    Breadfruit Festival

    St. Vincent

    August 2010

    131 August 2010

The breadfruit holds great historical importance to the people of St. Vincent and

the Grenadines. Each year the Breadfruit Festival is celebrated as part of

Vincentian Emancipation Month. In 1793 Captain Bligh brought this staple to the

shores of St. Vincent with the sole intent to feed the slaves. While, it is reported

that the slaves apparently did not take a liking to breadfruit their descendants are

now singing its praises, as too many it is referred to as the national dish

(depending on the person you talk to) be it roast breadfruit and jackfish or saltfish. It is found it their everyday language and is so much a part of the national

psyche. To cut down one's breadfruit tree is to take away their livelihood andpeople talk about getting a breadfruit box (coffin) if they can't afford one from

the funeral homes. Of course many a home has been constructed from the wood

gained from the tree which further reinforces the versatility of this plant.
