VoiceVoice refers to the relation of the verb’s
action to the subject.The voice of a verb may be active or passive.Think about the words “active” and
“passive”.What does active mean?What does the word passive mean?
Active VoiceThe subject of the sentence performs or
causes the action expressed by the verb.Ex. Lily made a mistake.Ex. John helped the other students.Ashley threw the ball at his head.
Ask what is the subject? What did the subject do or cause to happen?
Passive VoiceThe subject receives the action.Active and passive sentences may have a
direct object.Ex. The mistake was made by Lily.Ex. The other students were helped by John.
Ask what is your subject? Ask action is the subject receiving?
ExamplesThe boys take out the trash.
The trash is taken out by the boys.
My class is doing the assignment.
The assignment is done by my class.
PracticeTell me whether the following sentences are in the active
or passive voice.
