AA ii rr FFFF oo rr cc ee WW aa tt ee rr PPPP oo ll ooThe Air Force water polo team has compiled a 63-50 record

over the last four years under the direction of head coach Jeff Ehrlich. The Falcons have been ranked in the nation's Top 20 each of the pastfour seasons with 13th being their highest ranking. In 2002, Air Forcecompeted for the 15-team Western Water Polo Association champi-onship. The Falcons defeated Chaminade (Hawaii) 8-4 and lost tochampion UC San Diego, and then beat BYU-Hawaii 9-6 for the third-place trophy. Air Force finished the season 16-12 overall and ranked16th in the nation. The Falcons won ten of their last 12 games, losingonly to UC San Diego and Loyola Marymount, both of whom wereranked in the nation's top eight. According to Ehrlich, "You can playweak teams and look good or play strong teams and get good." TheFalcons once again had a very tough schedule in 2002.

Of Air Force's 12 losses last season, seven were to teamsranked in the nations top eight, two were to teams the Falcons defeatedlater in the season, and two were to the top teams in the East, includingEastern champion Queens College by a score of 8-6. Air Force hostedCal Baptist, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and George WashingtonUniversity in its "East Meets West" tournament and beat #15 CalBaptist, 8-7, to capture the championship trophy. Junior goalie, C2CBrandon Shroyer, was named tournament MVP while senior, C1C ChasHorn was named to the all-Tournament team.

"We were able to take 22 players on at least one trip last yearand gave our JV squad three games against some excellent club teams,"said Ehrlich. "Of our 22 players who had a chance to travel in 2002 welost Chas Horn and team captain, Lowell Wallace to graduation. Wehave nine seniors who will be in the mix this year with captain ScottButler returning for his senior year." Butler was the leading scorer as asophomore with 51 goals for the Falcons. This is promising for 2003.

Air Force looks to its nine seniors to lead the team this seasonand to its three co-captains, offensive specialist C1C Scott Butler, defensive specialist C1C Micah Peterson, and goalie C1C BrandonShroyer. This should make Air Force very solid down the middle of thepool. Shroyer had a banner season in 2002 with 242 saves, 42 steals, and 15 assists. He was selected to the WWPA All-Tournament team atthe conference championships. Butler, in addition to leading the 2001team in scoring, also led the team in steals with 42. Peterson was sec-ond in assists with 34 and led the team in steals with 44. Other seniorswho are looking to contribute to the team are goalie Kelly Greiner, KirkReimer, Mitch Adams, Chris Palmer, Eric Baber, and Vincent Urso.Greiner has traveled with the team on most trips during his career andhad a great spring season. Reimer started the majority of the 2002 sea-son and was third in scoring with 40 goals. Adams will help Petersonguard the opponents' top offensive player and also had a tremendousspring season. Palmer will help with the Air Force counter-attack withhis left hand and quickness. Baber is recovering from elbow surgery butwas a key starter on last year's team with his 46+ speed in the 100 yd.freestyle. He won the majority of the sprints and will be another key onthe fast break. Urso, after taking a year off, will help with his excellentoutside shooting.

The junior class will also see some good travel time as theFalcons have seven players competing for top spots. Goalie Jared Joneshad 30 saves in 2002 and is looking to challenge Shroyer for the start-ing position. Murphey Morgan, a 6'6 lefthander with blazing speed wasa starter in 2002 with 41 goals, 52 assists, 37 steals, and 14 preventedscores. Josh Jewett, the team's most improved player last year startedand contributed with 29 goals, 26 assists, 36 steals and led the team indrawn ejections with 34. Chris Nary saw substantial playing time in2002 and is looking to start this upcoming season. Nary is from Hawaiiand his father is the head coach at Chaminade. Eric Swenson from SanClemente, Calif. and Brian Woolley, from Fresno, will use their quick-ness to draw the needed ejections and score the quick goals. Matt"Beef" Herrera will be looking to challenge Peterson andAdams for the 2-meter defender position.

Leading the sophomore class will be Jeff Donaldson, JustinPerkins and lefthander Zach Carey out of Houston, Texas. Donaldsonand Perkins both had a chance to travel in 2002 and all three will becompeting with the 16 juniors and seniors for one of the coveted travel-ing spots.

The freshman class will be 11-strong and could be the bestclass to enter the Academy in the last five years. Top recruit BrianMcShane from Chicago has traveled with the U.S. National Youth Teamand with his size, 6'4, 200 lb, and speed, 52+ in the 100 backstroke, should break into the team's top 10 by the San Diego trip. DannyKimmich played for one of the top teams in the nation, the BishopsSchool of San Diego, and has also proved he can put the ball in thegoal. Kimmich and McShane were both high school All-Americans.Kimmich will also compete for a spot on the 2003 team. Other solidfreshmen include All-CIF player Kyle Schaefer out of University HighSchool, Oregon MVP Dan Guidoux, Matt LeBlanc out of Loyola HighSchool, Blake Pickell from Foothill High School, Matt Adams out ofOrlando, Fla., and Christian Blume from Chicago. Air Force had threesurprise walk-ons in Matt Duncan from Clovis West High School, ChrisNitzel from Baltimore, Md., and Adam Smith out of Dallas, Texas."Our goal is to give six freshmen at least one trip this upcoming seasonwith at least two on every trip," said Ehrlich.

On the coaching side, Capt. Brian Pendergast returns for hissecond year as assistant coach at Air Force after replacing Craig Ackleylast season. Pendergast is one of the best water polo players to play atthe Academy. As a senior he received the Athletic Excellence Award, was a two-time MVP, three-time NCAA All-American, U.S. OlympicFestival silver medalist in 1994, and U.S. Junior National team memberin 1995. Pendergast still plays at a very high level and is in the waterdaily transferring his knowledge to the players.

Craig Thomas, a 1997 AFA graduate and 1996 MVP in thegoal will be back as a goalie coach and will eventually take the assis-tant reigns from Pendergast when his tour ends at the Academy.Thomas is second in saves at the Academy to Walt Heidmous with over690 saves during his career. Pendergast is second in scoring to BenPhillips (1972-75) with 234 career goals.

With respect to facilities, the new Air Force water polo poolhas been refurbished to include the following: A new filtration system,a new gutter system level with the pool water and deck, a toe ledge 360degrees around the pool for easy exit, a new deck and pool tiles forbrighter color, eight-lane markers at the bottom of the pool and an AFlogo in the middle, bulkheads removed to give the team the full 20 x 40yard water surface all seven feet deep, stadium-quality fold down seat-ing, two refrigerated drinking fountains, pull-up and bar-dip bars forlandwork, 18 speakers mounted throughout the new ceiling tiles, upgraded "white" lighting to double the brightness, and finally a newventilation system that controls air temperature and humidity. Logoswill be placed on the west wall along with a banner for each of the 15teams in the Western Water Polo Association. "This will be a greatvenue for future competitions and camps," said Ehlrich.

The 2003 schedule includes a trip to Princeton to play fiveEastern schools ranked in the top 25 and at least five trips to Californiato play several top 10 schools. The highlight will be a trip to NorthernCalifornia to play Cal Berkeley, University of Pacific, UC Davis, andPrinceton. Air Force also has five teams attending the "East MeetsWest" tournament in late October. "Our parent, relative, and friend sup-port will once again be a big factor in our success this season," com-mented Ehrlich. "Our goal is to always have more fans then our homeopponents. Health, attitude, and work ethic will lead the 2003 team to aWWPA Championship and a NCAA berth."

The 2003 National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championship will be a four-team, single-elimination tournament (fourgames), with a losers’ bracket to determine places three and four. Automatic qualifiers will be provided by the Eastern Water PoloAssociation, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and the Western Water Polo Association. The remaining team will be selected at-large without geographical restrictions. The following criteria will be utilized (not necessarily in preferential order): won-lost recordversus teams selected or seeded above the team being considered; head-to-head competition; end-of-season results (strong or weakfinish); and results against common opponents. Once the teams are selected, the NCAA Men’s Water Polo Committee will seed thefour teams.
