With the introduction of ProtoGel Quick-Cast, the time required for casting gels for protein separation has been

reduced from 2 hours to under 25 minutes, and the number of steps involved has been cut from 10 to only

3. With ProtoGel Quick-Cast, simply measure out the amount needed, add initiators and cast the gel. No

mixing, no multiple measurements, no need for a second casting to produce a stacking gel. Just initiate,

cast, and be ready to run in 20 minutes. With the reduced casting time, western blots can be finished

within a regular working day.(NDH)

ProtoBlue Safe The Best Performing Colloidal Stain - Detects as little as 5ng protein ProtoBlue Safe improves both the sensitivity and the universality of staining. ProtoBlue Safe

is less prone to high background caused by trace residual SDS in the gel. Costs Less than Regular Coomassie Laboratories typically spend twice as much per gel in the methanol and acetic acid for staining

and destaining than for ProtoBlue Safe (including ethanol cost). In addition, ProtoBlue Safeis much faster, more sensitive, and you can pour the used stain solution down the drain. Protein visualization is faster, safer, more sensitive and less-expensive with ProtoBlue Safe. Non hazardous Disposal.

Meat and Fish IndustriesThe increase in international trade in recent years, has made necessary the use of faster, moreefficient and more specific microbiologicaldiagnostic culture media for each individualindustry and each pathogen.

Meat and fish products are highly perishable. Thetype of microorganisms present is variable andvery much depends on the product. Although themuscle itself is virtually sterile, meat-basedprocessed foods are very susceptible tocontamination providing favorable conditions forgrowth of microorganisms that can causepoisoning and food-borne illness.

We can offer a wide range of specific culturemedia for the meat and fish industry.

Most important for this industry is the pathogenListeria monocytogenes. This gram-positivebacteria has been the cause of numerousoutbreaks of foodborne diseases in the lastdecade. Listeriosis is usually found in pregnantwomen, their fetuses and in people with immuneproblems; symptoms are commonly abortion, neonatal death, septicemia and meningitis, witha mortality rate exceeding 20%.

Listeria is usually found in most food, but thehighest rates are in meat, poultry and seafood. Itsurvives periods of cold storage and it grows attemperatures as low as 0°C. It also survives at highsalt concentrations for long periods of time and isrelatively resistant to dehydration.

Water & BeveragesNatural water supplies such as rivers and lakes andstreams contain sufficient nutrients to supportgrowth of various organisms. Microorganisms enterthe water supply in many different ways. In congestedcenters water supplies are polluted by domestic andindustrial waste. As a potential carrier of pathogenicmicroorganisms, water can endanger health and life.Drinking water is obtained from different sources.Various impurities may occur in these waters thathave to be removed before the water is supplied tothe public. To render the water safe for drinking ithas to be treated property.Proper sampling is essential to provide representativealiquots to the laboratory conducting the tests.Microorganisms are living organisms. In addition, when found in water, they are not a perfect solution, but a suspension with a degree of variability that isinherent to it. The presence and level of fecalcontamination is an important factor in assessing thequality of water bodies and the risk of infection posedto human health. The analysis of water samples to

detect Escherichia coli, which normally inhabits theintestinal tract of humans and other warm-bloodedanimals, provides an indication of this type ofcontamination.Other indicators of fecal contamination areEnterococci. Such microorganisms are particularlyimportant when the contamination occurred sometime ago and the less resistant coliform bacteria, including Escherichia coli, may have died by the timethe analysis is performed. Pseudomonas aeruginosais an opportunistic pathogen for humans that iscapable of growing in water with very low nutrientconcentrations. It is desirable that natural mineralwaters, spring waters, bottled waters and waters forhuman consumption are free of Pseudomonasaeruginosa. Sometimes, for reasons of public healththe presence of Pseudomonas in other types of watermay be investigated, including water in swimmingpools. For the identification of all these key pathogens in theanalysis of water we suggest the following media:Water in general:

Bakery industryWithin the broad spectrum of the food industry, one of the most commonly consumed dailyarticle is bread. Today, both industrial as well astraditional bakeries use additives to control thegrowth of bacteria and molds in their products, but to meet legal requirements and adhere tohygiene standards during preparation they mustalso test for microorganisms. The prior controlof raw materials and their control during thepreparation process is vital to obtaining a finalproduct free of microorganisms.

After baking, the environment makes an idealculture medium for the development airbornespores, so it is vitally important to treat thistype of product in its final format. This kind of

contamination is more likely to happen in springand early summer and in places of high dust orflour concentration. Bread fungi are aerobic andvegetative microorganisms, meaning they needoxygen to reproduce themselves, so it iscommon for fungi to proliferate first in the crust, which is the area most exposed to air inside thepackage.

For the identification of all these pathogens ofimportance in the safety of the bakery industry, there are several important culture media:

ISO 6579:2002 specifies a horizontal method for the detection of Salmonella, including Salmonella Typhi andSalmonella Paratyphi. It is applicable to products intended for human consumption and the feeding of animals, andto environmental samples in the area of food production and food handling. Everybody involved in these areasshould conform to this standard when testing for microbial contamination.

Processed FoodMicroorganisms can cause a variety of effects in foodproducts including spoilage which primarily affectsproduct quality, and food poisoning, which is generallycaused by pathogens, .

Bacteria can enter food products through differentroutes. In food processing, foodborne microbes can beintroduced from infected humans who handle the food,or by cross contamination from some other raw materialand/or the in-plant environment. For example, bacteriaand viruses can be introduced by the unwashed handsof food handlers who are themselves infected.

Product that is fully cooked can become crosscontaminated if it comes into contact with rawmaterial containing pathogens or with food contact

surfaces that are contaminated.

In the kitchen, microbes can be transferred from onefood to another by using the same knife, cutting boardor other utensil to prepare both without washing thesurface or utensil between.

The way that food is handled after it is contaminatedcan also make a difference in whether or not, anoutbreak occurs.

Culture media for Beer industry

Beer is not a very appropriate medium for thedevelopment of bacteria due to its characteristics, suchas the low quantity of available nutrients, the presenceof alcohol, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide, as wellas low conservation temperatures. Beer filtration andpasteurization phases also contribute to thestabilization of the product against microorganisms. The number of genera and species which usuallycontaminate it is limited. As is the case with wild yeasts, the contaminating bacteria cause turbidity andgenerate anomalous smells and bouquets. Lactic acidbacteria are the only Gram-positive ones that causeserious problems within beer-producing industries. Thefrequently found ones only belong to two genera:Lactobacillus and Pediococcus. Wild yeasts are alsofrequent contaminants in beer production.

Culture media specific for beer:

In order to guarantee a process free ofmicroorganisms, equipment and facilities should bekept in a perfect state of hygiene since contaminatingelements almost always locate themselves in tanks, pipes, hoses, etc. It is also necessary to subject allequipment and raw materials including water, malt, triturates, hops, etc., to these controls.

AGTC BioproductsDithiothreitol 22

Dithiothreitol (DTT) Cleland's Reagent

DTT is an unusually strong reducing agent, used extensively in organic reactions. Our DTT is producedto the highest standards possible (see attached technical specification) and with additionally extremelylow levels of Bromine and Lead. The synthesis we use produces a particularly odour reduced productmaking it highly suitable for commercial kit manufacture.

Some applications are:

As a reducing or "deprotecting" agent for thiolated DNA.

Reduction of disulfide bonds in  proteins.

Prevent intramolecular and intermolecular disulfide bonds from forming between cysteineresidues of proteins.

DTT can also be used as an oxidizing agent.

For larger sizes 100g-to kilo’s call us today to receive a free evaluation sample and a competitivequote:

Cat No Name PriceEC-601-25gm Dithiothreitol DTT, >98% purity, low odour £49EC-601-50g Dithiothreitol DTT, >98% purity, low odour £89

A common use of DTT is as a reducing or"deprotecting" agent for thiolated DNA. Theterminal sulphur atoms of thiolated DNA have atendency to form dimers in solution, especially inthe presence of oxygen. Dimerization greatlylowers the efficiency of subsequent couplingreactions such as DNA immobilization on gold inbiosensors. Typically DTT is mixed with a DNAsolution and allowed to react, and then is removedby filtration (for the solid catalyst) or bychromatography (for the liquid form). The DTTremoval procedure is often called "desalting."DTT is frequently used to reduce the disulfidebonds of proteins and, more generally, to preventintramolecular and intermolecular disulfide bondsfrom forming between cysteine residues ofproteins. However, even DTT cannot reduceburied (solvent-inaccessible) disulfide bonds, so

reduction of disulfide bonds is sometimes carriedout under denaturing conditions (e.g., at hightemperatures, or in the presence of a strongdenaturant such as 6 M guanidiniumhydrochloride, 8 M urea, or 1% sodiumdodecylsulfate). Conversely, the solvent exposureof different disulfide bonds can be assayed by theirrate of reduction in the presence of DTT.DTT can also be used as an oxidizing agent. Itsprincipal advantage is that effectively no mixed-disulfide species are populated, in contrast toother agents such as glutathione. In very rarecases, a DTT adduct may be formed, i.e., the twosulfur atoms of DTT may form disulfide bonds todifferent sulfur atoms; in such cases, DTT cannotcyclize since it has no remaining free thiols.
