Chair’s Corner Spring is coming to Chicago? Or not? Yes, soon the long Chi-

cago winter will be over and spring will show up at our doorsteps. It has been another Chicago style winter with many cold days here and around the country.

For our section that means upcoming busy months and many events till we close our program year. The first big event is obviously the 7th annual Midwest Regional Conference on March 12 and 13 which will be held at Illinois Institute of Technolo-gy. This conference is a product of many hours of volunteer work including many heated discussions about the overall framework of it down to the very small details of the type of name badge we will use this year and anything in between. The plan-ning started early in 2014 and week by week the many positions were filled. As with all meetings two major groups are working together to make this event a successful one. The programming committee sets up the technical sessions with the help of nine technical programming area committees. The difficult task of finding the most appropriate session’s topics, chairs and co-chairs and eventually the high quality papers and presentations are the main responsibility of this committee. The gen-eral arrangements committee is in charge of the many aspects of the logistics in-cluding finance, food, registration and more. These two groups of volunteers need to work very close together to assure a conference that is best in class. Let’s not forget the tremendous effort that goes into the high school program. From finding the interested schools to lining up the program that is of interest to high school stu-dents is as big as the conference itself. This conference is truly an experience that shows how a team of dedicated volunteers can make things happen. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of them. By the time you receive this newsletter, we are very close to the conference days and I hope you have already signed up to attend. If not please be aware that the online registration will close soon, but if you decide at the last minute we still wel-come you to join us. Note that the monthly meeting is part of the conference but to attend you should have chosen that option when registering. A new invitation will be sent out if you only want to attend the dinner. Please check the website for up to date information. Our April meeting is the traditional student night where we honor students from our local three universities. I encourage all the undergraduate and graduate students to present a poster at this event. On top of the cash prize for the winners, consider it a simulated job interview in a relax environment. More on this will be in the next

DuPage E-week Outreach Summary

On Saturday, February 28th, at the conclusion of Engineering Week, AIChE Chicago

YPC members took part in IIT's DuPage E-Week Expo. Volunteers spent all day shar-

ing information about chemical engineering with every age from grade school to high

school. Our booth had a PPE demonstration that allowed the kids to dress up like an

engineer and a lesson on polymers via the fun of brightly colored kinetic sand. It was a

great opportunity to share chemical engineering with a younger generation and get

them excited about what we do! See photos on AIChE Chicago’s picasa photo album

or facebook page.
