Message from the Union Minister of Hotels and Tourism

The Government of the Republic of Union of Myanmar has recognized the tourism sector’s potential to bring about economic growth and employment creation. This is evident from the creation of the Central Committee for the Development of National Tourism Industry. It is further supported by tourism’s positioning as one of the 7 priority areas in the country’s New Growth Path. Moreover, Ministry of Commerce has drafted the National Export Strategy with the assistance of Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and the International Trade Centre (ITC), Technical Agency of World Trade Organization, and it has identified the tourism sector as one of the three key areas expected to contribute to the development of economy.

One of the significant achievements of our government is tourism development due to the committed efforts of the Ministry of Hotels & Tourism together with the strong support of the relevant ministries and private sector organization such as Myanmar Tourism Federation. In term of tourist arrivals, Myanmar received 2.04 million visitors in 2013, up 93% over 2012. Foreign exchange earnings totaled USD 926 million, an increase of 73.4%. All this income was distributed widely across the country, helping to create more direct and indirect jobs in many occupational fields. We expect that the international arrivals can reach up to 3 million at the end of this year.

The Myanmar Tourism Master Plan 2013-2020 was approved with the support of ADB and Norwegian Government. The Government of Myanmar is implementing some projects in cooperation with the UNWTO, JICA, ADB, Hanns Seidel and Lux Development. Emphasis is being placed on raising investment in the tourism industry to ensure the development of tourism infrastructure, human resources development and service quality improvement. At the same time Myanmar is adopting and practicing “Responsible Tourism Policy “to ensure conservation and preservation of heritage attractions and sustainable development of tourism industry. It is important to develop plans and strategies in order to efficiently use our recourses for sustainable development of tourism in Myanmar.

The current industry performance is encouraging, although it does not mean that we should be complacent and rest on our laurels. Myanmar’s tourism resources have much greater potential than we can imagine. We recognize, though, that we will only be able to fulfill that potential if we adopt a coordinated strategic approach. I am satisfied that we have achieved the first step in that direction, with this Myanmar Tourism Master Plan setting out our collective vision. This collective vision, namely to use to make Myanmar a better place to live in, creating more employment and greater business opportunities for all our people, and contributing to the conservation of our natural and cultural heritage, will carry the tourism sector to a higher level of development in the future. It aims to inspire and accelerate the responsible growth of tourism for the next seven years.

In the last 14 years that the Myanmar Tourism Marketing (formerly Myanmar Marketing Committee) has been responsible for marketing Myanmar as a tourism destination, and its members have overcome many obstacles and collectively maintained Myanmar’s brand image at the international level. This does not happen by chance, but through year after year of hard work, experience, professionalism, and strong partnerships and networking. I believe that tourism in this country will go from strength to strength, continuing to provide visitors with unique and pleasantly unforgettable experiences, and consistently facilitating more job creation and economic growth. This, however, will require a shift in the way we do things, in line with the new strategic approaches set out in Myanmar Tourism Master Plan.

We are eternally grateful for the strong support from the private sector and all our supporters who have assisted us in achieving our goals.

H.E. U Htay AungUnion Minister for Hotels and Tourism

Message from the Chairman ofMyanmar Tourism Federation

Mingalabar! It is indeed my pleasure to welcome and greet all the members of Myanmar Tourism Marketing Association and our colleagues in the tourism industry.

In response to the political and economic reforms undertaken by the Government of Myanmar, rapid progresses and changes could be seen in the tourism sector within the last few years. We have prioritized tourism in the Framework for Economic and Social Reforms and the private sector development reform is in the fourth phase of reform strategies of the Government which evidently shows the growth of the tourism sector playing importance in the overall strength of the economic development of Myanmar.

The success will rely on full engagement of all stakeholders, development of small and medium enterprises and the national and foreign investments. Tourism as a priority sector of Myanmar as tourism could contribute creation of new jobs directly and indirectly for different income levels, could encourage the development of small and medium enterprises where the population will perceive the benefits of democracy and reforms and participate in the inclusive economic growth. In recognition of the economic growth, it requires tremendous efforts by all members of the Myanmar society and by the international community. In this regards, Myanmar Tourism Federation and its (11) tourism related associations have been cooperating with the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism for the formulation of relevant tourism policies, Tourism Master Plan and as a further step to implement the tourism development projects.

Myanmar has a wide range of natural, cultural and historical heritages. Now our tangible and intangible assets are invaluable for the development of tourism. Myanmar must convert the strength into our competitive advantages and create the attractive tourism products for the international and domestic visitors. It is the best time and opportunity to promote our country as a preferred tourism destination and we have opened our doors to welcome the visitors and to experience the unique features of Myanmar.

The efforts of the individual stakeholders, tourism related businesses, support from state and regional government and private sector organizations become more and more important for the success of our tourism industry.

We synergize our diversity for a better and prosperous future of our industry. I wish you all the best of luck for the future!

Yours sincerely,

U Yan WinChairmanMyanmar Tourism Federation

Message from the Chairman ofMyanmar Tourism MarketingFor the year 2013/2014

It is an honour for me to present the Annual Report of Myanmar Tourism Marketing for the year 2013/14 on behalf of the Executive Committee and it is indeed a great pleasure for the Executive Committee to work for the members in order to promote Myanmar as a tourist destination.

As the marketing arm of Myanmar Tourism Federation, Myanmar Tourism Marketing has facilitated and participated at international travel trade shows for 2013/14 such as Thailand Travel Mart Plus 2013, International Travel EXPO – HoChiMinh City 2013, World Travel Market 2013, ASEAN Tourism Forum 2014 in Malaysia and International Tourism Boerse Berlin 2014.

Moreover, we have resumed the targeting to Japanese Market as we have seen the potential of the increased visitors and thus MTM organised the participation at JATA Travel Showcase 2013 together with the partners in tourism and are planning yet another presence at Tokyo Big Sight again this year. We also organised the press briefing at ITB Berlin 2014 and disseminated the update information and status of tourism in Myanmar to the travel media.

To be able to prosecute the promotional activities of Myanmar Tourism Marketing, we also organised our traditional annual fund raising event, namely The Annual Grand Ball and The Annual Golf Tournament. By taking this opportunity, we would like to express our thanks to the supporting companies and industry colleagues who sponsored both in cash and in kind towards the successful events.

Myanmar Tourism Marketing is working under the umbrella of Myanmar Tourism Federation to implement the marketing activities as outlined in the Myanmar Tourism Master Plan and draft the report to acquire the promotional funds from the state budget, in subsidy for the travel trade shows and other marketing activities.

We also recognise the needs of capacity development in the tourism industry to deliver the satisfaction of the tourists. Thus, we have organised a 2-Day training program on customer service and presentation skill in collaboration with Pacific Asia Travel Association from 9th to 10th June, 2014.

During the ASEAN TOURISM FORUM 2014 in Kuching, Malaysia, Myanmar received the flag of ASEAN tourism forum to be held in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar in 2015. This will be the very first ever International travel trade show in Myanmar and we believe that the tourism industry from Myanmar will make the most of it and would like to urge everyone to take part in this event. Let us show the world that Myanmar is a better place to live in and visit!

We would like to thank all our valuable members for their support, Ministry of Hotels & Tourism and Myanmar Tourism Federation for providing the necessary guidance and support, and the last but not the least to UMTA, MHA and all the other tourism related associations for their collaboration in developing the tourism in Myanmar together with us.
