Prophet Mohammad: Historic Words During Last Hajj

In the eleventh Islamic month (Zul-Qu’dah) the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) made an announcement that he will be performing the pilgrimage of the Ka’bah that year for the last time.

The announcement of the Prophet’s pilgrimage spread throughout the city as well as the tribes. It was clear that, due to the prominence of the pilgrimage, and the coincidence of this journey with the last months of the Prophet’s life, the sermons given would entail a vital message.

News inspired great interest in Muslims, whereby thousands accompanied the Prophet to perform the rituals of Hajj. The Prophet performed the rituals of Umrah Mufradah and then entered ‘Arafat on the 9th of Zul-Hujjah to perform the ritual pertaining to that day. On that day, the land of 'Arafah witnessed a great continued on page 2

Islamic traditions, about Prophet Jesus, are one indication of how much Muslims Love and Respect Jesus (peace be upon him).

Prophet Jesus is referred to quite often in the Holy Quran, six times under the title "Messiah".

To Muslims, Jesus is a man of voluntary poverty, humility and long-suffering. He teaches returning good for evil; Jesus said “Charity does not mean doing good to him who does good to you; Charity

means that you should do good to him who does you harm.”

He loves the poor and embraces poverty: “The day Jesus was raised to heaven, he left behind nothing but a woollen garment, a

slingshot and two sandals.”

He preaches against attachment to worldly things; Jesus said “He who seeks worldly things is like the man who drinks sea water: the

more he drinks, the thirstier he becomes, until it kills him.”

Many of the Prophet Jesus’ sayings in Islam are clearly derived from Biblical sources – “Place your treasures in heaven, for the heart of man is where his treasure is”; “Look at the birds coming and going!

They neither reap nor plough, and God provides for them.”

Sometimes, there is a sort of gloss on words of Prophet Jesus from the Gospel: “Oh disciples, do not cast pearls before swine, for the

swine can do nothing with them . . . wisdom is more precious than

pearls and whoever rejects wisdom is worse than a swine.”

When Prophet Muhammad took over Mecca in AD 630, he cleansed the Ka'aba (in Mecca) of idols, and destroyed all icons except the ones for Virgin Mary and her son, Jesus. Those, he covered with his own coat.

Prophet Mohammad: continued from page 1

Historic Words During Last Hajj

and splendid gathering, the like of which had not till then been seen by the people of the Hijaaz.

The voice of monotheism and the slogans of worship for the One God were ringing in that land. The Prophet offered the noon prayers in Arafat along with 100,000 people.

Thereafter, the Prophet mounted his camel, and delivered the historical sermon, which was repeated by his companions, who had loud voices, for those at a distance might to know what the Prophet was saying.

On that day he commenced his sermon:

"O people! Hear my words, for it is possible that I may not meet you at this spot in future".

“O people! Your blood and property (honor and reputation) are respectable for one another, like this day and this month, till the day on which you meet Allah, and every transgression in this behalf is unlawful".

To be sure of the desired impression of his words on the people about the respectability of the lives and property of the Muslims the Prophet asked Rabi'ah bin Umayyah to ask them: "Which month is this?" - All of them replied: "It is a respectable month and warfare during this month is prohibited and unlawful".

Then the Prophet (PBUH&HP) said to Rabi'ah, "Tell them: Allah has declared your blood and property unlawful and respectable for one another like this month until you leave this world."

He again said to Rabi'ah: "Ask them which land is this?" All of them replied, "It is a respectable land and bloodshed and transgression in it is strictly prohibited". He then said to Rabi'ah: "Tell them your blood and property are respectable like this land and every sort of transgression is prohibited".

Thereafter the Prophet said to Rabi'ah: "Ask them which day is this?" They replied: "It is the day of Haj al-Akbar (the Great Haj)". The Prophet said: "Tell them your blood and property are respectable like this day".

You will return to Allah (SWT) soon and in that world your good and bad deeds will be weighed. I tell you: One, to whom something has been entrusted, should return it to its owner.

Yes, O people! You must know that usury [lending money at unreasonably high rates of interest] is strictly prohibited in Islam. Those, who have invested their capital to earn interest can take back their capital only...

O people! Satan has lost hope of his being worshipped in your land. However, if you follow him in small matters he will be happy and pleased. So, do not follow Satan…

Yes, O people! Your women have rights over you and you too have rights over them. Your right is that they should not admit anyone in the house without your consent, and should not be commit a corrupt action …. I recommend you on this land that you should be kind to your women,

because they are the trust of Allah at your hands and they have become lawful for you according to His laws.

Yes, O people! Hear my words carefully and ponder over them. I am leaving two memorable things amongst you:

One of them is the Book of Allah, and The other is my Progeny (PBUT),

You will not be misguided if you hold on tight to these two.

Yes, O people! Hear my words carefully and ponder over them. Every Muslim is the brother of another Muslim and all Muslims of the world are brothers of one another. And anything out of the property of the Muslims is not lawful for a Muslim except when he acquires it with an honest intention.

Yes, O people! Those present should tell these remarks to those who are absent. After me there will be no prophet and after you Muslims there will be no Ummah.

O people! You should know that I am announcing it today that I have banned all the ceremonies and beliefs of the Age of Ignorance and I am informing you of their falsity".

At this juncture, the Prophet (PBUH&HP) discontinued the sermon and making a sign towards the sky with his forefinger said:

"O Allah! I have communicated your message".

Then after saying thrice: "O Allah! Be witness to it", he brought the sermon to an end.

In this way, during this journey, the Prophet (PBUH&HP) reminded Muslims of several vital and decisive issues through multiple sermons. These were supplement to the teaching of the Hajj rituals which was at the center of his focus during this journey.

Along the same lines, after finishing the Hajj rituals and on the way back to Mecca, the Messenger of Allah stopped at Ghadir Khum on 18th of Zul-Hujjah.

Through a sermon and by the decree of Allah (SWT), the Prophet (PBUH&HP) introduced Amir-al-Mu’minin, Ali (PBUH), as his successor, thus announcing:

“For whoever I am his Leader (mawla),

'Ali is his Leader (mawla).

O' God, love those who love him,

and be hostile to those who are hostile to him."

Therefore, during this last journey and besides teaching the Hajj rituals, the Prophet (PBUH&HP) clarified the most critical principles of Islamic beliefs, ethics, and society, and left a completed version of the religion as his legacy.

Eventually, on the noon of Monday, the 28th of Safar of the elevenths year of migration, the Holy and Great Spirit of the Divine Messenger of Allah, peace and prayers be upon him and his progeny, ascended to heaven.

Ahlul-Bayt Islamic School offers condolences to our holy Imam Mahdi (PBUH) and all Muslims, upon the 28th of Safar, the anniversary of the martyrdom of the last Messenger, the mercy upon the universe, and master of the Prophets, Prophet Muhammad Mustafa (PBUH&HP).

Homework Packages – Concerning students who are absent from school due to vacation

If a student will be missing school due to a vacation, a parent needs to

contact the office or send a note with the dates your child will be absent

to the classroom teacher.

Please note that it is impossible for our teachers to prepare a homework

package for students who are absent from school due to vacation.

If parents decide to remove their children from class in order to travel,

teachers may provide reading materials for students while away;

however, the responsibility will be on students and parents to catch up

on any work missed during their absence.

With the winter months slowly approaching us, it is time to get ourselves ready for winter weather in Ottawa.

As you know, it is important to dress your child appropriately with winter coats, hats and gloves or mittens daily.

When snow is on the ground, students are expected to wear boots.

We will be going outside in cold weather and proper clothing will make this activity most enjoyable for our students.

Ahlul-Bayt Islamic School community values a safe and caring school for everyone. Please review the following expectations with your child/ren.

During the winter months we need to remember:

• Dress warmly wearing a winter coat, boots, mitts, and toques.

• Brush snow off your clothing before you enter the building.

• Bring an extra pair of shoes to wear inside.

Playground Play During Wintertime: Precautions & Consequences Throwing or Kicking Snow or Ice: Strictly prohibited anywhere on the playground. Snow stays on the ground. Students who fail to abide by this rule may face serious consequences including suspension from school.

Cold Weather Reminder ... At this time of the year the weather can change from day to day and from morning to afternoon.

Students are expected to go outside at recess unless it is raining or the temperature condition reaches -20 degrees with the wind chill.

We will go outside in cold weather as long as the temperature and the wind chill are not below -20.

Going outside and getting a little fresh air is a nice change for the students’ classroom activities. Students are expected to dress appropriately for the weather. Please help keep your child safe by sending winter gear with them and if possible pack an extra set of mitts and hat in their back packs.

Approximate thresholds set by Environment Canada:

Risk of frostbite in prolonged exposure occurs when wind chill is below -25

Frostbite possible in 10 minutes at -35

Frostbite possible in less than 2 minutes at -60

Cold and Illness Many thanks for keeping your children home when they are sick.

It is very easy to pass on colds and flu in a school environment.

Children, who do not feel well, do not learn well, and learning is definitely our goal!

If students are well enough to be at school, then the expectation is that they go outside for recess.

Unfortunately, we do not have staff on duty inside during recess times.

Congratulations .. Citizenship Award Winners

December’s Character Trait is Generosity

• Generosity is being willing to share with others • Generosity is giving freely of yourself and your possessions without

expecting anything in return • Generosity is giving more than you can, and pride is taking less than

you need

The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah,

is as the likeness of a grain (of corn);

it grows seven ears, and each ear has a hundred grains.

Allah gives manifold increase to whom He pleases.

And Allah is All- Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower.

It All Started with

a Poppy World War 1

It’s July 28 1914.

It seems like just yesterday, sitting

down playing games and having

fun, but today no more fun.

You think it’s fun seeing your

friend get blown up by a bomb.

You think it’s fun getting shot by a

gun, well it’s not fun.

This, right here, is my history, and

it lasted for 4 years.

Finally, it’s November 11, 1918,

and the war ended.

Something is not right here, even

though the war ended

It’s still a disaster.

Grass is burnt, ashes in the air.

You think all hope is gone, look

down to your feet what do you

see. You see a poppy, and you

know what that Poppy means.

It’s a sign of hope, it means that

people will remember, remember

that I fought for war that we

fought for war.

Peace will start from that poppy.

It all started with a poppy.

A Full Day of Remembrance As we do every year, our students worked with the Vanier Beautification

Group to clean-up the Vanier cenotaph parade route on the morning of

Remembrance Day.

Our students attended the parade later that day and join the community

in their commemoration ceremony.

Some students laid their poppies to rest on the cenotaph before

returning to school.

ABIS is Scent-free School Some students have been bringing scented items into school and, after several reminders, this remains an issue.

What is scent- free?

When we talk about scents, we usually mean the smells or odours from cosmetics (perfume, make-up, shampoo, deodorant, etc.) or from other products such as air fresheners, cleaners, etc.

This includes items such as (but is not limited to):

• Perfume, fragrances, and cologne

• Cosmetics

• Lotions and creams

• Air fresheners and deodorizers

• Certain soaps

• Scented hand sanitizers

Please talk to your child about this policy and ensure that they do not bring scented items to school. This can be very problematic for individuals in the school. Scents can cause headaches, dizziness, difficulty with concentration, skin irritation, and many other unpleasant side effects.
