    Description of Activities

    Preparation of Poultry House  /he oultr& House was cleaned and disin%ected da&s be%ore

    the arrial o% chic!s.

    Construction of rooder for !oun" Chic#s : Brooder was constructed using a *oable $artition consisting o% 2inc around the $eri*eter to se$arate the brooder %ro* the rest o% the

     $oultr& house. +ighting and heating was set u$ oer the centre o% the brooding area. +itter was

     $laced inside. lastics bags were used to coer the outer walls to !ee$ out cold draughts.

    Construction of $oothbath: A %ootbath with disin%ectant was *ade in %ront o% the $oultr&

    house to $reent in%ections with disease causing organis*s to enter the $oultr& house.

    Introduction of Chic#s to Poultry House: "hic!s were collected %ro* hatcher&- counted andins$ected %or disabilities then $laced in brooding area with a light source.

    %ana"ement of Litter in Poultry House: A%ter 3 wee!s- litter was continuall& turned and

    re$laced. ,et litter was re$laced with %resh ones. /he litter had a thic!ness o% 54 c* this

    absorbed dro$$ings and !e$t the chic!s o%% the cold ground.

    &ee#ly &ei"ht of Chic#ens: A%ter the 1st wee! an aerage weight o% chic!ens was ta!en eer&

    other wee! to establish $ro$er weight gain and e%%icient $roduction u$ to slaughtering.

    Slau"hterin" of Chic#ens: At # wee!s and da&s the chic!ens were slaughtered. Slaughteringwas done b& using a !ni%e to re*oe the head o% the chic!ens allowing it to drain %or a %ew*inutes. /he chic!ens were then re*oed and di$$ed in hot water. /he %eathers and guts werere*oed. "hic!ens were then $laced in cold water.

    Pac#a"in"- Grading and Sales o% "hic!ens: "hic!ens were re*oed %ro* the cold water and

    ins$ected. /he& were then $laced in bags with labels- weighed and sold to *e*bers o% the

    co**unit& including teachers.

    :eneral Comments<

    During the stages o% $roduction the chic!ens were alwa&s well %ed and water readil& aailable-

    this ensured a the brood was !e$t health&. Due to un%ortunate circu*stances *an&

    Conclusion<

    A $ro%it was obtained %ro* the $roduction o% oultr&. Good agricultural $ractices were adhered

    to $roducing a brood o% chic!ens which had *inor loss. Resources were used e%%ectiel& and .

    10 chic!s were bought but onl& 104 suried due to 13 birds su%%ering %ro* a li!el& cardiac

    arrest which could not be $reented. 104. /he& were bought at 895 $er chic! and sold at 8145 $er lb &ielding a $ro%it o% ;1.>.

    =ecommendations<

    "hic!ens should be housed under conditions in which natural ele*ents such as

    te*$erature dont a%%ect the* as *uch.

    A nurser& should be set u$ %or ill chic!ens where the& are %ed this could aoid casualties

    as so*eti*es ill chic!ens are tra*$led u$on b& bigger healthier ones and the& dont

    obtain %ood so the& die.
