DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

We are just over halfway through Term 2 and our students have been extremely busy. Most year levels have been involved in an incursion or excursion in the past few weeks, or have one coming up. A reminder as well that Assessment and Examination periods start soon. Students should be preparing for exams and assessments with their completion of homework, study of required areas and ensuring they are at school every day.

You can read all types of research that will tell you how to identify a successful school; however the best ‘litmus test’ is the response of the children, teachers and parents. We have had an extremely smooth first half of the school year, even though there have been some changes to school leadership. Change is a normal process in schools and the important part is ensuring we are all working together for the students at the school.

AICS is fortunate to have dedicated teaching and support staff who spend many hours ensuring that we have ‘hassle-free’ school days and credit must also go to the children who ensure they come to school regularly, settle quickly and work industriously. It is a delight to have many positive comments about the school and how well AICS students perform.

Schools are dynamic ‘people organisations’ and as a school community we all have a vested interest in the well-being of the school. The working relationship between the home and the school is a vital link, ensuring a positive and productive education for every child.

As school leaders, our number one priority is the happiness and safety of every child. Children who are feeling happy and safe are receptive learners. If you have concerns about your child, please contact us, as ‘problems’ are far more easily attended to now than if they are left for weeks on end.

We are only too aware that at times parents tend to think their concerns are trivial and you debate with yourself whether you should contact the school. Our response is that nothing is too trivial when it comes to the education of your child. So if you have concerns or want clarification, please contact us. Please however, consider the following points:

A teacher’s number one priority is teaching the children and therefore if you arrive unannounced just before instruction time or during the school day, it will not convenient or possible to release them from teaching duties to speak to you. It is always best to arrange a meeting time.

If you want to meet with executive staff, it is best to make an appointment as they can have a number of commitments throughout the day and are not always available.

Parents should make an appointment with staff in the following order (note that an appointment MUST be made in all cases):

For matters of teaching of Arabic, Qur’an or Islam, parents should make an appointment with Dr Tariq Syed.

Reading at home

Reading is an important skill which is developed through experiences with a wide variety of texts. This includes reading books and magazines, posters and charts, pamphlets and packets, letters and postcards. It also includes viewing multimedia texts such as movies and documentaries.

Children make progress at their own pace; some pick up new skills quickly and some need more time for learning and practising the new skill. All children need to be ready to learn and to have the best conditions for learning new skills. At school, teachers create safe, happy and stimulating environments where children are encouraged and praised for ‘having a go’.

You can create a similar learning environment at home with the following ideas:

Make a regular time to read together and don’t stop reading TO your child when they can read themselves; they love listening to a competent reader.

When you introduce a new book to your child, discuss what it could be about, talk about the pictures or text and then read it to each other. With older children you can encourage them to make predictions and pause occasionally to confirm or reject their original thoughts.

Read and follow directions together such as when making a recipe or instructions for playing a game or assembling a new piece of furniture or toy.

Read magazines and newspapers together and talk about the pictures as well as the text.

Listen to audio books or story tapes and watch movies together. Once you’ve seen the movie, discuss it and then read the original book together.

Most importantly…..make sure your children see you enjoying reading.

Exiting the school at the end of the day.

Parents, please remind your children of the importance of crossing roads safely after school. There is a supervised crossing on Duke Street and it is important that students follow the instructions of the crossing supervisor.

“KE were able to play the piano… with bananas! Yes, that’s right, bananas!”

Year One have been exploring the different purposes for writing informative texts.

Students have been focusing on perfecting their skills in writing a procedure through a range of modelled, guided and independent writing activities. They are studying the use of language to inform readers on how to carry out a process. We had a lot of fun carrying out the procedures we wrote. Students made the ‘Oobleck’ which is a sticky green slime from a Dr Seuss’ story we read together called ‘Bartholomew and the Oobleck’. We also made some delicious lemonade and marvelous milkshakes! Have a look at some pictures of us making and consuming lemonade! In Visual arts, Year One made a tremendous masterpiece titled ‘Together We Are a Masterpiece’. This art involved each student tracing their unique handprint and writing their strengths and assets, combining them all into a spectacular flower. This activity integrated elements of art and PDH, and was an empowering journey as students embraced their unique qualities that make each and every one of them a valuable member of our community!

KINDY NEWS These bananas are bongos!

KE have been exploring new and different ways to play instruments. In this growing technological age, it is important to familiarise children with using technology.

‘Makey Makey’ is a simple to use and limitless teaching resource. It turns any form of conduction into your keyboard! Through this, KE were able to play the piano… with bananas! Yes, that’s right, bananas! If that wasn’t impressive enough, our magic

bananas turned themselves into Bongos too!

KE may be further exploring what can we do with ‘Makey Makey’ as it doesn’t just stop at the piano and bongos, we can work together to make anything possible!

“Needless to say, there were many sighs of relief when

the timer ran out on the final test.”

After weeks of discussion in preparation, Year Three students finally sat for their

first NAPLAN examinations. They sat four individual papers, designed to assess

the students’ ability in Reading, Language Conventions, Writing and Numeracy.

The students’ attitude and effort was commendable throughout the testing period

and they applied themselves diligently to challenges presented to them.

Needless to say, there were many sighs of relief when the timer ran out on the

final test.

Well done to all the students who participated in this year’s NAPLAN examination.

The first five weeks of Term Two have been very busy and exciting for Year 4 students.

Year 4 students started this term with a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and an eagerness

to learn.

In Geography, students are learning about the natural characteristics of Australia and a

country in Asia. They were given opportunities to pose and investigate key inquiry

questions. Students explored the climate, natural vegetation and native animals of

places in Australia and a country in Asia (China). They examined and investigated the

importance of natural vegetation and natural resources to the environment, animals

and people. They developed an understanding of the diversity of living things, how they

affect each other, and the interdependence of living things and the environment.

YEAR 5 NEWS Year 5 students have been

studying states of matter

(solids, liquids and gases) in

Science and Technology. They

have been conducting lots of

fun and exciting experiments

examining the properties of air

and water, solubility of

substances in liquids and

irreversible changes. These

including building balloon

rockets, seeing what would

dissolve in water, observing

salt dissolved in a liquid and

much more. The students have

been having a great time and

learning lots as well!

YEAR 6 NEWS Term two has already proven to be a busy yet productive term for the students and teachers. As always,

the students are approaching their tasks with enthusiasm and maturity.

In English, the students are focusing on the genre of persuasive writing. The purpose of this type of

writing is to inform. There are already some amazing examples being produced throughout Year Six. Be

prepared for your children to use persuasive language at home to convince you of anything!

We are powering through the Prime Mathematics program and are currently on our way to finishing the

unit on decimals.

The History unit is proving to be very interesting, as the students are learning about systems of

government, federation, voting, laws and democracy. This will culminate in a visit to Canberra on the

very last day of this term.

In Science, the students are learning about electricity. They have been researching the safe use of

electricity in addition to experimenting with circuits. They will eventually construct their own working

circuit using recycled materials.

In Sport, the students have been undertaking gymnastic activities, while focusing on safety and technique. The Year Six teachers look forward to seeing what the students achieve by the end of the term!

The College organised an excursion to Penrith

High School, for a Business Studies Study Day

run by the Western Sydney Social Science

Teachers Association.

The excursion was organised to support and

enhance student learning of Operations,

Marketing, Financial Management and Human

Resource Management.

Students were given examination tips for the

2018 HSC Business Studies examination.

The feedback from the students was positive

especially with the interactive workshops and it

helped in the revision of many concepts.

Business studies Year 11 students participated in a

group activity to better understand the concept of

production and quality. There was a need for high

quality and quantity of paper aeroplanes to be pro-

duced within their factory using various inputs

and their own labour. Thereafter, a quality check

was done by the operational manager i.e. the

teacher, for the planes to pass the stringent quality

expectations test. The hands on activity helped the

students better learn plant lay out, assembly line

production, division of labour and the importance

of quality and Kaizen. The next part was to differ-

entiate their planes to have a competitive ad-

vantage. The students came up with amazing ideas

from green fuel, to more leg space, design, on

board play areas for children and much more.

Bachar Houli Cup- AFL On Wednesday 9th May, 2018, our Year 9 and 10 boys AFL team represented our school in the annual Bacar Houli Cup. This tournament celebrates the success of Bachar Houli, a Muslim sports athlete who last year was part of the Richmond Tigers AFL Grand Final winning team. The day was a success for our boys who came away with 2 victories and a narrow loss in their matches. For a new team with the majority of boys not having any AFL experience, we commend them on the courage and skill displayed throughout the day. Well done!

Bill Turner Cup- Soccer

On Monday 14th May, 2018, our under 15’s boys’ soccer team went down 2-0 to Penrith Anglican College in round 2 of the Bill Turner Cup. It was a disappointing loss for the boys as they looked to have the upper hand on many occasions but failed to capitalise on opportunities. We are fortunate to be in a position where are soccer teams now compete to win the matches we play and not merely attend for the experience. Congratulations to all the boys on their efforts to make round 2 and the mature manner in which they played their matches. In’Shaa’Allah, we aim to be more competitive in all sports as the college moves forward with its growth and aspirations. Mr Omar Etri HoD PHDPE

{ }شهر رمضان الذي أنـزل فيه القرآن هدى للناس وبي نات من الهدى والفرقان

Allah Almighty said: {The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for

mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)} [Al-

Baqarah: 185]

All Praise is due to Allah .سبحانه وتعالى May Allah raise the rank of the Messenger of Allah as well as his family and

companions.

The month of Ramadan had the honor of having the Holy Quran revealed. It had been revealed in the night of al-

Qadr. Fasting the month of Ramadan is also one of the five obligatory practices. Allah Taala promised the fasting

person with great reward in the hereafter. In the Hadith Qudsi:

Every good deed is multiplied from ten up to 700 hundred times except for fasting which is usually done in

sincerity to Allah, the reward of which will be multiplied as many times as Allah willed.

In the month of Ramadan, it is emphasized upon the fasting person to adhere to the best conduct and make the

best use of its days and nights. Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam who is the best role model used to

review the Holy Qur’an with Jibreel (peace be upon him) every night of Ramadan. The person who observes fasting

and recites the Holy Qur’an gathers, by his fasting, between Ramadan and the Holy Qur`an. Therefore; he lives this

month with this Great Book.

Apart from the Qur’an this month brings with it the beautiful act of fasting which not only provide physical benefit

but it lifts the person spiritually as well.

This spiritual aspect of fasting which Islamic Studies Department at AICS is trying to instill within our students.

For this reason, the school reminds the students daily, in the Morning Prayer, about the importance of fasting, the

integrals and nullifiers of fasting and what type of behaviour that should be displayed by a fasting person. These

values are further emphasized on through our Friday ceremony which is conducted in our school hall.

Note: Ramadan posters are beautifully displayed around the school. Thanks to Ms Rahman and Years 7 and 8 D&T

students.

Furthermore, our Ramadhan campaign is still running and we encourage students to continue giving so that we

can reach our goal of $30,000. So far we have collected $4,737.10 and would like to thank you all for your great

support. The Ramadan campaign will allow students to show consideration to those that are less fortunate and give

them a sense of responsibility.

The day of Eid is nearing and the school will be holding a mufti day and Eid assembly on the 19th of June 2018,

students will be in Mufti and a gold coin from each participant is expected and that money will go towards the

same goal the 2018 Ramadan Campaign.

Qur’an Competition update: The top four students of each prim ary class have been chosen to go

through final competition and parents will be notified with the selection of their child.

High school is still in the process of finalising students for the final competition. Once that process is over, parents

of the finalists will be informed.
