ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH ST. JOHNS, MICHIGAN

WE ARE ALL EVANGELIZERS (and whatever else is on Deacon Eric’s mind)

A couple of years ago my wife and I decided we were going to head to the upper Midwest of the country and visit such sites as Mt. Rushmore and Little Bighorn. Since that requires a trip across South Dakota, a couple people told us to make sure we stopped at Waldron as we crossed the state, but didn’t give a reason why. I checked several SD maps but couldn’t find such a town (or any similarly-named town) so I dismissed the idea of stopping there. But as we drove across South Da-kota, a series of billboards told us that what people wanted us to see was not a town, but a store. Those who have crossed SD know I’m referring to Wall Drug. It made its name by advertising free ice water to weary travelers, but now houses virtually anything an old-fashioned drug store traditionally sold - plus about ten thousand other items. It attracts up to 20 thousand people a day during the sum-mer. (By the way, the total population of Wall, SD as of 2018 was 876).

Wall Drug popped into my head yesterday as we weaved our way through Hor-rock’s Farm Market in Lansing (with our masks on) and I mentioned to my wife that this was Lansing’s equivalent of Wall Drug. It seems every time I go there I find anoth-er part to the building - fruits and vegetables here, draft beer room there, wine wing - straight ahead, candy store - turn left at the bananas and so on. It’s hard to tell if people came to a tavern and decided to grab a few apples on the way out or if they just desired an adult beverage while shopping. Not a judgment, just an observa-tion.

It seems nowadays that people are searching for something more than ever before, but searches in the aisles of the Horrocks’ and Wall Drugs of the world can only provide temporal satisfaction to its customers. Faithful Christians know that eternal satisfaction can only come through Jesus Christ. That’s why a recent survey by Arizona Christian University, specifically a question on the value of human life, caught me by surprise.

The survey showed that only 39 percent of Americans believe that human life is sacred. Surely Catholic responses would generate a much high number, right? No, tragically, Catholics surveyed didn’t fare much better, with only 43 per-cent saying they believed that each human’s life is sacred. (The group with the highest affirmative responses were Evangelicals and Born-Again Protestants at 60 percent). In my mind, this goes beyond disappointing, beyond sad, all the way to tragic.

I first heard this on Catholic radio last week and expected calls to the host of the show disputing the validity of the numbers. Instead I heard sad comments from callers that gave credence to the findings. The callers pointed out that the numbers do explain to some degree societal views on issues such as abortion and euthana-sia - i.e. if we don’t believe a human life is sacred, then it doesn’t matter if we termi-nate it in the womb or if we pull the plug on the elderly. Racism takes on a different perspective as well. When only four of ten people believe that life is sacred, the majority of Americans are really saying “no life matters.” The philosophy fits in well with a relativistic world view, as well, which, by denying any absolute Truth, places little value on a human life.

So those of us who do think life is sacred need to continue our prayer for all people. Poll numbers are not absolutes, of course. But these numbers do make a state-ment on our society - they tell us we need Jesus - now.

Being a registered parishioner makes

the process much easier when it is

time for baptisms, weddings, Faith For-

firmation sponsorship and even funer-

als. If you have not registered with

the Church, please fill out the form

below and put it in the collection bas-

Do you have any used Lighthouse Me-dia CD's that you are no longer using?

If you find the CD’s insightful, instruc-tive and inspiring please consider shar-ing them with young adults in our com-munity. Bring your used Lighthouse Me-dia CD’s to the Church office. Our parish will donate these making them available (for free) to the Lansing Area Young Adult Ministry. You can be a participant in our parish evangelization by sharing your CDs; we will pass them on with the hope that the faithful, as well as ‘seekers’ who listen to them, will grow deeper in their faith; and then, continue the sharing of the Good News!

Remembering the Parish After providing for families and loved ones, you may wish to include St. Joseph Parish in your Will. All gifts are welcome, and we ask that you prayerfully consider whether a portion of your estate should be used to continue the ministries of the Parish. This can be accomplished with the words: I bequeath to St. Joseph Parish of St. Johns, Michigan, [insert amount being given or percentage of residue] to be used to support the ministry of the parish. A bequest can be a specific dollar amount, a specific piece of property, a percentage of an estate, or all or part of the residue of an estate. It is always recommended that you consult a lawyer for drafting or amending a will.

Congratulations Graduating Seniors!

One of your responsibilities of being a young adult is to register with the Church. Once you turn 18, you are no longer on your parents registra-tion. By registering with the Church, you will help avoid issues when it comes time to prepare for your future wedding and the baptism of your children. Please take some time to fill out the form below, and either drop it in the collection basket, or mail it into the Church.

**Attention**

A change purse was left at the Church about 7 weeks ago. Please call the parish office if you are

missing your change purse.
