You’ll read about Jenny Karp who grew up repurposing before it even became all the rage. Connie Cetti was utterly surrounded by creativity growing up, we doubt she would have had any other path for her career and business.
How wonderful it is to carry on a legacy for DePalo & Sons now in its third generation! Get inspired by a vision Shelley Malcolm and Garin Sinclair had to restore a beautiful little chapel for the benefit of their community.

Jeannie Bork runs a veritable AHah! moment laboratory at Reminisce, 1344 Pine St. in Paso Robles. More than 20 talented dealers sell their creations and antiques to eager customers.
The space has been an antique mall for 30 years; Jeannie took over the reins in 2006 after former owner Judy Taylor retired.
“(This store) is my dream times a lot,” she said. “Not a lot of people can say that.”
Jeannie had to wait for the right time to realize her dream, though.
“If God would have given it to me any earlier, I would have screwed it up for sure,” she quipped.
At the birth of Reminisce, Jeannie brought in more types of merchandise, including new items, gift items and local artist creations.
Jeannie values her dealers, who repurpose and refurbish items with such skill that sometimes customers snap up items as they’re carried into the store.
“They are so talented, it just blows me away,” she said.
Those items don’t cost an arm and a leg, either. Jeannie said that Jane Stokes, who sells her items in bay No. 6 under the name One of a Kind, likes to keep her prices affordable so just about anyone can afford to create an attractive living space.
“My mission is to not be greedy,” Jeannie pointed out. “I make some money, but I also like to save my customers money.”
With so much reasonably priced, quality merchandise and a loyal customer base, the entire look of Jeannie’s store can completely change from week to week.
“Some customers are afraid not to come in for fear they’ll miss something.”
Those who would like to catch the creative buzz have everything they need at Reminisce to get started. About a year ago, Jeannie had an AHah! moment when she decided to offer the necessary tools, including how-to classes, paint, brushes, wax, knobs and handles.

Barbara Saia, owner of Happy Go Smile, 36 N. Ocean Ave. in Cayucos, is a whirlwind of creativity. Not only does she create most of the artwork and all the printed T-shirts in her store, she also bakes and sells cupcakes, runs her store, teaches art classes, and creates art left in public places for strangers to take, keep and enjoy.
Happy Go Smile was born on May 1, 2013. A year earlier, Barbara had lost her job and was trying to figure out her next life’s mission. Her dear friend, Wendy Ryan, wanted to open a store and Barbara agreed to partner with her.
“If it wasn’t for Wendy, there wouldn’t be a store,” said Barbara, “When she asked me to open a shop with her, I said you are the only one I could do that with because we work so well together. When we work on projects we don’t even talk we just know what needs to be done and get the job done!”
Inside Barbara’s home is a sea of whimsy--with the color red as her starting point and black-and-white as her accents.
“It’s loved and lived-in.” She explained. She loves things that make people smile, so she carries her whimsey happy style into

her store. “Basically, it’s a continuation of my
home,” she explained. Barbara also sells T-shirts and cupcakes
created by her own two hands. She garment-prints T-shirts that say “Happy Go Smile,” “Happy Go Cupcakes,” and her biggest seller, “Happy Go Glamping.” The sayings have been trademarked. If anyone has another “Happy Go” saying they’d like on a T-shirt, they can place a custom order with Barbara.
Barbara’s 24-year-old daughter, Natellie, created the graphics featured on Barbara’s T-shirts, like the trailer on the glamping shirt and the cupcake on the cupcake shirt.
When Natellie was 12 years old, Barbara and her husband, Jeri, let her paint an entire bedroom wall. She covered it with gigantic stars all over. Later, she changed it up by painting a scene with huge trees and paper cranes.
Allowing Natellie to express herself without restraint helped make her the success she is today. One week after earning a four-year college degree in studio art, she was hired by Anthropologie full-time as a display designer and builder. She and her 30-year-old brother, Nick, live in the Bay Area.
Perhaps Barbara’s biggest A-Hah! moment came when she started teaching mixed media paint and collage classes at her store.
“I truly believe everyone has art in them,” she said. “I see them spark and come alive after they’ve created their own individual piece of art. It’s so rewarding.”

Living the shabby chic style before it had an official name, Jenny Karp grew to appreciate the art of upcycling. She and her husband Joe run Glitterfarm which features products that reflect “Organic Glamour.” Together, the Karps make hearts from retired California wine barrel rings, signs and crates made from reclaimed wood, and now resell CeCe Caldwell’s Paints, a line of organic paints and finishes designed to give furniture that chalky, vintage look.
“My husband and I have been making, restoring, and selling upcycled products for years, and have always wanted to make this our full-time business,” says Jenny. “When we opened the Glitterfarm Paint Store online last year, we were finally able to make the jump, and we haven’t looked back.”
Combining Glitterfarm’s handmade products with products that make furniture refinishing safe and accessible to women, the company has a growing base of enthusiastic fans.
“When you make things with your hands, or renew things and give them new life, it’s a creative, organic process,” says Jenny. “You’re creating something you can feel good about having, using, and showing off, and that’s the Organic Glamour of Glitterfarm.”

Soon after Scott and Andrea William were married, they purchased a small deli and liquor store when they were both 25 years old. Fast forward 30 years and their labor of love is now transformed into DePalo & Sons, 2665 Shell Beach Rd. in Shell Beach and voted “Best Delicatessen in the Tri-Counties.” They were able to raise four sons with their first grand baby on the way.
DePalo & Sons is actually a legacy that began in Brooklyn, New York where DePalo & Sons Italian Grocery was founded by Andrea’s grandparents, Giuseppe DePalo and his wife Cecelia in 1924. They served their neighborhood and community with the finest imported and domestic meats, cheeses, specialty groceries as well as freshly prepared Italian delicacies. Today, Scott and Andrea carry on its legacy by providing tradition drawing from the old and serving the new.
One of the most popular items sold in the deli is Dr. Tedone’s Fresh Mozzarella traditionally prepared each day by Andrea’s 91-year-old father Dr. Louis M. Tedone. He makes 500 lbs. of fresh mozzarella a week. After he makes the cheese, he finishes his daily routine with 50 push-ups and 50 sit-ups.
Although he is well known for his fresh mozzarella cheese today, Dr. Tedone was recently honored by French Hospital for his successful practice as a pediatrician and a new nursery wall was named after him.
It only takes a few minutes with this entrepreneurial couple to understand why their passion to carry on the DePalo & Sons legacy (365 days a year) means so much to them and their family. “Buon Appetito”

After growing a successful business for 30 years, Scott and Andrea started their own wine label, Mattina Fiore, offering 7 variety of wines. They also recently launched a line of 4 Italian tomato sauces named after Andrea’s mother, Grace.

Many thought it foolish, while others believed. The decades old church, with boarded-over windows, sat empty for about two years, readied for demolition, until the property developer changed his mind. This opened the doors to a new vision. Long-saddened hearts of its neighbors were replaced by hopeful prayers and real dreams.
The mission-style chapel was beloved for its vintage, humble presence and well crafted architecture. It defied demolition and was destined for a new life. “The Pearl”, as it is now fondly called, began during a talk between friends, and grew with neighborhood gatherings. Taking on the project demanded approval from neighbors and city officials. Maintaining it would require successful management and draw events that would be cohesive with the standards of the peaceful community, as well as make the project affordable.
For Shelley Malcolm and Garin Sinclair, mothers of school age children, with the support of their husbands, and foundation of faith and affirmations, the dream came to life. Within 6 months of receiving their permits, and with constant enthusiastic community support, the former Methodist Church became La Perla del Mar (Spanish for Pearl By the Sea). Its doors first re-opened to a winter wedding, immediately followed by its first church service with At Cross Ministries. From its first week, it welcomed yoga classes and acting classes, films, art shows and concerts. Most significantly, it has become a destination for weddings and receptions from as faraway as Korea and Japan. The little church embodies foundations of community, celebration, culture, hope and healing - and anticipates its promising future.

Connie Cetti’s creative journey seemed to begin from birth. “Growing up, I never knew a time when I wasn’t making something,” she explained. Her whole family was constantly drawing, painting, plastering, sculpting, sewing and even jewelry making. She was inspired by her mother who designed holiday cards for Marston’s Department Store in San Diego. Growing up in Seal Beach, she remembered Bob Dylan and Joan Baez performed at the local coffee houses. It was the ultimate Bohemian climate and Connie lived in the center of it.
In high school, Connie had a knack for sewing. She and her friend, Kathy, silk screened sun images on burlap purses they sewed and sold them. She even designed and tailored her friend’s prom dress. Using her entrepreneurial skills, Connie sold a daisy broach she made from enamel to May Co. Department store. They wanted more but she didn’t have the resources to fill the order.
Connie’s natural next step was to enter Long Beach State University as an art major where she eventually met her husband Gary Cetti. He too was an artist and made ceramic pieces that were featured in galleries. Just one year short of graduating, she married Gary and together they built a pottery business. Gary made the pieces and Connie painted them. They sold them at renaissance fairs for many years.
In 1979, Connie and Gary built their home in the Refugio mountains of Santa Barbara where they lived for 38 years and raised their 2 kids, Livia and Mario. Both kids won art scholarships in their respective senior years towards college. When the kids were in elementary school, Connie started helping with school plays by sewing costumes and painting the sets on stage.

to paint and design structures for miniature golf parks. “That was the funnest time for me,” she recalled.
“I got to project manage the construction and design and paint the structures as well. We built 2 parks a year and I was always below budget!” she laughed.
Although she enjoyed painting, the toll on her back made her settle down in 1998 and she opened her current antique store, The Green Vase at 200 Nelson St. in Arroyo
Grande. The store resides in a historic 1886 house. The surrounding neighborhood has a Victorian feel that adds to the charm of her store. Inside the house, you will see a bit of everything she loves from antiques, to vintage clothing, textiles, repurposed items, furniture, paintings and vintage jewelry.
When asked what Connie loves most about her store she said, “I like to find unique pieces and style arrangements throughout the store. When customers stop to comment, it makes me smile.”

When Connie is not making something or hunting for treasures to fill her store, she equally loves to garden and travels often to visit her grandchildren.
