As part of its environmental policy, Merak has designed and manufactured

an HVAC unit that uses the new, environmentally friendly refrigerant

HFO1234yf – putting the company one step ahead on the environmental

protection front.

Merak has always been committed to protecting theenvironment.Fromtheveryoutset,thecompanyhaslookedforalternativesolutionstohelpreduceglobalwarming and prevent depletion of the ozone layer.Reducing the power consumption and greenhousegas emissions of its products has always been a pri-ority. One example is the heat pump that was firstlydesignedandmanufactured by Merak in railway airconditioningsystemsin1981.

Now, following further research and developmentworkinthisfield,MerakpresentsitsfirstHVACunitusingtheHFO1234yfrefrigerant.Theuseofthisnewrefrigerant,whose global warming potential is much lower thanones in current use (4 compared with 1,300 for theR134a) represents a revolutionary change in airconditioningsystemsforrailwayvehicles.

A wide range of tests on the unit have been carriedout inMerak’sthermodynamic laboratory,withmorethansatisfactoryresults.

2006 EuropeanDirective2006/40/EC.Prohibitsmobileairconditioningsystems(MACs)fromusingfluorinatedgreenhousegases withaGlobalWarmingPotentialhigherthan150.Thisdirectiveappliestotheautomotivesector. Itwillbevalidwitheffectfrom01/01/2011fornewtypesofvehicles;andfrom01/01/2017forallnewvehicles.

July 2010 GeneralMotorsannouncesthatitwillintroducetheHFO1234yfrefrigerantinsomemodelsby2013.
