quite detrimental to your process. The Accutech AI-1500 automaticallycompensates a 4-wire RTD connection forsensor lead imbalances and terminationcorrosion of connection terminals thataccumulate over time. For comparativelylittle additional cost, a 4-wire RTD providesyou with a much higher value than a normal3-wire sensor. Matching a 4-wire RTDwith an Accutech AI-1500 transmittermakes an unbeatable combination formeasurement accuracy and stability overlong periods of time.

Rapid ResponseChances are that the ambient temperature, the line voltage or the electrical noise inyour process will change faster than yourprocess temperature. At seven updates persecond, the AI-1500 can execute automaticself-calibration, internal self tests andmeasurement parameter validation, while,at the same time, giving you rapid responseto changes. In short, the AI-1500 can reportany temperature changes in the process, aswell as quickly compensate and self-correctfor changes in the environment. Slowertransmitters just cannot measure up.

Automatic Compensation for Long-term Drift and AmbientTemperature ChangesAutomatic self-calibration means that your temperature measurements will stayprecise over the long haul, and overchanges in ambient conditions. The AI-1500 stands up to the rigors of theindustrial environment. Accutech’s uniquedesign and manufacturing techniqueskeep the AI-1500 on target, time and timeagain. To achieve that high level ofstability, each and every AI-1500 goesthrough a rigorous calibration procedure inambient temperatures from -40°F to+185°F. On-board references are readagainst NIST-traceable calibration equipment,so you can count on the precision of yourmeasurements regardless of the variationsin ambient temperatures.

How sure are we of the AI-1500 performanceover time? We stand behind it. Automaticself-calibration to on-board referencestandards ensures measurement stabilityover time, so the AI-1500 is the onlytemperature transmitter with a three-yearcalibration guarantee.

Automatic Compensation forSensor Connection DriftYou can improve the accuracy andstability of virtually any industrialtemperature measurement under 1,000°Fsimply by using a true 4-wire RTDmeasurement. These sensors have provenstability and the measurements obtainedare extremely repeatable. The 4-wiremeasurement techniques used in theAccutech AI-1500 automatically compensatefor unbalanced sensor resistances. These resistances can creep, unnoticed, into 2 and 3-wire RTD sensor connections. The error can exceed ±10˚C1 and can be

Stable measurements from process instrumentation are key to increasing process stability. They start paying immediate dividends by allowing you to increase process throughput, improve product quality and yield.

Over a decade ago, Accutech pioneered self-calibrating instrumentation to achieve dramaticimprovements in measurement stability. The continued development of self-calibrationtechnology has kept Accutech way ahead of the competition in the area of measurementstability. Today, the Accutech Al-1500 allows you to combine the proven advantages ofautomatic self-calibrating instrumentation with the benefits of HART communication.

The Type “K” isrepresentative ofthermocouples inwidespread industrialusage. It is a bitmore precise thanthe Type “J”thermocouple and abit less precise thanthe Type “R” or “S”.Two precisiongrades are availablefor “K” T/C’s, astandard grade andthe special grade.

AACCURACCURACYCY

Sensor PrecisionThere is no point purchasing a superiortransmitter and connecting it to a poorsensor. Sensor error is a major portion ofthe total measurement system error. Thetwo graphs below show you why. Sensor-to-sensor interchangeability is shown fortwo very common sensors, the Type “K”T/C and the Platinum RTD. Interchange-ability is the error you would expect fromswapping sensors. Interchangeabilitymeasures the deviation a given sensor hasfrom the ideal, standard performancecurve for that type sensor. Thus, inter-changeability is a good measure of theabsolute accuracy you could expect fromyour sensor, and can be thought of assensor error or sensor accuracy.

Two grades of Type “K” thermocouples areavailable, the standard grade and thespecial grade. A variety of grades areavailable for the Platinum RTD’s. Normaland Extended Precision are generallyused in industrial applications. UltraPrecision and individually calibrated RTD’sare also available from Accutech.

The Platinum RTDenjoys widespreadindustrial usage. It isavailable in a varietyof precision grades. The normal precisionand extendedprecision are widelyused in industrialapplications. Ultraprecision andindividually calibratedRTD’s are also availablefrom Accutech forhigher accuracyapplications.

Of course, everybody talks “Accuracy”, but what do they really deliver? Just the sum ofrepeatability, hysteresis and conformity to a non-linear curve. At Accutech, the industrystandard definition is not good enough. At Accutech, “Accuracy” means “Absolute Accuracy”– the measured temperature is the actual temperature.

Absolute AccuracyAccutech introduced the concept ofabsolute accuracy a decade ago. Right outof the box, your Accutech instruments readthe actual temperature, with full NISTtraceability. The AI-1500 automaticallyself-calibrates to compensate for changesin the ambient temperature, variations inline voltages, and fluctuations in internalelectrical component values. This self-calibration automatically corrects for long-term drift and stray electrical noise, resulting in absolute accuracy, and givingyou much better measurements than youhave been able to make in the past – eventhough you thought that your old deviceswere highly “Accurate”. For a fulldiscussion please see Reference 2.

If you want to really cut your measurementerrors, order full temperature measurementsystems. We have systematically reducedthe measurement error from each componentin the measurement system and routinelydeliver instrument systems with absoluteaccuracy better than ±0.25°C. If you requireeven greater precision, please call us at1-800-879-6576 for measurement systemswith absolute accuracy better than ±0.05°C.

Repeatability vs. AccuracyIn the old days of single-loop feedbackcontrol, repeatability was good enough forindustrial measurement equipment. However, today’s more complex controlstrategies and interacting variables requirethat one measurement be compared toanother measurement. When twomeasurements are compared, repeatabilityis no longer good enough. These measure-ments demand absolute accuracy. This isparticularly true whenever two variablesare compared in a computer-based controlsystem. Measurements must be comparedon an absolute accuracy basis.

The old saying, “Garbage in, garbage out”,holds true. You need good data going intothe control systems to get good controldecisions coming out. Repeatability is nolonger sufficient to achieve a high level ofmeasurement system accuracy.

Temperature MeasurementSystemsGood temperature measurements requirea complete measurement system –starting with a sensor and ending withreliable information driving a controldevice. It’s easy to place a weak link inthis chain and wind up with poor results.

You can get great temperaturemeasurements by thinking about theentire measurement system and weedingout the errors in each part. Start by cuttingthe sensor error. Check the accompanyinggraphs and simply specify the sensorprecision grade that you need in yourapplication.

Next, minimize the sensor measurementerror. Using a 2 or 3-wire RTD canintroduce measurement errors of over10˚C1. Using the Accutech true 4-wireRTD measurement, you can reduce thesensor measurement error to a fraction ofa degree. This technique also automaticallycompensates for imbalances in lead wireresistance and terminal corrosion thataccumulate over time in industrialapplications.

Finally, cut the transmitter error. The errorin the AI-1500 is remarkably small.Performance specifications are evenhigher than those of much moreexpensive transmitters. Automatic self-calibration and rapid responsecompensate for extraneous environmentalinfluences - and give you a reading youcan count on.

NIST TraceabilityEach AI-1500 is calibrated using NISTtraceable equipment and includes a NISTcalibration certificate. Direct traceabilitysimplifies your ISO 9000 certification. TheAI-1500 goes even further by accountingfor the ambient temperature impact on themeasurements. Install your AI-1500 inambient temperatures between -40°F to+185°F. Your NIST certificate is still valid. For more demanding requirements, special transmitter calibration is availableas an option.

Accurate Measurement SystemsStart with a precise sensor. Minimize thesensor measurement error and add anaccurate transmitter to make an accuratetemperature system. With Accutechmeasurement systems, you are assuredthat your total measurement systemaccuracy will meet your specifications.

For industrial measurements up to 200°F,an absolute accuracy better than ±0.5°F isreadily obtainable. At 1,000°F this errorband is slightly higher at ±0.75°F. Tightererror bands are possible with extra care, but temperature measurements to betterthan ±1˚F can be maintained in mostindustrial process applications.

For tighter accuracy, consider usingAccutech Ultra-Precision RTDs. TheseRTDs are fully interchangeable to thetolerance specified on the previous page. With Accutech Ultra-Precision RTDs, youcan achieve better accuracy than ispossible with individually fitted Callendar-Van Dusen sensor coefficients.

System Accuracy at 150°C

Model AI-1500 ±0.08°C

Ultra-Precision RTD ±0.16°C

Total ±0.24°C

Not only do you get better measurementprecision; you have complete sensorinterchangeability. No recalibration orloading of coefficients is necessary whenyou swap sensors or transmitters – justwire them up and go! For even bettermeasurement accuracy, specifyAccutech’s Individually Calibrated RTDs.

Accutech also offers the AI-2000 UPtransmitter, which allows you to achieve atotal measurement system to a precisionof ±0.1°F with NIST traceability. Pleasecall Accutech at 1-800-879-6576 for further information.
