before starting Back Track.

Open Virtual Box -> Highlight Back Track OS -> Settings -> Network -> Adapter 1 or 2( desired) -> Make sure Enable network adapter check box

    is selected.

    Options should be:

    Attached To: Bridged Adapter

Name: Select your local Wifi adapter.

    Drop down the Advanced option.

Adapter type: Select the option based on the work station you have.

    Promiscuous Mode: Allow All

Cable connection check box should be checked in.

This is good but it only lets me use my WiFi as an ethernet connection. This means that it doesn't act like wifi so that I can perform wireless

Reading your first post I was tempted to just ignore you.

The only way to connect the guest to use true wifi is for it to be a USB wifi adapter.

Then you do not use the VBox network adapter and instead the USB wifi adapter.

I think that also possible to connect wifi by pci passthrough, but it's for linux host only.

Not easily. This requires VT-d from the processor (rare since it is so new) and even then it usually only works for graphics cards (when it works).
