Johan:SIBI has made a huge investment in our ability to do our job better. We’ve got unique resources at Katanning, where we are able to generate information under the current infrastructure that SIBI has invested in, and that makes a huge contribution on a national basis to the genetic improvement of our livestock.

Sarah: For us, it’s a site where we can run experiments that probably we can’t do in our usual facilities. We do a huge amount of work in collaboration with farmers on their commercial properties, which is fantastic, and we do have some animal house facilities at Murdoch University, but the Katanning Research Facility allows us to really extend the reach of what we might ordinarily be able to do.

Beth: It’s important that we’ve got a central resource that can carry out those measurements and report them back to producers without compromising our industry’s productivity.

Sarah: The tremendous thing for us has been about relationships – it’s been about building a base that we know we can start to build future projects on.

Even though SIBI is coming to a close, I think the fact that we’ve established those relationships – and we’ve established the fact that we can build this really valuable partnership in sharing resources such as assets and obviously people as well – I think that’s given us

a really fantastic base to build a vision on, going forward. I think that SIBI’s made a terrific contribution.

Johan:Now that SIBI has made these investments in the research station and the facilities there, we have really excellent facilities. We have world-class facilities now – there is no other place in the world that has the facilities we have, and we are very proud of that. That is the legacy SIBI has allowed us.

Having that facility and having that infrastructure now – and the resources – is a huge asset for the Western Australian sheep industry that will make a huge contribution in the future, for many years to come.
