I believe in architecture to be highly adaptive and beneficial to its people, climate, and context. A highly tailored design that draws cues and inspiration from its surrounding, both socially and environmentally sustainable, and benefits both its clients and users is a priority.

Conceptualizing a project is one challenge, communicating it is another, especially when dealing with clients of different backgrounds and culture. I use a wide range of communication techniques including computer renderings, hand drawings, all levels of physical models, and my least favored method, talking about the project.

STAZIONE DI MILANO PORTA GENOVA

Page 7: Ahmad Ridzwan Rahmat Portfolio 2015

The brief calls for a mixed-use redevelopment of the Porta Genova Station car park. The site is located in the southwest district of Milan, just outside the old inner city ring.

Porta Genova Station and Naviglio Grande, are two of the oldest historical monuments of their type within the city, dating back 144 and 837 years old respectively. It is important for the design strategy to respond to its context, including stations or stops for several modes of transportation active around the site. The creation of public spaces is a key design strategy to incorporate commuters, users, pedestrians and cyclists into the life of the development.

Physical models of various scales were used as the main communication method for the project. Scales for the models include 1:2000, 1:250, and 1:50; each used to explain and understand different aspects of the project, from its urban setting, how it sits within its surrounding context, down to spatial qualities of its internal street.

The centerpiece for this project was a curved 3-meter long 1:250 model. It includes the site with fully detailed surrounding buildings. The models were cut using both the workshop Trotec laser cutter and the CNC router with added light fixtures as a finishing touch.

Whilst physical models were used to understand massing and spatial qualities on a larger scale, 3D renders allow for spaces to be understood from a user’s perspective.

It demonstrates how various parts of the building are to be viewed and experienced by its users. Understanding materiality of both the project and its surrounding is also explained by renders and photo montages. All three communication approaches, physical models, 3D renders, and hand drawings were essential to the success of the project.

SKETCHESA pen and paper are never more than an arm’s length away. Whether it is to be used to capture ideas, travel journals, or art, sketching will always be a passion that suits any role.

Hand drawing is also key throughout the design process, especially within its early stages. It allows for decisions and ideas to be conveyed quickly and unrestrictedly. The approach adapted to sketching is similar to the approach in design, whereby smaller elements are used to create a larger picture, best demonstrated in the Forest Creature series (left).

AQUA ECHIDNA

Aqua Echidna is a proposed performance space for the Stage 3 development of Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park (GASP!). The approach for the design studio was to think unconventionally and adapt an approach used by existing firms into the design strategy. 2012Architecten’s approach of repurposing materials was chosen as the main design strategy.

Locations for discarded or unused building material were plotted onto a Material Map at the beginning of the design process. The design and construction methods would then revolve around available materials within a certain distance, which included driftwood, timber offcuts, chocolate production machinery, and boat hulls.

iDECIDE

Page 23: Ahmad Ridzwan Rahmat Portfolio 2015

iDecide was completed as a part of the Design Research Methods subject, whereby theoretical ideas were the main focus. The brief called for the exploration of the role of architecture for a “democratic space” of the future.

In this case, democracy and the notion of the embassy are abolished in favor of a singular dictatorship rule. Governing will now be done autonomously by a supercomputer based on real time data collected from the populace rather than easily corrupt elected government bodies.

The project is a response against the proposal for a warehouse-styled hardware store on a brownfield site in Launceston, Tasmania. The aim was to demonstrate to city council on the potential of a brownfield site.

The proposed development therefore, was a mixed-use development, revolving around the idea of cycling as a main means of transportation. Several preconceptions, such as bicycle parking and circulation had to be rethought to advance the proposal. Additional features for this proposal includes vertical parks to pull the ground level up, and landscaping mounds to guide circulation and the creation of spaces.

Page 26: Ahmad Ridzwan Rahmat Portfolio 2015

The Melville Street car parking in Hobart, Tasmania is a collection of three adjoining lots, each with its own entrance facing onto streets with noticeably different characters.

The proposal therefore, responds to this by having three separate developments with distinct construction and cladding styles. Timber, concrete, and aluminum apartment blocks face into a central courtyard for the existing weekend markets. Having three unique building styles adds to the challenge of developing three different proposals simultaneously rather than one.

OTHER WORKS

Page 29: Ahmad Ridzwan Rahmat Portfolio 2015

Other works include projects of varying sizes and functions; from a hand crafted swing made of Malaysian Meranti hardwood, private houses, and a bus-retrofitting project. The projects are a mixture of single and collaboratively done works done in and out of academia.

A wide array of skills were developed working on different projects, everything from plumbing and waste management for the bus retrofitting, to traditional woodworking joints in timber joinery.

Photography allows for the exploration of different angles and techniques to change the light, focus, and most importantly, composition, aspects present in both photography and architecture.
