Volume 52, Number 10 • June 2019

RAMBLINGS, BUT KIND OF IMPORTANT, FROM THE RECTOR

The weeks since last I wrote a "Net" article have

been, without a doubt, the most chaotic and

overwhelming in all my years as your priest. I once

heard someone describe times like this as "being

attacked by a school of guppies!" I get that now.

There has been much to juggle, many decisions to

make and questions to answer, folks to worry about,

problems to attend to, and mistakes to be rectified.

If, in the process, I have forgotten something

important, gotten impatient or snippy with you, or

seemed distracted, please accept my apology.

One very important thing that occupied me was

transitioning from having Kelly Aughenbaugh as

our Curate to finding a new one. As you all know

by now, Kelly's last Sunday with us will be on June

16th. I hope you will attend liturgy that day to say

your proper farewell, or find a way to do so

individually. It has been a joy to share this ministry

with Kelly these three years. You, as a

congregation, have done a fantastic job helping her

grow into this crazy and wonderful new vocation

God has given her. Now, we send her on to new

places and people, fortified by our prayers and

witness. God bless you Kelly, as God has blessed

us by you!

Alas, I also have to share with you that I and the

Vestry made a difficult decision. Bishop

Hollingsworth shared with us just a couple of weeks

ago that he does not have the funds to help us

support a curate as he did the last three years.

When Kelly was ordained, he was funding just

Kelly. Now, those same funds are being divided

among 8 new deacons and priests. This is a

wonderful problem for our diocese, but not so much

for St. Peter's. Dan Lammers and I crunched

numbers, the Vestry carefully deliberated, and we

decided unanimously that it would not be prudent to

commit to the support of a new curate at this time.

Until the dust finally settles from our building

project, we cannot clearly project our financial

situation beyond the end of this year. So, sadly, we

had to decline the opportunity to bring Brian

Bechtel on board as our new curate.

Which means that, for the foreseeable future, I

will be the only priest serving St. Peter's. While

John Keller and Nancy Wittig may help out from

time to time, essentially I'll be pastoring solo.

Which means that all of you are going to need to

step it up a notch or two, or else balls will start to

drop and things begin to break. I am pretty

confident in my capacity effectively to handle the

load, especially because of our superb staff and lay

leadership, but we will need your increased

willingness to step forward to fill gaps. Things like

pastoral visiting, adult education, first Sunday

breakfasts, buildings and grounds care, liturgical

servers (acolytes, Eucharistic ministers, ushers,

chancel guild) and the Stewardship Committee all

need fresh volunteers. Please do not wait to be

asked. Contact the office or the Wardens and offer

yourself. Without your willingness to give of

yourselves, clergy burnout and parish stagnation are

a real possibility.

Finally, I cannot emphasize strongly enough how

important it is for all of you to be present for our

grand opening celebration on Pentecost Sunday,

June 9th. We have accomplished something

remarkable as a parish. It is important to celebrate.

Equally important, we built this facility in order to

make a statement: WE ARE HERE! AND WE

WILL CONTINUE TO BE HERE! AND WE

ARE HERE FOR YOU, OUR COMMUNITY!

Your physical and prayerful presence will be a

powerful witness to that commitment. We want to

demonstrate what we believe to be true; that St.

Peter's is a Christian community devoted to

welcoming all God's children. If you believe that,

and if you believe that is what we are about, then

you just have to be here that morning and

afternoon!

During the summer months we will continue to

adjust to our new facilities. We will imagine all the

ways we can use this new tool for ministry. And,

we will rest. Don't expect too much from me this

summer. I'm bushed, and I plan to take every

minute of my vacation and then a little. But, my

imagination will be moving along. I am so excited

to find what lies ahead. I hope you are too.

In this season of graduations and pollination and

increasing daylight and all the glories of spring

turning to summer, give thanks for the outrageous

blessings we enjoy as a congregation. You, the

people of St. Peter's, are the talk of Lakewood and

the talk of the Diocese of Ohio. Take pride in that,

and resolve to commit yourself anew to the work

God is doing here with you and through you.

Enjoy your summer. Rest up. Show up a

Sunday or two ☺ Then, be raring to go come

Labor Day as we enter a new era in the life of St.

Peter's.

Your Colleague in Christ,

Keith

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHEDULE

While many churches reduce their weekend

schedule in the summer, we expand ours!

Beginning June 15, we will resume our Saturday

evening celebrations of Holy Eucharist at 5:00 p.m..

This summer, we are going to hold that service in

our new "Chapel of the Confession of Saint Peter."

While I know some will be disappointed (the

sanctuary is so lovely in the late afternoon), it is a

simple matter of stewardship. The sanctuary is

almost impossible to cool on a hot summer

afternoon. Running the air conditioning for thirteen

hours in the heat of the day to get the indoor

temperature to 78 degrees for 20 people, I think you

will agree, is a pretty wretched stewardship of

resources. Our new Chapel, on the other hand, can

be cooled down in an hour to an almost absurd chill.

On really nice evenings, we may even have the

Saturday service outdoors on the plaza! It is a

summer to experiment! Come check it out!

Sunday morning worship will be pretty much as

usual. There will be no music at 8:00 a.m..

Michelle and team will again offer a fun and

relaxed "Summer Sunday School" at 9:00 a.m.

Fellowship after services will take place outdoors,

weather permitting, on the plaza. The Wednesday

Eucharist and Bible Study will go on summer hiatus

from June 26 until September 4.

OLD SPACES, NEW SPACES AND NEW PHRASES

So, what are we going to call all these new spaces

we have at our disposal? Let me give you a tour!

We'll begin upstairs and move down!

Second Level: In addition to all staff offices you'll

find:

Office Lounge: When you come up to the

offices (all on the 2nd floor), you enter by

stairway or elevator into a lovely small lounge

with a kitchenette. This is for small meetings,

small adult gatherings, Bible Study and visiting.

Office Conference Room: Adjacent to the

lounge is a small board-room type space for

committee meetings and classes for up to 10

people.

Sanctuary Level: The south elevation from the

parking lot is Level 1R, with either the elevator

(left) or the hallway (right) raising you to Level

1, the sanctuary floor level.

St. Peter's Childcare Center: Upon entrance at

1R, secured doors are straight ahead. On

Sundays these doors are open. On weekdays,

you will need a code or use the doorbell to enter.

Elevator Pass-through/Clergy Vesting: The

elevator opens (on floor 1) into a small ante-

chamber which leads directly into the renovated

clergy vesting room, and from thence into the

sanctuary. This is the principal means of access

to the sanctuary for folks with mobility

challenges. This room is also accessible via a

small stairway and door from the hallway.

The Garth: As you process north in the

hallway, the Garth and east side of the church

reveal themselves to you on your left. The Garth

is a garden for conversation or prayer.

The Oratory of the Nativity: Formerly known

as "The Chapel," this will continue as the

location of Wednesday Eucharist, very small

worship services and some adult education

activities.

Page 3: aint eter’s piscopal hurch • akewood, hio Volume 52 ...€¦ · Beginning June 15, we will resume our Saturday evening celebrations of Holy Eucharist at 5:00 p.m.. This summer,

The Prayer Nook: The northeast corner of the

sanctuary where once stood the baptismal font.

A pew (dedicated to Veterans), prayer desk and

votive candle stand will occupy the space. It is

for quiet prayer, or to nurse a baby.

The Baptistery: The baptismal font is now in

its traditionally and liturgically proper location.

The area around the baptistery will be a place for

quiet conversation, greeting visitors and

placement of information tables.

The Vestibule: The new entrance to the

sanctuary connects to the Narthex. This is where

processions will form.

The Narthex: A "narthex" is an ante-room to a

worship space. In our case, the Narthex is the

glass-walled gathering space between the Chapel

of the Confession and the sanctuary.

The Plaza: Exit from the Narthex by stairs or

the handicapped ramp to reach the Plaza. This

will be a place for warm weather gatherings,

perhaps some live music, and just resting.

The Chapel of the Confession of Saint Peter:

A large icon of the story of Peter's confession of

Jesus as the Christ will dominate the eastern wall

of this room. An altar and retables will be

beneath the icon. This sacred furniture will set

the tone of the room, which can otherwise be

used for virtually any purpose. 50 wood and

upholstery stowable chairs will make the space

appropriate for weddings, funerals, meetings,

classes, seminars, you name it!

Undercroft Level: The Undercroft level is

accessed by the elevator, by stairs at the south

end of the hallway, from the narthex and from

the southwest church entrance (old handicapped

ramp).

North Basement: Accessed from narthex,

consists of storage spaces and mechanical rooms.

South Basement: Accessed at south end of

hallway, just inside parking lot entrance, consists

of storage and mechanical rooms.

Undercroft Restrooms: The Undercroft

restrooms will be fully renovated and made

handicapped accessible.

Undercroft Lounge: The southwest quarter of the

Undercroft has been made into a simple, informal

multi-purpose lounge area for meetings, classes and

youth group activities

Happy Father’s Day

St. Peter’s would like to extend a Father’s Day

greeting to all fathers and grandfathers. Thank you

for your support and unending love.

With Gratitude to St. Peter’s Choir

As we conclude another season of singing for our

Choir, it is so fitting to offer thanks to each one of

these parishioners who give of their time and talents

for this ministry. As we look forward to the Choir’s

return in the September, we will again need to add

more parishioners to our roster in order to ensure

that music will continue to be a vital and inspiring

part of our Sunday worship.

Please pray for this ministry and consider

offering your own voice to our song.

Thanks again to each one of you who has given

their time to make possible the Choir of St. Peter’s

Church.

number, mobile phone, etc… or would like to add

Altar Flowers

Worship in our church is an experience

of beauty. Every element of the

service—the architecture, the altar

hangings, the music, the people in the

pews, and more—draws us closer to

God by inviting us to bring our very

best and laying it upon the altar. The flowers that

bedeck that altar are an important and beautiful

symbol of what we offer to God in our worship.

Altar Flowers have an added dimension to the

worship… not only do they create beauty, they are

then given to shut-ins, folks celebrating momentous

occasions and special events, or just someone who

needs a “pick-me-up!” Every member of the parish

is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship

by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday to

the glory of God and in memory, thanksgiving, or

celebration for people or events that are important.

St. Peter’s has quite a number of Sundays

available throughout the year for you to place

flowers at the altar. If you would like to make a gift

of altar flowers, you may do so by contacting the

office at 216-226-1772. Seasonal flower

arrangements are $50. Call or stop by the office to

reserve a date. (Flowers are not on the altar during

the Lenten Season.) Thank you in advance for your

generosity and for contributing to the beauty of our

worship

make the desserts for the Community Meal taking

place this same evening.

Vacation Bible School

Monday, June 10 through

Friday, June 14, 2019 One

small step for your

kids...one giant leap for

God's Kingdom!

Blast off with the first

VBS to land on Mars!

Cokesbury's To Mars and

Beyond will help our kids discover the wonders of

God's universe. We'll become Voyagers on a

journey through space, exploring where God's

power can take us.

From an outpost on Mars we'll lift off to distant

planets on special missions to collect power

sources. Along the way, we'll learn how God

walked with heroes of the Bible, and that God is

always with us, too. Adding to this adventure is out-

of-this-world fun, learning, and timeless Bible

stories that inspire our kids to give glory to God.

Our God is able to do far beyond all that we could

ask or imagine!

Page 5: aint eter’s piscopal hurch • akewood, hio Volume 52 ...€¦ · Beginning June 15, we will resume our Saturday evening celebrations of Holy Eucharist at 5:00 p.m.. This summer,

from our Curate…

Have you

experienced God’s

love and presence

in your life

recently? Take a

moment to think

about what you’ve

seen, heard, or

been a part of. These were some words from one of my earliest

Fisherman’s Net articles that I wrote. This is my last

Fisherman’s Net article, and it is weird to write it

and though I want to share profound insights about

my time with you and to write it elegantly, I’m

afraid that instead it is short and simple.

Other words from that early Net article seemed

fitting to have in my last article too. I also wrote

this:

These examples remind me of God’s love

and presence. A smile from someone I

walked past on the sidewalk, a meaningful

conversation and connection with a

parishioner… and looking around my

apartment and seeing an eclectic mix of

items from family, friends and St. Peter’s. You all, the St. Peter’s family, have been a way

that I experience God’s presence and love. That has

stuck with me since early on in my time serving

with you. (I also still use those items you gave me-

kitchen utensils and dishes, a couch, a chair, and a

t.v. Thank you!)

When we live and do life in community, love

and forgive each other, work for justice, and we

open up to each other in conversations, sharing

experiences, and sharing food and drink, then we

are living into the way of Jesus. God is present

always and everywhere, but I’ve encountered or

sensed God through these meetings and times

together.

St. Peter’s will always have a special place in my

heart because you have taught and helped form me

into the person and priest I am still becoming! Your

warmth in welcome, invitations to be a part of your

life events, and your support and caring all have

impacted me in ways that I hope to share with

others. Thank you!

One last thing I wrote in that early Net article

was, keep your senses and heart open and

looking for God. Remind others, encourage

them and be a vessel of the Spirit’s

outpouring of love, kindness and mercy to

those you encounter. And you, St. Peter’s with

the help of God, have shown me how to live into

these words. May we all keep working and showing

love to our neighbor every day, because God first

loved us.

With a grateful heart.

~ Kelly

be a great day for

the parish & the

community. The

day will begin

with a festive

celebration of the

Holy Eucharist at

10:00 a.m.. During

the service we will specifically recognize and thank

all the men and women who designed and built this

facility for us. The celebration will continue with a

picnic on the grounds, during which tours of the

new building will be given every 15 minutes.

The grills will be fired up at 11:30 and continue

until 2:45. At 3:00 p.m., Bishop Mark

Hollingsworth, Jr., will join us for a brief ceremony

and building dedication. After the dedication

concludes, building tours will continue until

approximately 4:30 p.m.

To celebrate the public opening of our new

building, we are inviting the entire community to

come and see. We will also have our annual parish

picnic this year on the grounds and invite our

honored guests to join in. We need all hands on

deck to make it a success. We will place cards in the

pews to help us plan for picnic food and volunteers.

Sarah Taylor is point on our picnic so if you would

like to offer to help please indicate on the pew cards

or contact her at [email protected]. Fill

out the card letting us know what side dish you will

bring and drop the card in the collection plate.

A Missionary’s Prayer (I Will Go and Do)

Words and Music by Janice Kapp Perry

Father, I hear thy call,

I turn my thoughts to thee, forsaking all;

Recalling promises we all must keep.

I put my hand in thine and go to feed thy sheep.

Lead me to those who seek,

and give me faith and strength to boldly speak.

In humble dignity I will proclaim,

that men may come to know and love thy holy

name.

If there be trials, Lord, to help me grow,

If thou wilt guide me I will conquer, this I know!

I will go and do the things which the Lord

commandeth,

for I know that He giveth no commands to His

children,

except He prepare a way, except He prepare a

way.

Father, I clearly see that ev’ry lasting joy has come

from thee.

Help me to serve thee well and thus repay,

Thy loving kindness I receive from day to day.

Knowing that thou art near, and I may seek thy help

through daily prayer.

I’ll walk in confidence that I will see thy Spirit

touch the lives of seeking men through me.

If there be trials, Lord, to help me grow,

If thou wilt guide me I will conquer, this I know!

I will go and do the things which the Lord

commandeth,

for I know that He giveth no commands to His

children,

except He prepare a way, except He prepare a

way.
