Bump Testing and Calibration

We are all aware that calibration of a portable

gas monitors every month is a good idea to

maintain optimal accuracy but bump testing

seems to be the ‘Poor Cousin’. From a safety

point of view, more emphasis should be placed

on bump testing than calibration. Why? Two

major reasons:

1. Sensors can fail at any time BETWEEN

calibrations.

2. Because there have been safety recalls on

carbon monoxide and oxygen sensors in

the past and these sensors appeared fi ne

(and the oxygen ones calibrated) BUT they

didn’t respond to gas – very scary to witness!

We trust our LIVES to gas monitors and the

ONLY way to PROVE they are working is to

apply the appropriate gas to the sensor &

watch them respond on the display and see the

monitor go into alarm.

Designed for Use in the HVAC Industry

> The make-up air intake could be in the underground car park & may be drawing in elevated levels of carbon monoxide causing headaches to the buildings’ occupants.

> New fl ooring or furnishings may be off -gassing formaldehyde or other VOCs.

> Mould may be growing in wall spaces and

releasing spores & microbial VOCs.

Just looking at these parameters we are generally looking at three units to take measurements however we can use the EVM to measure CO2, RH%, temperature, CO & VOCs all in ONE unit; if we wanted to we could also measure air fl ow and real time dust while concurrently collecting a dust sample for later analysis…. A much easier solution.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Tech Notes

Traditionally IAQ monitoring has looked at temperature, relative humidity & carbon dioxide. This is great if you are a HVAC engineer and are only interested in balancing the make-up air fl ow to reduce costs BUT these parameters are only part of a good IAQ survey that a professional would undertake.

‘Sick Building Syndrome’ has been reported in the press from time to time and the causes are almost never to do with the standard three parameters. Many conditions can cause problems with IAQ – for example:

49Commonly used for obtaining disturbed samples at or near the surface and for boring to depths where samples may be obtained with a soil sampler or soil core sampler.

AMS augers are available in stainless

steel for EPA testing or carbon steel bits

with stainless steel cylinders for general

soil sampling and augering.

Perfect for augering shallow depths,

AMS soil augers can also auger deeper

depths and are generally limited by only

the time and muscle of the user.

> Most models available with

a threaded or Quick Connect

connection.

> A rounded bail for added torque

resistance.

> Stainless steel cylinder for easier

decontamination.

> Specially formed bits that dig and

cut through the soil at the same

time for easy penetration.

> Cut hole up to 1/4" larger than

the cylinder to minimize drag.

Split Soil Core Samplers

Designed to Collect Undisturbed Soil

Core Samples

Are essentially soil core samplers that have

been designed to retain samples from non-

cohesive materials – including: underwater

sediment in shallow lakes, streams, and

various types of impoundments. They can

be used to take undisturbed samples for

geotechnical analysis and are capable of

taking high-quality samples for chemical

analysis.

> Primarily used for shallow sampling,

they can be used up to 10'. in the

right conditions.

> Used with or without liners.

> Very portable and do not require extensive

mobilisation and demobilisation.

Has a vertically split cylinder (cup set) that

allows easy extraction of the soil core from

the liner and prevents breakage of the core.

Use it without a liner to collect undisturbed

cores for immediate fi eld examination and

testing, or it can be used with a liner for

collection of undisturbed, sealed cores.

The fl uoropolymer tubing may be used to

transfer the soil gas sample from the sampling

point to the surface. Cut a length to allow for the

maximum sampling depth plus 0.6–0.9m. Attach

one end to the sampling top and pass the other

end through the fi rst set of drive components.

When each GVP extension is driven to just above

the ground surface the drive head adapter is

removed, another GVP extension added, and the

drive head adapter is replaced before driving

again. To open either of the tips, pull back the

GVP extension to expose the tip extraction ports.

A hand vacuum pump, electric vacuum pump,

or electric vacuum station may be attached

to the upper end of the fl uoropolymer tube to

extract samples of soil gas and allow them to

be collected in a variety of specifi c procedures.

Alternatively most PID and FID hydrocarbon

detection instruments are provided with a

positive displacement pump that may be directly

connected to the fl uoropolymer tube to obtain a

direct reading of hydrocarbon concentration.

The extendable tile probe may be used to check

for underground obstructions. It may also be

useful as a pre-probing tool in non-caving soils,

before installing the probes.

AMS GVP kits may also be used to provide a

conduit for extracting groundwater samples.
