This might be your rst time in Africa, it might not be, but probably this is your rst time in

PORT HARCOURT.

The LOCAL COMMITTEE is so excited to meet you and is ready to help you out during your stay.

We hope that you will have an awesome experience in our country because we are ready to give

Orientation

The Continent of AfricaAfrica is the second largest continent in the world. With an area of nearly 31 million square kilometers

(islands included), it contains one-quarter of the total land area of the world and is two-thirds the

size of the biggest continent, Asia. Pretty big, right?

Africa stretches a distance of 1000 km east to west at its widest point along latitude 10~N, and

8000 km north to south, from the Mediterranean to Cape Agulhas along latitude 20~E. Now don't tell

me you don't know a little Geography!

Apart from the extreme north and south, the rest of Africa has tropical climate with temperatures

above 20~C all the year round. Consequently, seasons are determined by rainfall.

Africa, as at the year 2000, had a population 815 million people, based on data from Population

Reference Bureau, Inc., which is rapidly increasing.

Africa is blessed with vast deposits of a large variety of minerals which includes tin, gold, coal,

diamonds, petroleum, copper, phosphates and manganese. These are found in the countries:

Uganda, Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Mauritania, Zimbabwe, Zaire, Zambia, Namibia, Morocco,

Niger, Botswana, Angola, Congo, Rwanda, Cameroon, Tunisia, and Libya. I thought we would never

stop.

The Land, the People, the Culture. NIGERIA

Nigeria, is a country located on the western coast of Africa. Nigeria has a diverse geography, with climates ranging from arid to humid equatorial.

Hundreds of languages are spoken in the country, including Yoruba, Igbo, Fulani,Hausa, Edo, Ibibio, Tiv, and English.

The country has abundant natural resources, notably large deposits of petroleum and natural gas.

The national capital is Abuja, in the Federal Capital Territory, which was created by decree in 1976. Lagos, the former capital, retains its standing as the country's leading commercial and industrial city.

Modern Nigeria dates from 1914, when the British Protectorates of Nor thern and Southern Nigeria were joined. The country became independent on Oct. 1, 1960, and in 1963 adopted a republican constitution but elected to stay a member of the Commonwealth.

Nigeria is bordered to the nor th by Niger, to the east by Chad and Cameroon, to the south by the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by Benin.

The major drainage areas in Nigeria are the Niger-Benue basin, the Lake Chad basin, and the Gulf of Guinea basin. The Niger River, for which the country is named, and the Benue, its largest tributary, are the principal rivers.

The Niger has many rapids and water falls, but the Benue is not interrupted by either and is navigable throughout its length, except during the dry season. Rivers draining the area nor th of the Niger-Benue trough include the Sokoto, the Kaduna, the Gongola, and the rivers draining into Lake Chad. The coastal areas are drained by shor t rivers that f low into the Gulf of Guinea. River basin development projects have created many large man-made lakes, including Lake Kainji on the Niger and Lake Bakolori on the Rima River.

The Niger delta is a vast low-lying region through which the waters of the Niger River drain into the Gulf of Guinea. Characteristic landforms in this region include oxbow lakes, river meander belts, and prominent levees. Large freshwater swamps give way to brackish mangrove thickets near the seacoast.

Nigeria has a tropical climate with variable rainy and dry seasons, depending on location. It is hot and wet most of the year in the southeast but dry in the southwest and far ther inland. A savanna climate, with marked wet and dry seasons, prevails in the nor th and west, while a steppe climate with lit tle precipitation is found in the far nor th.In general, the length of the rainy season decreases from south to nor th. 07

Rivers State, Port Harcourt

Rivers state, one of Nigeria's 36 states was created from the eastern region of Nigeria in 1967. The

territory had once been referred to as OIL PROTECTORATE, a name derived from its central role in

oil trades of the last two centuries.

The strategic importance of Rivers state in the economic equation of Nigeria earned it the name,

TREASURE BASE OF THE NATION. PORT HARCOURT, the state capital, is known all over the world as

the GARDEN CITY, because of its beautiful layout and decent and decent environment.

Port Harcourt is indeed one of the fast growing metropolitan cities in Africa.

Geography

The state is bounded on the south by the Atlantic ocean, on the north by Anambra, Imo and Abia

states, the East by Akwa Ibom state and west by Bayelsa and Delta states. Rivers state, which is in

the Niger Delta, has topography of at plains with a network of rivers and tributaries.

Besides oil and gas, Rivers state is blessed with many natural resources including timber, white sand

beaches, clay for ceramics, (ash, yellow, and red) etc, all yearning for exploitation.

People

The state has a population of about 5.6 million people who have a rich and unique cultural

heritage. Usually known to be friendly and hospitable, these people come various ethnic

nationalities namely, Abua, Andoni, Andoni, Ekpeye, Engenni, Etche, Ogoni, Ikwerre, kalabari,

Ndoni, Okrika, etc. These ethnic groups have existed together for centuries, long before the

creation of the state and are currently distributed in twenty three local government areas.

EconomyPort Harcourt's primary airport is the Port Harcourt International Airport located at Omagwa in the

periphery of the city.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) base is the location of the only other airport in the city; used by

commercial airlines Aero Contractors and Arik Air for domestic ights.

There are two main educational establishments in the city, namely; The University of Port Harcourt

and Rivers State University of Science And Technology.

The city is a major industrial centre as it has a large number of multinational rms as well as other

industrial concerns, particularly business related to the petroleum industry. It is the chief oil-rening

city in Nigeria. Rivers State is one of the wealthiest states in Nigeria in terms of gross domestic

product and foreign exchange revenue from the oil industry, crude oil being its main export earner.

The City has two seaports (FOT Onne, Port Harcourt Wharf), two stadiums (Sharks Stadium which is

the civic center) and Liberation Stadium located in Elekahia and two reneries.

Port Harcourt is the garden city of Nigeria. The hub oil activities in the Niger Delta which accounts

for about 90% of the national revenue. Due to the international nature of the activities there,

environment with good access for transportation and nearness to local market and church.

The Accommodation cost 50 USD for the entire Stay.

Pick-up

Interns face a great deal of uncertainty with their internship, going to a new place and meeting

new people. AIESEC Port Harcourt recognizes their rst few days are the most crucial, which is why

such emphasis has been placed on such details as home-stay and pick-up.

· One EB Member and the Reception Team will meet you at the Airport.

· You will be transported to the LC house where you will meet with more members of the LC.

· You will be solely responsible for the cab fare from the Airport to the LC House; the fare for the

cab is 2,500 Naira, which is 15USD.

· A reception/welcome party will be organized for you, this could either take place on the day of

arrival or a further date

IntegrationIntegration will happen on an on-going basis as there are so many things that an intern can

experience in Port Harcourt. Integration activities can be organized at weekly intervals and can

include places like parks, bars, and trips within the city, etc. Orientation will happen in the rst

week of your arrival of to ensure that you are self-sufcient as soon as possible.

· You will be given orientation to basic places, prices of things that you will be using and the fares

for the places you will be visiting during your stay in Port Harcourt. You will get a chance to learn

how to take a cab, how the water works, how the gas and other basic things are operated.

· You will be shown to way to your place of work and it is advised that you write down the

directions on how to get there, and how to get to the LC house. Etc.

· On your rst few days of going to work, an AIESEC'er will accompany you and ensure you get

oriented there as well.

· Members of the LC will play a huge role during the course of your Internship, you will get support

and the opportunity to make friends with members of the LC, so you will rely less on externals for

support.

· You will be required to take anti-malaria treatment; this is basically precautionary /preventive.

The price for the recommended malaria drug (Coarltem) is 1800 Naira which is 12USD.

· You will be shown the city…..as your perspective will be different from that of a Nigerian.

· Ideas on how to be involved with AIESEC activities will be brought up and shared with you.

NOTE:

Members of the Reception team will visit the house every week to ensure that all logistics are

taken care.

This would also ensure that there is someone to help the interns gure out how to x problems. We

would keep track with your movements in and out of the house so that we can plan the LC house

accordingly and also communicate problems before they arise.

Obudu Cattle Ranch

Located in Cross River State towardsthe Nigerian-Cameroun border in theSouth-East, the ranch is over 1,524m and has a temperate weather conditionto ensure good vegetation and grazing for cattle round the year.

Igbo-Ukwu is an ancient town popular for itsbronze artifacts. They were firs discovered by British Archaeologist Thurstan Shaw. The bronze date back to the 9th century.

Erin Ijesa Waterfalls

Located in Osun State, it is a natural waterfall arena amidst high rocks which has seven levels with different waterfall levels.

Nok Village

Oguta Lake Holiday Park

The holiday complex is a lake of fresh water and is the second largest of its kind in the country after the Lake Chad. the complex houses a golf course, recreational park, and the Natural confluence of OgutaLake and Urashi River.

Arochukwu Long Juju Shrine

This famous shrine is located in a cave. The cave is believed to hold the long metal pipe with which the gods speak to the people.

The home of the oldest form of civilization found on African soil, the Nok culture still exists today, and possesses in no small measure, the art and beauty of its over 2,500 years past.

Afi Drill Monkey Rehab

This is on Ndidem Iso road, hidden behind the Jahas Guest House. It was set-up by two over landers from the USA(Peter Jenkins and Liza Gadsby) who were biologists back home but were persuaded by the Nigerian government to stay in Nigeria and look afterthe endangered Drill Monkeys in the Afi Mountain range that borders Cameroun.

Marina Resort

The Marina Resort is one of the most fascinatingdestinations in Calabar. The resort is home to buildings dating back to the colonial era.

Calabar Museum

The Museum concentrates on the history of Calabar, the region and slavery. It has a large quantity of original documents relating to Nigeria. On the hill overlooking the waterfront, in the Old Government House, stands the former residence of the colonial governor. The house was built in Glasgow and shipped over in pieces.

Duke Town Church

This is one of the oldest Churches in Nigeria. It was established by the Presbyterian Church missionaries.The Great Mary Slessor’s grave is just a few minutes walk from the Church
