Course Outline

Air and Noise Pollution Engineering 2-3-3 W ENE- 539Chapter 1 Introduction to Air Pollution: Composition and properties of atmosphere and pure air, Air pollution- definition and historical background, unit and measurements, Different types of sources and pollutant and their classification, Limit and standards.

Chapter 2 Effects of Air Pollution: Effect of dust, SPM, RPM, COx, NOx, SOx, Hydrocarbon etc. on human health, plants, animals and properties. Global Implications: Acid rain, green house effect, heat island, ozone depletion, fog etc.

Indoor Air pollution: Sources, impact and control measurement.Ambient & stack monitoring and laboratory measurement: of Dust, SPM, RPM, COx, NOx, SOx, and Hydrocarbons.

Chapter 3 Essential meteorology related to pollutant dispersion, wind rose, lapse rate & turbulence, wind shear, moisture humidity etc.

Air dispersion model: Eddy diffusion model, normal distribution model for point, line, area and volume sources, Plume and puff model, calculation of GLC & stack height. Development of air pollutant monitoring network.

Chapter 4 Air pollution control system for stationary and mobile sources. Principal of Air Pollution Control: self-purification, dilution, process modification etc. Working principal of different type of AP control instruments e.g. scrubber, collector, filter, ESP, catalytic converter etc.Chapter 5 Noise pollution, Concept of sound propagation, Basic physics and wave theory (octave and other spectra) of sound, measurement of sound r m s and sound pressure levels, Weighting networks A, B, C types, Effect of sound, Noise rating system, limit and standards for different zone and sources, Noise influence and mitigation for houses, transport, community, industrial and commercial sector.

Chapter 6 Soil pollution, composition, pollution sources, prevention, soil conditioning & Treatment

Discuss briefly about the ambient air indicating therein the composition of clean air

What are the broad air pollution categories

Define particulate matter, aerosol, fume, mist & soot
