• cause: cutting down trees to sell the lumber and clear the land for farming. Effect: depletes the world’s oxygen supply, prevents finding medicines, creates endangered species. Solution: reforestation. Earth Day Summit.

1. Overpopulation

• cause: China- Mao told people to have many children. Prefer to have sons rather than daughters- Confucius. Farming- more people to help on the farm. Solution- One Child Policy- Deng- human rights violation.

• North Africa, Sahara. Cause: Overgrazing of cattle. Cattle has eaten all the vegetation. The Sahara is gradually spreading. Effect- drought, famine. Solution- reforestation, fence off land.

• wife and mother, subordinate- inferior to men.

• Less education, own less property.

• settle international disputes

• protect human right

• keep peace.

• A. Marx- basis for Communism (Marxism)- classless society, everybody is equal. • B. Smith- laissez faire capitalism- government

keeps its hands off.

6. Interdependence

• Interdependence- countries depend upon each other.

• Example- Japan depends upon the Middle East for oil.

• Urbanization- move from the country to the city. People go to the cities looking for jobs. Effects- overcrowding, pollution, weakens traditional values.

8. Green Revolution

• Green Revolution- meant to increase agricultural output. Introduced new technology (high yielding seeds and chemical fertilizers) onto the farms. Unsuccessful- too expensive.

9. GNP

• GNP- Gross National Product- how much goods and services are being produced. Indicator of how well or poorly and economy is doing.

10. Infant Mortality

• Infant mortality- the number of babies that die at birth. Life Expectancy- the average age that someone will live until. Indicator of healthcare in a country.
