    The Government of Iceland under its Iceland Island Growth Initiative Fund is sponsoringestablishment of a training course in fish stock assessment, customized to the needs of theCaribbean and to be adopted formally for routine delivery within and by the region. The first phaseof the two week training from August 23- September 3rd, features a series of teaching lectures bystaff of the UNU-FTP staff, the CRFM Secretariat and UWI. The second phase will train National andRegional fishery scientists in key basic principles of statistics and fish stock assessment, while thethird phase use these experiences for guiding further course development and delivery within theregion and by regional personnel. The main objectives of the course are to: (1) establish a suitablyadapted training course in fish stock assessment to serve the needs of fish stock assessmentscientists in Caribbean States and formalize procedures for routine course delivery; (2) provide astrong foundation in basic key principles of statistics, sampling, and fish stock assessment and (3)develop and strengthen national and regional fishery scientists in fish stockAssessment.

    The Blue Marlin is one of Jamaica's favourite fish and is a renowned catch amongst localfishermen. Several local and international anglers participate in this Annual Blue MarlinTournament, which provides another opportunity to forge and strengthen linkages among theagriculture, natural resources and tourism sectors through eco/agro-tourism. Such linkages canprovide sustainable livelihood opportunities along the chain, especially for a number of small-medium size operators, with positive impacts on sustainable use of natural resources.

    Amerindian Heritage Month was officially declared in September 1995 by the Peoples ProgressiveParty in recognition of the need to celebrate Guyanas first people. The month commences withan Inter-faith church service at the Umana Yana on August 31 and culminates with a Heritagedinner and prize giving ceremony at the Georgetown Club, Camp St. on September 29.Amerindian crafts, clothing, food, drink etc will be on display at a weeklong cultural exhibition andextravaganza planned for the National Exhibition Complex, Sophia, at the Amerindian Village,giving rural artisans and other small producers an opportunity to gain exposure and income. TheAmerindian community is an important part of the agriculture landscape in Guyana, as well as inneighbouring Suriname, and offers additional opportunities to expand agriculture through linkageswith heritage tourism.

    The Department of Marine Resources through its Food Safety and Technology Laboratories iscoordinating a series of technical workshops. This Condiments (Pepper sauces, salad dressing,chutneys and pickles) workshop is designed to provide scientific information, demonstrate properprocessing procedures, in-house quality control procedures and issues regarding food safety,Good Manufacturing Practices and personnel hygiene. The workshop will further stimulate theinterest of the small and cottage entrepreneurs and the potential processors. Thus, by assistingprocessors with the knowledge that provides Bahamians with food that is competitive, nutritious,safe and wholesome. This event takes place at the Food Safety and Technology Laboratory onGladstone Road at the Gladstone Road Agriculture Centre (GRAC); from 9:00am-3:00pm.     This public lecture is being hosted by The Cropper Foundation, in collaboration with The Ministry ofHousing and the Environment and the Faculty of Science and Agriculture, UWI, St. AugustineCampus at 6:30 p.m. The lecture will be delivered by Mervyn Claxton. The Cropper Foundation(TCF) is a not-for-profit organization established in August 2000 in Trinidad & Tobago. The conceptof the Foundation is to act as a framework mechanism for networking people, dialogue andresources across various sectors of the society for the public good and to influence, participateand contribute to Sustainable Development policy and practice locally, for the Caribbeanregion, and globally. In October 2001 The TCF catalyzed a professional group The SustainableDevelopment Network which seeks to influence the course and content of policy, planning andimplementation of national activities towards a form of development that is sustainable andequitable.

    This meeting of the organized by the Bahamas National Youth Council (BNYC) aims to coordinatethe festivities of the main event celebrated on the 30th September and 2nd October, 2010. BNYC isthe non-governmental, non-partisan and non-political umbrella body of youth organizations inBarbados, which acts as a representative body on behalf of youth organizations and the youthpopulation at large. It seeks to empower active youth participation in the shaping and mouldingof their society, including involvement agriculture. Partners and supporters are encouraged tocontribute proposed activities and to join the organizing team in launching the initiative to fusetogether ideas and plans from youth of different heritage into one culture of the Caribbean.
