In Alaska, we do everything big. From mountains and glaciers to wildlife, Alaska is known the

world over for its unique and breathtaking sights. With 39 mountain ranges, 30,000 miles of

coastline, approximately 100,000 glaciers and over 54 million acres of national parks, you

can be sure there’s plenty to see and do while you’re here.

CIRI Alaska Tourism specializes in travel from Seward to Fairbanks, along the Railbelt in Southcentral Alaska. The coastal fishing town of Seward, with its bustling harbor, is the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. Stroll through Seward’s walking district, featuring many local shops with uniquely Alaskan gifts, on your way to the Alaska SeaLife Center – Alaska’s only public aquarium and ocean wildlife rescue center.

Anchorage’s unique geographic position allows visitors to maximize their vacation time with near limitless opportunities for adventure. With the midnight sun high overhead, events, tours, restaurants and activities start early and end late.

The historic town of Talkeetna is nestled between Denali National Park and Wasilla, and only 60 miles from Denali, North America’s highest peak, formerly known as Mount McKinley. Once the supply center for a gold mining district, tourists and locals flock to Talkeetna each summer to embark on flightseeing, ziplining and rafting trips and to indulge in the local arts and crafts boutiques.

Fairbanks is famous for its gold rush history, as well as its art and culture. First established as a mining town, the discovery of gold in 1902 transformed this small town into Alaska’s second largest city. Fairbanks has become a bustling metropolis with museums, galleries, shops and entertainment.

Where is Seward?Seward is approximately 125 miles (about 2.5 hours) south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway and is easily accessible by highway and rail; it is also a frequent stop for major cruise lines. If you’re traveling by road, there are many sights to see as you travel along this National Scenic Byway from Anchorage to Seward.

As you leave the largest city in the state, you’ll pass Potter Marsh, a protected waterfowl habitat. Follow Alaska’s scenic byway and scan the jagged cliffs for Dall sheep, or watch for the powerful bore tide, pushing the water into Turnagain Arm. You may even see beluga whales feeding in the waters. The scenery is breathtaking and amazing, whether you ride the road or the rail!

Exclusive AccessUnlike many remote wilderness lodges in Alaska that can only be accessed by plane or a long boat ride across rough waters, Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge is easily reached via a 45-minute day cruise from the port of Seward. The cruise travels the calm, protected waters of Resurrection Bay and is provided by Kenai Fjords Tours, departing daily at noon.

Guests returning on the Resurrection Bay Tour depart Fox Island at 2:00 p.m. on their final day, after savoring breakfast prepared by the island chef at the lodge. These guests also enjoy a wild Alaska salmon and prime rib buffet for lunch. Add a half-pound of chilled Alaska king crab for a nominal fee. Guests seeking to adventure deeper into Kenai Fjords National Park can opt for a National Park Tour or the premium Northwestern Fjord Tour that travel outside Resurrection Bay and cruise to the face of calving glaciers in Kenai Fjords National Park. The Northwestern Fjord Tour takes guests deep into the national park to view the glaciers of the Northwestern Fjord. This cruise is popular with birders as it also visits the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, island home to teeming seabird rookeries.

Kenai Fjords Wilderness LodgeKenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge consists of eight guest cabins situated on a narrow peninsula of land on Fox Island just 12 miles south of Seward. Four of these cabins are connected in one building, two facing the quiet lagoon, and two facing Resurrection Bay with ocean views. The other four cabins are duplexes with water views.

LuggagePack an overnight bag for your trip to Fox Island and store remaining luggage upon check-in, in Seward.

CabinsAmenities in the cabins include one queen bed and one queen-sized sofa-sleeper, premium linens and towels, private bath with shower, propane heating, electric lights (solar powered) and battery-powered alarm clock. All cabins are designated smoke-free areas.

TransportationBecause transportation to and from Fox Island is provided by our sister company, Kenai Fjords Tours, your stay includes the Resurrection Bay Tour. You also have the option to upgrade to the National Park Tour or the Northwestern Fjord Tour.

Transportation departs from Kenai Fjords Adventure Center, Small Boat Harbor, 1302 4th Avenue, Seward, AK 99664. Complimentary parking in our private lot with free shuttle to the Seward Small Boat Harbor is available.

Check-In & Check-OutOvernight guests dine in a private lodge down the beach, separate from the day cruise passengers at the Day Lodge. Where is Talkeetna? The historic town of Talkeetna – a Native word meaning “river of plenty” – is only 113 miles (about two hours) north of the metropolitan city of Anchorage, at the point where the Talkeetna and the Chulitna Rivers join the Susitna River.

A frontier town that was the inspiration for the popular TV show “Northern Exposure,” you’ll think you’ve stepped back in time when you visit this charming village of just under 900 year-round residents. Surrounded by untamed wilderness but filled with sincere hospitality, Talkeetna is a place where you can take a leisurely walk and experience a friendly community, tour historic buildings and learn about the early settlers in this region. Fifteen of Talkeetna’s 24 buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Denali – The Great OneOne of the highlights for guests visiting the Talkeetna area is the opportunity to see North America’s tallest peak, Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley. Rising above the tundra at 20,310 feet (formerly believed to be 20,320 feet or 6,194 meters prior to a 2013 measurement), outstanding views of Denali can be enjoyed from several places in town, but the best view is from the deck of the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge. While in town, it is common to meet some of the climbers who will attempt to summit Denali, or who have just completed their climb. They’re easily recognized by their “raccoon eyes” from exposure to the bright sun, their heavy backpacks loaded with gear, and their expressions of pure joy and exhaustion from achieving such an incredible feat.

Talkeetna’s HistoryOriginally, Talkeetna was the site of a Tanaina Native village. Miners began trading at this site and established the first trading post in 1896. A gold rush to the Susitna River brought prospectors to the area, and by 1910 Talkeetna had become a riverboat steamer station. In 1915, the town was designated as the home base for the Alaska Engineering Commission, which would build the Alaska Railroad. The community’s population rose to 1,000.

World War I and the completion of the railroad in 1919 dramatically decreased the population, which plummeted to around 300. In the last 10 years, however, Talkeetna has experienced a resurgence of new growth.

Mountain Climbers’ ParadiseDenali is closer to Talkeetna than to the entrance to Denali National Park, making the town the take-off point for those attempting to summit North America’s highest peak. This proximity affords many opportunities for flightseeing around the mountain, and many of the flightseeing companies offer glacier landings. Step out and set foot on the base of Denali, the “Great One,” and you will immediately sense the ultimate grandeur and beauty of Alaska.
