Head Coach Larry Friend

2011 Air Force Women’s Soccer 3 GoAirForceFalcons.com

Larry Friend enters his third season as headcoach of the United States Air Force Academywomen's soccer program. He is the second headcoach to lead the Falcons in their 18-year history.

Friend had the unenviable task of competing ina tough Mountain West Conference his first year in2009 with one of the youngest teams in the nation. The 2009 Falcons featured 12 freshmen and 11sophomores, and just three upperclassmen. Withthe lack of experienced players, the Falcons posteda 2-15-1 record. Sophomore forward Bridgett Mur-phy was one of AFA’s bright spots, earning her sec-ond All-Mountain West Conference honor.

The bumps and bruises of playing with such ayount team in 2009 paid off last year, as a more ex-perienced 2010 squad improved by six wins, to asuccussful 8-9-2 record, despite having no seniorson the team. The eight wins were the most since2001 and the program had its fewest losses ever inthe Div. I era. Air Force scored 21 goals on the sea-son, doubling the 10 goals scored in 2009. The Fal-con defense had a fantastic season, allowing 0.91goals per game and producing seven shutouts. The0.91 GAA average was the second-lowest in schoolhistory and the lowest since joining the MW.

Friend was an assistant at Air Force from 1992-1996 and 2002-2008. He started the women's soccerprogram with former head coach Marty Buckleywhile on active duty in 1992. In their second sea-son, the team broke into the top 20 of the NCAA Di-vision II weekly rankings. They continued toimprove each year with consistent top 20 NCAArankings. By the fourth season, the 1995 teamachieved a 14-3-2 record with an NCAA Division IIranking of seventh in the nation. They missed theNCAA championship round of eight by one slot, butproduced their first All American selection that sea-son.

In 1996, Friend helped Buckley and the Falconstransition from Division II to Division I. Theycoached the team to its first Division I tournamentappearance in the Western Athletic ConferenceChampionships. In 1997, Friend returned to his fly-ing career.

After 12 years as an assistant coach, Friendlooked forward to the challenge as head coach.Friend feels that the Air Force Academy women'ssoccer program has and will continue to produceofficers who are prepared to serve in the UnitedStates Air Force.

"Participating in a competitive team environ-ment provides our young women with the tools andlife lessons necessary to lead others in the AirForce," Friend said. "Many past graduates have goneon to lead as pilots, doctors, lawyers, in aircraftmaintenance, as general aides and numerous otherexciting careers in the Air Force."

The team has competed in the Mountain WestConference since 1999. The conference is nation-ally competitive and normally ranked in the top 10out of all NCAA Division I conferences. The Falconshave struggled to meet this competitive challenge, but Friend is looking towards changing that.

"The Academy is a tough environment that canbe taken advantage of only by individuals seekinga real challenge rewarded by incredible opportuni-ties," Friend said. "Our players are ready and excitedto expand their challenge to the soccer field."

Friend calls Columbia, Md., his hometown. Hisfather, Joseph F. Friend, moved the family to Co-lumbia in 1969 and retired from the Navy in 1971.Friend graduated from Wilde Lake High School in1980, where he was team captain of the soccerteam and a member of the 1976 state championshipteam. Friend went on to the Air Force Academy andplayed for coach Luis Sagastume as a four-yearstarter and team captain on the men's team. Histeams compiled a 46-24-7 record, during which timehe earned all-league honors four times and was se-lected to the all-midwest region team his junioryear. Friend is ranked third in the men's program forcareer assists and 20th for most points overall. Hewas selected by his teammates as Best Offensiveand Most Inspirational player in two different sea-sons.

Friend continued his soccer career after gradu-ating from the Academy in 1985 to include playingoverseas for the Japanese team Sukazan while onactive duty. He also competed for four years on theall-Air Force soccer team in the late 80s. He cap-tained the team twice during his playing career andled them to a pair of inter-service championships.Friend was selected to the United States All-ArmedForces Team all four years. He was selected teamcaptain of the U.S. Armed Forces team and led themto a 1990 North American Championship in Victoria,Canada. This victory qualified the U.S. for the 1991Military World Football Championship in Holland.

Friend ended his playing career after the Mili-tary World Championships in 1991 and moved on tothe coaching ranks. He received his United StatesSoccer Federation "A" license in 1994 and his Fed-eration Goalkeeper license in 2007. Friend hasworked with the state and region Olympic Devel-opment Programs since 1992. He has coached nu-merous competitive and developmental soccerteams in Colorado and Maryland. He has also beenan assistant coach with the Air Force Academymen's soccer program for two seasons under coachSagastume.

Friend retired from the Air Force in 2005 after 20years of service. He flew over 2,000 hours as an in-structor pilot on search and rescue and VIP heli-copters. Friend completed helicopter pilot trainingat Fort Rucker Army Post, Ala., in 1986 where he was

selected as "top stick" in both the contact and finalphase of training.

In 1987, Friend began a two-year tour at KadenaAir Base, Okinawa, Japan, as a combat search andrescue pilot with the 33rd Air Rescue Squadron. Hewas credited with two Joint Chiefs of Staff contin-gency (JCS) missions in the Philippines and one lifesaved in Japan.

In 1989, Friend was assigned to the 41st Air Res-cue Squadron at Patrick AFB, Fla., as an instructor pilotand NASA shuttle liaison officer. Friend flew numer-ous rescue support flights for space shuttle launchesand supplied navigation stations in the Bahamas. Hewas lauded for his efforts by the Secretary of Defenseon a highly sensitive JCS mission and credited with as-sist for a life saved off the coast of Florida.

In 1992, Friend had his first stint coaching soc-cer and instructing at the Air Force Academy. Friendwas honored with the Outstanding Military Educatorof the Year award in 1995. This is the highest awardthe Academy bestows on its instructors.

In 1997, Friend was assigned to the 1st Heli-copter Squadron at Andrews AFB, Md., to fly Bell UH-1 Hueys. His unit supported classified emergencyaction programs for the national capital region. Healso flew VIPs such as the President of Egypt andthe Vice President of the United States. He returnedto the Academy in 2001.

Friend earned a master's degree in sport ad-ministration from the University of Northern Col-orado in 1994. His professional military educationincludes Squadron Officer School in 1989 and AirCommand and Staff College in 1999.

Friend and his wife, Maribeth, have been mar-ried 22 years and have three children, Corey, Carina, and Felicia.

Expectations are higher than ever for Air Forcewomen’s soccer as it enters the 2011 season. With10 starters returning off the 2010 team that postedan 8-9-2 record, the program’s winningest teamsince 2001, Falcon women’s soccer is looking tocontinue its rise under third-year head coach LarryFriend.

After taking their lumps as freshmen andsophomores, where they saw just five wins com-bined during those two seasons, the senior classhelped lead the Falcons to the second-most wins inthe Div. I and Mountain West era last year. The sen-ior class of defenders Meagan Eissele and CassieWilson, midfielder Krystin Shanklin and forwardBridgett Murphy, feature three four-year starters andhave combined for 173 starts, making it one of themost experienced seniors classes in school history.

Backing the senior class is a talented juniorclass, led by forward Stephanie Patterson, AirForce’s leading point-scorer each of the last twoseasons.

Air Force’s sophomore class is anchored bygoalkeeper Kelly Stambaugh, who’s 0.98 goals-against-average was the second-lowest in schoolhistory.

The Falcons add 13 newcomers, including 11freshmen, to complement the 12 returners.

With the strong leadership and experience ofthe senior class, an up-and-coming junior and soph-omore group and the addition of another talentedfreshman crop, Air Force looks for this blend ofclasses to combine towards another successful sea-son.

Friend took some time from his busy presea-son schedule to talk a little about his team as it en-ters the 2011 season.

How has the success of 2010 helped as you getready for the 2011 season?I’m excited about the Falcons because of the qual-ity people who are involved in the program. Wewant to continue building on last year’s turnaround.

We won more games last fall than the three previ-ous fall seasons combined. We had the lowestgoals against average and the most shutouts in thehistory of our program at the Division I level. Thatis a testament to the hard work and dedication ourplayers and staff have put into making AFA soccersuccessful.

Our future looks promising. We have been workingon changing the culture of this program and feel weare on the right track. Our team chose three wordsto describe our new culture in the fall of 2010. Wewill carry our motto of “COMMITTED, RELENTLESS,UNITED” into 2011. We don’t accept anything belowour best effort. The entire team has been workinghard in the preseason and look forward to ourstrong effort carrying over into the season.

Tell us about the new coaching staff? We have some new coaches, staff members, andsupport people that are bringing positive energyeach day. Our new assistant coaches Kiha Sutta,Robin Grossman and Brian Lux are all working hardand pushing the players to a higher standard. Theybring a lot of experience to our coaching staff andit is a pleasure to work with them.

Tell us about your seniors? We have four great seniors who lead this team onand off the field. I expect the group of KrystinShanklin, Bridgett Murphy, Meagan Eissele andCassie Wilson to have a great season. Cassie andMeagan will anchor our defense. Krystin will holdthe midfield and Bridgett is always a threat up top.We will miss fellow senior Kelly Bieber this season. She chose to go onto an exchange semester inSpain and we wish her the best.

How is your junior class? Our returning juniors, Stephanie Patterson, ErynAvjian and Sophia Lockerby have taken ownershipin our vision and goals. Sophia, and Eryn will behelping our midfield and Stephanie, who has ledour team in scoring her first two years here, is look-ing to have a breakout year up top. Fellow juniorKim Koeppen has one year of eligibility left and haschosen to sit this year out. She will play her senioryear and finish with her classmates. She has electedto go on an exchange at West Point and we wishher the best.

How about the sophomores? Our sophomores finished a demanding freshmanyear and are ready for their second season. We lookfor Kelly Stambaugh to continue and build upon herdominant 2010 as our goalkeeper. Leah Bratt willadd to our midfield. Loren Catchpole and MeganDozier are both coming back from ACL injuries. Wehope to see them soon. Loren adds a defensivepresence for us and Megan is always dangerousaround the net. Kaleigh Moses will see time in thedefense and midfield. Ariel Saltin and Abigail Bunsjoined our team in the spring and provide addeddepth. Abby is a defender and Ariel is a composedplayer up top.

And how are the freshmen looking? We have a solid new class of freshmen. We expectsome to start right away and others will definitelysee time on the field. Our freshmen include HallieKoeppen (GK), Hannah Schwartz (GK), Kelsey Orvin(D), Rahni Giardina (D), Kylie Williamson (D),McKenna Fox (M), McKenna Kimball (M), Tori Gullo(M) and Felicia Sturgeon (M). In addition, we areexcited to see Casey Philbin (D) and Paige Saxton-Getty (D) return from injury as we approach confer-ence play.

The Mountain West

2011 Air Force Women’s Soccer 38 GoAirForceFalcons.com

On July 1, 1999, the Mountain West Conferencebegan official operations with a membership com-posed of eight Division I-A institutions. The Air Force Academy

2011 Air Force Women’s Soccer 39 GoAirForceFalcons.com

The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year program of instruction and experience de-signed to educate, train and inspire men andwomen to become officers of character, motivatedto lead the United States Air Force in service to ournation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of sci-ence degree and a commission as a second lieu-tenant in the Air Force.

COURSE OF STUDYCadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that

provides the knowledge, skills and responsibilitiesessential to a career Air Force officer. The entireUSAFA experience is integrated and mapped toachieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate.

The core academic curriculum includes coursesin basic sciences, engineering, social sciences andhumanities. Cadets take additional elective courses to complete re-quirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of thecadets complete majors in science and engineering; the remainder grad-uate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popularmajors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign areastudies, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, astronautical en-gineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics.

FACULTY COMPOSITIONThe majority of the Academy's faculty members, more than 500

total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-of-ficer volunteers who have established outstanding records of perform-ance and dedication. Each has at least a master's degree and more than55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their field ofstudy.

About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depthof disciplinary and educational expertise and provide academic stabil-ity and continuity.

Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an inte-gral part of their officer development. The Air Force Academy has beenranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved facultyfor four years in a row.

To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academyhas several distinguished visiting professors and endowed professorswho serve one or more years. Officers from other services, as well as of-ficers from allied countries are also members of the faculty. Distin-guished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise withthe cadets during the academic year.

ATHLETIC PROGRAMThe Academy's athletic program is designed to improve physical fit-

ness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve

its goals, the Academy offers some of the most ex-tensive physical education, intramural sports andintercollegiate athletic programs in the nation.Cadets take at least three different physical educa-tion courses each year.

MILITARY EDUCATION AND TRAININGAn air, space and cyberspace-oriented military ed-ucation, training and leadership program beginswith basic cadet training and continues through-out the four years. Seniors are responsible for theorganizational leadership of the cadet wing, whilejuniors and sophomores seek to develop team andinterpersonal leadership and instructional skills.Cadets are projected into as many active leadershiproles as possible to prepare them to be effective AirForce officers.

Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor,Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first sum-mer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the military rolein United States society as well as the mission and organization of theAir Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communication skills andjuniors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force.

The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and para-chuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets mayfly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team.

Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week trainingperiods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is re-quired to complete two training periods each summer with leave dur-ing the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadettraining in their first summer.

Combat survival training is a required three-week program duringcadets' second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options such as working with Airmen in an operationalunit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring orbasic free-fall parachute training.

During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership train-ing as supervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed above.

Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the educationprogram. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale andforensics are a few of the programs available.

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY

In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet theneeds of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other serviceacademies and recommended an Air Force Academy be established without delay.

In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, Pres-ident Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commis-sion narrowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near ColoradoSprings, Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property.

In July 1955, the first Academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficientlycompleted for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million.

Women entered the Academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

Dr. Hans J.Mueh is in hiseighth year asthe director ofathletics at theAir Force Acad-emy. A retiredAir Forcebrigadier gen-

eral, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for twoyears prior to his retirement from active dutyin the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavily in-volved in Academy athletics before becomingdirector of athletics. He was the Academy's fac-ulty athletics representative from 1996-2004and was a long-time member of the board ofdirectors for the Air Force Academy AthleticsAssociation.

Since becoming the director of athletics,Mueh has led the Academy to some remarkablefeats. In 2007, the Academy was one of onlythree schools (Michigan State and Boston Col-lege) to reach post-season play in football(2007), men’s basketball and ice hockey (2006-07). It marked the first time a service academyhas ever had a team compete in the post-seasonin all three sports.

In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’sbasketball team has played in another NCAAtournament and the National InvitationalTournament’s Final Four. The ice hockey teamhas won the conference championship and ad-vanced to the NCAA tournament four of thelast five years. Mueh was on the selection com-mittee that hired current head coach Frank Ser-ratore and led the Academy’s move into theAthletic Hockey Association.

The football program, the Academy’s flag-ship sport, has gone through a major overhaulunder Mueh. He led the transition from the re-tirement of the legendary Fisher DeBerry after23 years at the helm to hiring current headcoach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Academy gradu-ate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, leadingthe Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conferencein 2007. The Falcons qualified for their firstbowl game in five years, playing in the ArmedForces Bowl in 2007. The program then postedback-to-back eight-win seasons and was 9-4 lastyear while qualifying for bowl games everyyear. The school has averaged 9,000 bowl tick-ets sold during the four-year run.

Mueh has been just as successful behind thescenes with the administration of the depart-ment. Mueh restructured the department withan internal/external model that has stream-lined resources and made the department moreeffective from top to bottom. In addition, hehas the department on course to become a fed-erally chartered non-profit organization whichwill lead to more fund-raising opportunities.

Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA En-dowment and the announcement of the Hola-day Athletic Center, an indoor training facility.

The $15 million facility was completed in July2011.

Mueh has also been active within the con-ference and the NCAA. He was recently se-lected to be part of the NCAA Division IAmateurism Cabinet and has been active onthe NCAA’s academics/eligibility compliancecabinet, the men’s golf committee and the re-gion 7 postgraduate scholarship committee.Mueh has been equally active within the con-ference on various leadership committees. He iscurrently on the awards and recognition com-mittee and has previously served on the jointcouncil executive committee, and committeeson championships, television and sportsman-ship.

Before assuming his duties as vice dean atthe Academy, Mueh was permanent professorand head of the department of chemistry at theAcademy, a position he held since October1987 where he oversaw the annual design andinstruction of 25 undergraduate courses for1,500 cadets annually.

Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Ger-many, and emigrated to the United States in1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962 as amember of the Academy's eighth graduatingclass, and graduated with a bachelor of sciencedegree in chemistry in 1966. While at theAcademy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner insoccer as a goalie. He still holds the Academyrecord for saves in a game with 30, accom-plishing it twice in 1965 against North Car-olina and Benedictine. In his junior and senioryears, Mueh helped the Falcons to the RockyMountain Intercollegiate Soccer League cham-pionship and quarterfinal berths in the NCAAtournament. He was a first-team all-league se-lection in 1965.

Following graduation, Mueh completed twoassignments in intelligence before attendingthe University of Wisconsin where he earnedhis master's degree in chemistry in 1970. Helater earned a doctorate degree in chemistryfrom Wisconsin in 1976 as a distinguished

graduate. He has also completed Squadron Of-ficer School, Air Command and Staff Collegeand Air War College.

Between earning the two degrees, Mueh re-turned to the Academy as an instructor in thedepartment of chemistry from 1970-72. Healso served as assistant soccer coach and playedsemi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationalsin Denver during those two years, leading theInternationals to the Colorado state title in1971. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam andserved as an intelligence officer in Saigon, Re-public of Vietnam and at Nakhon PhanomRTAB, Thailand, in 1972 and 1973.

After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh re-turned to the Academy in 1976 as an associateprofessor of chemistry. He remained at theAcademy except for a stint in 1985-86 as thespecial assistant for technical matters at the De-fense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon.

Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive asthe Air Force Academy's.

The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical con-ditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for offi-cership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to buildcharacter. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program: inter-collegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education.

The intercollegiate program has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAA-sanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation.Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-coun-try, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. TheAcademy fields women's teams in basketball, cross-country, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soc-cer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAA programs; boxing and cheerleading.

The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs com-pete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Boise State,Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU, UNLV andWyoming. All sports also compete against non-conference opponents, including many nationally-ranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief'sTrophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 17 times, which is more than anyother academy. The winner of the annual rivalry visits the WhiteHouse to have the trophy presented by the President of the UnitedStates.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive build-ings in the country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seeminglyendless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396 feetby 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The struc-ture is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena andmultipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating capac-ity of more than 9,000.

Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacityof 2,470, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track andfield competitions.

The department’s newest facility, the Holaday Athletic Center (pic-tured left), was completed in July 2011.
