Aim: How can the nervous system malfunction?
Nervous System Malfunctions
• Polio
• Cerebral Palsy
• Meningitis
• Stroke
• Alzheimer's Disease
Can you identify these parts?
How have we learned about what each part of the brain controls?
1. Which part of the brain is essential to maintain life?
2. Which part is in charge of you getting 100 on a test?
3. Which part is in charge of balancing your body when you dance?
Disorders of the brain, have helped scientists identify the
functions of the parts.
Polio
• What causes it?: Virus
• What is it?: attacks motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and causes paralysis.
• TREATMENT: Vaccine
Franklin Roosevelt (1921)
Iron Lung• The iron lung was used to help people paralyzed by
polio breathe. Pressure changes in the chamber performed the job of the diaphragm and caused inhalation and exhalation. (Remember how we breathe?)
Cerebral Palsy
• What causes it: It usually results from injury or disease to the mother during pregnancy.
• What is it?: Damage to muscle and speech centers of the brain at or shortly after birth.
• TREATEMENT: Experimental Drugs
Meningitis
Meningitis• What causes it?: bacterial or viral infection
• What is it? Inflammation of the membrane around the brain & spinal cord causing vomiting, headache, confusion, stiffness of neck.
TREATMENT:
Antibiotics (can be fatal)
Stroke• What causes it?: Bursting of a blood vessel
or clot blocking Oxygen flow to the brain
• What is it?: death of brain tissue which may cause paralysis, memory loss, or death
TREATMENT:
Reduce Blood pressure
Exercise
Alzheimer's Disease• What causes it?: genetics or environment
• What is it?: Destruction of brain cells leading to loss of memory, judgment, speech, coordination.
TREATMENT:
