45 years of Limousin Pride!

The CLA is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2014.

To mark this milestone, we launched the “45 Years of Lim-ousin Pride” campaign.

We have been welcoming photos of any past or

present endeavors that repre-sent displaying Canadian Lim-ousin Pride such as farm signs, apparels, trade show booth, so-cial media postings etc.

Here’s a sample of what has been received to date.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Bill Campbell Complete report was included in the AGM booklet on page 11 for members to review.

• It is quite an achievement for the Limousin breed to be hosting its 44th Annual General Meeting

• 2012 challenging year from commodity prices to weather challenges• Show animals have had a strong presence in Supreme competitions.

Congratulations to all who have dominated all breed events and jackpots.• The “Spotlight on Limousin” forums in Ontario and Alberta were a revealing and

rewarding process. It allowed for better understanding of our place in the industry and what the next steps should entail; such as the need for communication, education of our producers, making the best of tools such as BIXS to name a few.

Bill thanked the membership and the CLA staff for a wonderful six year experience on the Board.

Moved by Bill Campbell, to adopt the President’s report as presented Second, Mary Hertz

FINANCIAL REVIEW ENGAGEMENT REPORT – Terry HepperComplete report was included in the AGM booklet from page 12 to 21 for members to review.

• An engagement review was conducted by Kenway Mack Slusarchuk Stewart.• With income somewhat down, and the number of projects and activities

significantly higher, the bottom line of 2012 shows a deficit.• Whole Herd Enrollment numbers have been declining mostly due to the general

shrinkage of the cattle industry. The few dispersals that have taken place in recent years, resulted in Limousin females going into commercial herds and no longer available for enrollment.

Moved by Terry Hepper, to adopt the Reviewed Financial Statements as presentedSecond, Wayne Burgess

BREED IMPROVEMENT REPORT – Kelly YorgaComplete report was included in the AGM booklet from page 23 to 29 for members to review.

• The CLA is responsible for crunching numbers that members provide, but the true essence of breed improvement is when every breeder do their very best to make their cattle better from year to year and addressing the demand of their customers.

• Kelly urged the membership to familiarize themselves with the current technologies such as SNP. Watch for linked videos on the CLA website.

• Genomics enhanced EPD’s is a hot topic at the Board level. This information is only useful when there is phenotype data to validate its value. There is more need for performance information today than ever before.

• Kelly urged the membership to submit docility scores. The Limousin breed is still battling the bad temperament image, even though we know that the breed has improved that trait immensely.

• Actual carcass data is still rewarded with a rebate. It is needed to improve the accuracy of genomics testing.

• The CLA will be requesting a high density panel on all new AI bulls in order to contribute a greater amount of information into the genomics enhanced EPD’s. A 50K panel or higher such as the Igenity Limousin Profiler will be required.

• BIXS data is for producer’s own use at this time and not automatically download into our pool of information used for genetic evaluations. Our exchange with BIXS is one way: from CLA registry system to BIXS only. However, carcass data obtained from BIXS may be considered into EPD’s if the contemporary group and other essential factors are provided. Breeders may share their results with the CLA for consideration.

• Kelly introduced the formation of a Commercial Liaison Committee which will be led by Tim Andrew. Details in “new business”.

• We encourage all bull sellers to contact their buyers and encourage them to list their commercial calves for sale. The CLA will facilitate communication between buyers and sellers. The list of buyers will remain anonymous.

Moved by Kelly Yorga, to adopt the breed improvement report as presentedSecond, Ian Hamilton

CARRIEDJUNIOR COMMITTEE REPORT – Terry HepperComplete report was included in the AGM booklet on page 30 for members to review.

• The 2012 Junior Conference took place in Olds, Alberta under the Summer Synergy umbrella with participants from five provinces. Consequently both Limousin champions (purebred and commercial) competed against all other breeds at the Calgary Stampede and won the Supreme titles.

• Four applied for scholarships of $250 were handed to junior members. The same program is offered again this year with an October 1, 2013 deadline.

• The junior board members also benefit from some funding to cover their travel expense to the National Conference.

• T Bar Invitational tournament has been a wonderful source of income for the CJLA. Thank you to Ted and his team.

• The 2014 Junior Conference will be held at the Prairieland Exhibition in Saskatoon July 24-26.

Moved by Terry Hepper to adopt the Junior Committee report as presentedSecond, Mark Porter

NATIONAL SHOW & SALE COMMITTEE – Jim Richmond Complete report was included in the AGM booklet on page 31 for members to review.

• The 2013 National Events are set for November 6-8 at Farmfair in Edmonton, Alberta. We look forward to having Casey Fanta as our open show judge. There will also be a pen show for bulls and females. The Last Man Standing competition is in the works.

• The National committee is composed of Scott Bodell (Chair), Carriann Johnson, Barb Miller, Scott Payne, Mark Porter and Jim Richmond. Jim assumes the liaison between the CLA board and the show committee.

• The National Sale will be incorporated into the Headliner All Breed Sale. Bouchard Livestock is managing the sale.

• Masterfeeds has been a wonderful partner for our Show Cattle of the Year program. We thank them for their support.

• The 2014 National Show and Sale will take place at Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan.

President’sReport

Brian Lee

I would like to thank everyone for attending the 45th annual

meeting here in Saskatoon and also thank the Saskatchewan ju-niors for hosting this first class event. It takes the work of a lot of volunteers to host such an event and to each one of them we appreciate their valuable time and the effort that has gone into this.

I was very honoured to have been chosen by my fellow

board members to sit as your president and grateful for the support that they have all shown me over the past year.

Every year brings a lot of challenges in the cattle in-

dustry and this year is no ex-ception. The challenges this year are more positive than negative which is really nice for a change. Let’s look at some of the positives, the biggest being the price. No matter what area of the industry new highs are established almost on a weekly basis. These prices however, do present some challenges for the producers. The biggest of which is trying to market their cattle at the most opportune time to receive the best value.

When we market our prod-uct we as producers need

to change our mind-set and be proud of our breed and pro-mote that whenever we can. We may not be the most popular breed, but people are taking notice and they are asking for our breed specifically in many different sectors of this indus-try. Stand up and be proud and remind those people who have strayed from our breed that we as breeders are listening and making improvements to bet-ter our breed and therefore our product.

The cattle industry is experi-encing new inventory lows

in all breeds. Use this time as a positive and promote our breed. Don’t sit on the side-lines and hope it will happen. Get in-volved. There are many ways you can do this and for all those who already take advantage of any situation to talk about our breed it never goes unnoticed and I thank you. Among those who get involved are my fellow board members. Each and ev-ery one contributes to the CLA well-being and has the best in-terest of the breed at heart.

In closing I would once again like to thank our juniors. A

lot of hard work has gone into this event and I wish them all the best of luck. These juniors are our future. Both in our breed and in agriculture. Sup-port them whenever you can and be proud to be a Limousin breeder.

Breed Improvement

Report

Kelly Yorga

The main focus of Breed Improvement over the

last twelve months has been on the completion of the many projects on the go. For the most part, the work is being done in-house and consequently we have reduced our investment in breed improvement consul-tant fees. We use the services of RAK Genetics only when nec-essary.

DNA Transition and Laboratory Services

It was a significant under-taking to transition the

entire DNA bank of active ani-mals from microsatellite to SNP technology. Fortunately gener-ous funding from ALMA and Ag Canada lighted the financial burden of it. The grant was also extended into 2014 to help with the completion of the project. While the CLA Staff still comes across Limousin animals who have not been SNP’ed yet, the majority has been done. Conse-quently, new policies were put in place by the CLA Board with regards to DNA:

• Animals needing SNP transition and not previous-ly flagged to the CLA staff, are subject to the normal DNA charge.

• Animals needing par-entage verification, but whose parent(s) cannot be transi-tioned to SNP will require dou-ble testing. The DNA fees in this scenario is $45 instead of the regular $30 charge.

In January 2014, The Sas-katchewan Research Coun-

cil (SRC) sold their livestock division laboratory named GenServe to Quantum Genetix, a private company also located in Saskatoon. The change has brought some new challenges and interrupted service to our members. Our staff is work-ing with them to re-establish a more acceptable turnaround time.

Genomics Research and Genetic Evaluations

The two research projects are now completed and

genotypes are being used for the creation of North American formulas in the development of Genomic Enhanced Expected Progeny Differences or GE-EPD’s. You may have noticed that some animals in the NALF registry have GE-EPD’s. We hope to be able to offer the same in the foreseeable future. Anne is now a member of the NALF Performance Committee al-lowing her to work closely with them for a seamless presenta-tion of the genetic evaluations.

In the meantime, all breed-ers interested in receiving

GE-EPD’s on their animals are encouraged to order an Igenity Limousin Specific Profile. That high density panel will be the catalyst to the enhancement once we are ready to receive the results. Make note of the change regarding the forwarding of samples for Igenity tests – they are now to be sent to Delta Ge-nomics in Edmonton, AB (see next page).

Lastly, the CLA in part-nership with NALF has

conducted a multi-breed eval-uation trial. The results are still under analysis, but we target a comprehensive release later in 2014.

New additions to the CLA website

The CLA has made a few changes to the animal

pages. Percentage animals now show with “orange” tables while purebred animals remain in green. You will also notice that ultrasound data is now posted.

It is important to remember that in the age of genotype,

phenotype is king. Gathering data on your cattle is impera-tive in the optimized utilization of technology. Improving the Limousin breed in Canada be-gins at your place.

“...in the age of genotype, phenotype is king. ”

Parentage Verification:

Why? The CLA bylaws and rules, require DNA tests for the following:• Sire verification for all walking

bulls• Sire verification for donor cows• Parent verification for all AI sires

(public sales of semen AND in-herd use semen)

• Parent verification for all embryo calves and Fullblood animals

What do I send? A hair sample of 40-50 follicles along with a form that the CLA will generate for you.

Where? GenServe Laboratories Inc.

101 - 110 Research Drive, Saskatoon, Sk S7N 3R3

When? At least 8 weeks before needing results. With the transition to SNP, our lab has been very busy and experiencing some delays.

What else?We are now close to being done with the conversion of our DNA bank to SNP. SNP is a state-of-the-art DNA testing method that is preferred around the world. We were able to obtain some funding to convert animals in our his-torical bank. Once the funding has run out, any leftover animals whose DNA on file was not flagged to the CLA, the conversion will be at the expense of the CLA member.

We have come across some animals whose sample was not suitable for con-version (not enough hair follicles in most cases). The progeny of animals that cannot be converted to SNP, but needing parentage verification, will be subject to “Double Testing”. Double testing means that we have to run a first test to verify the parents under the old method (microsatellite) as there is no other option. Then we run a second test by SNP so this new animal is on par with the rest of the population with re-sults by the “new test” or SNP. The cost for this scenario is $45 instead of $30.

Homozygous Tests (polled and/or Color)

Who Provides These Tests? The main provider of these Igenity tests, is GeneSeek in Nebraska, U.S. The CLA is NOT involved as a third party; meaning we do not provide the forms or take your payment or receive the results. However, as a member service, the proper form is posted on our web-site (under DNA) for you to download and print.

What do I send? A hair sample of 40-50 follicles is pre-ferred, along with a proper form that you can download on the CLA website or at: www.igenity.com GeneSeek also prefers that you use their hair cards to organize the sample. They also offer a blood card that requires a few drops of blood. These cards can be obtained by contacting them directly.

Where do I send the samples? Delta Genomics Lab in Edmonton is a gathering place for Canadian animal samples, and then they are shipped to the GeneSeek in Nebraska once a week. In some cases, the DNA is extracted di-rectly at Delta, then an electronic file is sent to GeneSeek for interpretation of the results.

Why can I not send the samples to Nebraska myself?

Because Delta Genomics in Edmonton has the proper permit to ship animal material to the U.S. where the testing is done. If you mail on your own, the samples can be confiscated at the bor-der and never reach GeneSeek. How-ever, you can mail the sample directly to GeneSeek within the United States if that is an option. Otherwise, we recom-mend that you send to:

Delta GenomicsRoom 4244 TEC Centre

Enterprise Square10230 Jasper Ave

Edmonton, AB T5J 4P6

When? At least 8 weeks before needing results.

What else?Consider ordering a High Density Lim-ousin Profiler. The information from a High Density breed specific profiler will be useful in the very near future when Genomic Enhanced EPD’s are part of the Canadian Limousin genetic evalu-ations.

Leptin Test

What is it? Leptin affects appetite and metabolism. Breeders looking to improve their herd genetics for carcass quality and efficiency can select for “TT” sires. Some bull buyers seek TT bulls for their commercial op-eration. More information at www.quantumgenetix.com

Who does the test?

Quantum Genetix (GenServe Laboratories Inc.)101-110 Research Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7N 3R3

DO NOT ORDER PARENTAGE veri-fication from GeneSeek. They are not the official lab of the Canadian Lim-ousin Association.

If you need a Parentage Verification DNA test and also wish to get homo-zygous tests/HD profiler for the same animal.

1) You must send one sample to Gen-Serve with the CLA issued form for Par-entage verification.

2) And one Igenity form (indicating which tests you want to order from them and payment information) with a hair sample to Delta Genomics. Delta will either forward your sample to GeneSeek in Nebraska or extract DNA at their lab.

CongratulationsElite Herds!

The Elite Herd Program aims at identifying the herds that do total

reporting of information for their an-imals and truly contribute to the ad-vancement of the Limousin breed.

Elite Herd Awards are divided in 4 categories:

• Platinum: herds that submit their BW, CE, WW, Docility, YW, SC , Ultra sound or carcass

• Gold: herds that submit their BW, CE, WW, YW and docility

• Silver: herds that submit BW, CE and WW

• Bronze: herd on Whole Herd Enrolment

CongratulationsElite Dams!

The Elite Dam award was revamped in 2010. It was identified that the traits

of importance in terms of high producing cows were birth weight, weaning weight, milk production and docility. The ideal female is described as one that calves ev-ery year without assistance, weans a big calf thanks to her high milk production and possesses a temperament that makes her pleasant to work with. This is a first attempt at rewarding the Limousin cows that fit that profile under modern mea-surements such as EPD’s.At their December 2012 meeting, the board of directors of the CLA decided to make the Elite Status a permanent desig-nation.

Once a Limousin cow is sesignated Elite or Super Elite, that recognition stays with her forever.• All Fullblood, Purebred, or per-

centage registered Limousin fe-males on Whole Herd Enrolment, the year of Elite designation, are eligible.

• Must have raised at least 4 calves in the last 6 consecutive years. If the female raised 6 calves in 6 years, she receives the "Super Elite" status.

• Must have above breed average EPD for Weaning Weight, Milk and Docility.

• Must have below breed average EPD for Birth Weight.

Chairman

At the time of this writing, there has never been a

more exceptional time to be in the cattle business. Aside from localized forage shortage, the opportunities for profits seem endless.

Our fledgling Commer-cial Liaison Committee

is up and running. This group has been developed as a result of the Spotlight on Limousin forum process. Their role is to assist the CLA Board of Direc-tors in developing programs to promote the Limousin breed within the chain of beef pro-duction. Their first conference call took place in the Fall of 2013.

To date the group has rec-ommended two projects:

1) Commercial Industry Award that recognizes groups or individuals i.e. auction mar-kets, feeders, packers, research-ers or any other industry player that have shown commitment to the breed and tell our story of profit.

2) A color coded RFID/CCIA Tag Program that will identify feeder calves of Limou-sin genetics. This will allow all sectors of the beef value chain to more easily identify the qual-ity of Limousin cattle within the industry.

Stay tuned as talks are on-going to fine tune this op-

portunity.

As our group works to de-velop new methods of

enhancing the Limousin mes-sage, we cannot forget the tools already in place. The Calf Listing Service is an underutilised free service. It allows bull sellers to reconnect wth their clients and offer them help merchendizin-ng their calves. The CLA web-site is frequently visited by buy-ers looking to place thousands of commercial Limousin calves. Calf listings are also promoted on social media sites including Facebook and Twitter. The CLA office also keeps an ongoing list of Limousin calf buyers. These folks are contacted via a mass email when Limousin calves are available. Our commercial producers deserve to know and take advantage of this opportu-nity for greater promotion of their animals for sale.

As we near the top of the cattle cycle, we have an

excellent opportunity to involve

ourselves in our customers’ success. Recognizing how busy everyone is during the Fall calf run, our bull buyers appreci-ate our involvement in heir big day. Showing up is the greatest gesture. Arranging for com-plimentary coffee and donuts, hanging a breed promotional banner, or recognition awards to the high selling contribu-tors or buyers; all go a long way to elevate their calf sale as an “event”. These efforts positively elevate our breed and yourself as a seedstock producer.

To quote Lee Wilson of Miller/Wilson Angus,

one of the leading showman, breeders and marketers in our country: “The best time to make your next sale is on your client’s pay day”. I would like to challenge you to become more involved in your customers’ success.

I would like to thank the committee members for

their time. We will be calling on them again in the very near future for their guidance and ideas. My appreciation also goes to Anne Brunet-Burgess, our CLA General Manager for nurturing our vision of a great-er market share for the Limou-sin breed

Junior Limousin Association Report

Eric Boon

The skills gained from be-ing active in the Canadi-

an Junior Limousin Association are evident as you look at past members currently still active promoting their own farm or those that have chosen differ-ent career paths. We should be proud that our very own junior members are some of the most talented and respected young cattleman and are making a very positive IMPACT within the cattle industry

The 2013 edition of the conference took place in

Neepawa, Manitoba where it was combined with the Manito-ba Youth Beef Round-Up Show. Although numbers were slight-ly down we had 14 participants from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. With a variety of seasoned older members and then the first CJLA conference for some others it was a great show to see what this junior program is about, TEAM-WORK! Being combined with an all-breed junior show it was very rewarding to see our Lim-ousin juniors be so successful in the individual and team events.

Wrapping up the show in Neepawa was the

donation from the TBar Invi-tational Golf Tournament. This annual source of income for the CJLA is greatly appreciated. We cannot thank the TBar crew enough for all they do towards junior programs!

The CJLA awarded 6 ap-plied for scholarships

this year. A total of 6 juniors applied and the CJLA board de-cided to award all of them this year. Congratulations to Cam-eron Olson, Mark Lustig, Melis-sa McKinnon, Dillion Hunter, Ryley Bielecki and Tessa Nybo!

Once again juniors will come together for their

annual CJLA Conference in Saskatoon, SK from July 24-26.The juniors will have a busy few days practicing skills that can be applied to everyday life as they continue on with their ed-ucation and careers.

I look forward to working with this great CJLA board

as we move into the next year. As an association we hope to increase awareness of the Ju-nior Limousin events, successes and the IMPACT that this great breed can have on junior mem-bers!

On behalf of the CLA, I would like to thank the

group of volunteers who put on a fabulous National Show in Edmonton last fall. The quality of cattle and hospitality were second to none. Appreciation also goes to our judge Casey Fanta, our many sponsors and of course the exhibitors who made it a success.

The 2013 National Sale was part of the multi-breed

Headerliner Sale. The eight live Limousin lots averaged $4656 and one semen lot brought $5100.

I am pleased to announce that Masterfeeds has renewed its

commitment with the CLA for

the Limousin Show Cattle of Year Awards for an additional three years. We are so fortunate to have Masterfeeds as our partner in this program. Walt Taylor, Dealer Business Manager is always on-site at Agribition to present the awards. Make sure to look him up and thank him for his contribution and support.

The National Committee is mainly responsible for

selecting the national judge, the national sale management and advising on the Masterfeeds Show Cattle of the Year Program. At their March conference call, they made two changes to the program,

effective for 2014: 1. The designated Canadian

National Show will be receiving points at the “100 head+” level, regardless of the number of entries;

2. The National Junior Show is a possible point qualifier. See CLA website for details and restrictions.

The 2014 events will be at Agribition in Regina, SK.

Details can be found in the Saskatchewan report on page 41 or on the CLA website.

I look forward to seeing you in Regina in November. The

show is on the 27th and the sale on the 28th.

2013 Award of Distinction

Leone was a farm girl plain and simple. Her love of

nature and animals was a perfect fit. The routine of morning chores taught her a discipline that would serve her well later in life. She learnt early in life that the animals need to be fed and the school bus still arrives early. She never really left the farm, following the family tradition of showing cattle, attending sales, meetings and always volunteering to help at any level. People at Limousin functions always looked forward to Karwandy’s attending and looked for the smiles and support that they offered, especially Leone.

Leone and her husband David ran a purebred limo

herd of around 80 head. This herd of select Purebred and Full Blood animals was started by Leone’s family back in the early 70’s. Some of these animals were imported from France and stayed in their herd for many years. Leone’s love and care of animals was evident by her first heifer “Shanny” who lived for 22 years and produced 23 calves.

Leone was active on all levels showing cattle at

numerous shows and sales.

They participated for many years in an annual bull sale with Andersons and Bohrsons. She was a long time member of the Saskatchewan Limousin Association and served on many committees. The standing joke was that she and Terry seemed to get re-cycled every few years. Nothing was too much for her and when something needed to be done you could always depend on Leone.

Leone served as a director on the CLA Board and was a

founding committee member of the Canadian Jr. Limousin Conference in Lloydminster. Her most recent duties were Secretary Treasurer of the SLA and a board member.

LeoneKarwandy-Hagel

Leone Karwandy-Hagel is the 2013 CLA Award of Distinction recipient.Presented at the Canadian Western Agribition by CLA director Kelly Yorga.

Most recently, David and Leone ran a small butcher

shop in their yard. They did some custom butchering for neighbours and family and in Leones’ words “this is where the Limo’s really shine.” They could tell you which animal belonged to the carcass breed.

Leone has many friends in the livestock business and

will be truly missed. The 2013 Agribition Show has been dedicated to her and she is the recipient of the 2013 CLA Award of Distinction.

Thank You Leone from all of us.

Special Projectwith theCattlemenMagazine

At the 2013 Annual General Meeting, it was mentioned that not all beef producers receive the Cattlemen Magazine, causing a bit of concern since the only CLA print advertising is in that publication.

To address the issue, the CLA approached the Cattlemen for a joint subscription recruiting effort. We shared our commercial mailing list with them, and in return they inserted the above pictured offer to everyone on our mailing list.

There was no cost to the CLA for this endeavor. 31

On behalf of the membership and staff at the Canadian Beef Breeds Council

(CBBC), we are pleased to present our briefing report to the Canadian Limousin Association (CLA).

The Council (CBBC) also extends its sincere appreciation to the Federal Government of Canada (through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada), the Provincial Government of Alberta through the Legacy fund, Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (AARD) and the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA), and the Government of Saskatchewan. Without their continued support we would not be able to complete many of the activities that have greatly benefited the Canadian purebred beef industry.

The objective of CBBC is to ensure representation for the Canadian purebred beef cattle sector both domestically and internationally. The Council will continue to engage both industry and government to ensure that Canadian beef cattle genetics are recognized for the true value that they contribute to the beef production chain. As the recognized representative for the seedstock sector, CBBC’s focus plays out in four main areas.

A focus on international market development...

In its ongoing efforts, CBBC has developed a three year international market development strategy where we are entering the second year. This comprehensive strategic marketing plan for the organization was developed through consultation and planning with the membership to establish goals and priorities export markets.

The 2014/15 marketing plan identifies three key focuses; products and services; messaging; and priority markets. The priority markets are further defined as traditional markets, existing markets, new markets and emerging markets. Together these various elements comprise the 2014/15 International Marketing Plan for CBBC and its membership.

A focus on l e a d e r s h i p and collabo-ration…

A n o t h e r priority for the Council is ongoing collaboration with the Canadian C a t t l e m e n ’ s A s s o c i a t i o n , Canada Beef Inc (CBI), Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), the National Cattle Feeders A s s o c i a t i o n (NCFA), Livestock Gentec and other beef focused organizations.

M o s t o r g a n i z a t i o n s recognize the i m p o r t a n c e of collaboration in working toward achieving goals that lead to a sustainable and profitable beef production chain across Canada. In essence, the purebred beef cattle sector in Canada is the genetic foundation for beef cattle production. The genetics we select significantly impact the each link further on in the production chain. This importance is also recognized in international markets as well as by other beef trading nations around the world. Regardless of the product being exported, a supply chain that works together is of fundamental importance to success of the entire industry. Further evidence of this importance is again recognized in the strategic marketing plan of the beef cattle industry.

A focus on domestic market de-velopment

A strong domestic cattle market is incredibly important for a number of reasons. It is the largest and most consistent market for our product. The commercial cattle industry has found value in purebred genetics for decades as evident in the number of purebred

bulls sold into commercial herds year after year. As purebred producers we need to continue providing value in the registration paper and in transferring ownership in a timely fashion. We need to communicate with the commercial cattlemen to understand their needs as well as help them understand the value of purebred cattle.

A focus on genetic improve-ment…

The Council recognizes that value can be created and maintained through the application of leading edge technology. CBBC is committed to working with industry organizations, technology companies, producers, and academia. Through these networks we aim to ensure opportunities are created to ensure Canadian producers have access to new technology and maintain our position as having the best beef cattle genetics in the world.

We are pleased to have assisted in coordinating funding for various activities that the Canadian Limousin Association has conducted including preparation of promotional materials, hosting incoming delegates at Farmfair, attendance at National Western Stock Show and the Beef Improvement Federation conference. The CBBC is appreciative of the opportunity to share its briefing report to the Canadian Limousin Association.

The Canadian Limousin Association is very fortunate to have access to financial assistance for international endeavors and we also work closely with events (Farmfair and Agribition) that offer incentives to invite

international guests. In 2013, having Farmfair and Agribition back to back presented some challenges

for the exhibitors, but at the same time the tight schedule offered opportunities to our visitors. Among them, Jenny and Brent Evans and Nathan O’Sullivan from Australia attended both events and were able to include some herd visits in between.

Traditionally Agribition falls at the same time as the American Thanksgiving, making it difficult for our neighbors to the South to attend. Again the 2013 temporary changes allowed for more American visitors to make the trip to Regina. Among them, we were very pleased to welcome NALF’s President at the time, Mr. Bob Mitchell.

Swedish Limousin breeder Anita Persson and her children Louise and Elias visited the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Pcitured with CLA president Brian Lee.

Dylan Pintaud from France (right) spent one month at Andrew Ranches in Young-town, Alberta. Pictured left is Tim Andrew.

Brent and Jennie Evans from Australia were introduced to Canadian wild life while touring Limousin herds.

Glen Treftz and Warren Symens from South Dakota, USA made a stop at JYF on their way to Agribition.

The CLA office receives numerous inquiries annually from young folks wanting to come to Canada for a “working holiday”. In order to treat everyone fairly, we include all requests in the monthly newsletter, leaving it to interested CLA members to pursue contact with the candidates.

In 2013 Dylan Pintaud spent one month at Andrew Ranches in Youngtown, Alberta, while Simon Bigas made Alexander, Manitoba his home for 6 months at Cochrane Stock Farms.

36

This is one of my favorite times of the year. Writing reports

may be a burden to some, but for me it's a time of reflection and measurement on what has been accomplished and what's at the top of the "to do" list for coming months. There are few tangible undertakings at the CLA, so any opportunity to demonstrate what the organization does for its members, is what keeps staff and directors in check.

Sustainability of the CLA

No doubt that sustainability is the buzz word these days. It

has many definitions and interpretations. I recently heard it described from a speaker at the ALMA Future Fare as "To do more with less". It hit home with me and our situation at the CLA. These wonderful times of high beef prices will affect our organization in the short term as we see less retention of replacements and exodus of breeders who have been waiting for the opportunity to cash in. There are 20% less cows in Canada now than in 2008 when I started at the CLA.

What does that mean for

the CLA? It means restricted revenues, but expectations of the same level of services as before. In other words "Do more with less". I do believe we will find our sweet spot and reach a balance without comprising too much. I also believe we are doing better today than yesterday, but it is my responsibility, with your Board of Directors' guidance to figure out how we are going to be better tomorrow.

One thing that hasn’t changed for a few years, is the quality

of member service. Dallas and Devra are the pillars at the office that take care of all your registry needs allowing me to pursue other accomplishments.

Highlights of 2013

As reported earlier, the formation of the

Commercial Committee as a continuation of the Spotlight on Limousin Forums will play a major role in the coming years.

The completion of our genomics research projects

and the DNA transition to

SNP were the focus of Breed Improvement in 2013. The change of laboratory brought some new challenges in the first half of 2014 in the completion of these endeavors.

One of the things we have been doing more of,

is investing time in a larger presence on social media (another buzz word). Take a look at the impact of "the one minute in social media word" image. By posting relevant stories, photos, Canadian successes, events etc, we are increasing awareness

of our product which will hopefully translate in marketing opportunity for you. You can all play a role in this endeavor by supplying the CLA staff with material.

Limousin Pride

In the beef pool, it appears that sometimes, it is difficult to keep

our heads above water. Limousin breeders have a great story to tell, but more often than enough we are timid to wave our flag. The 45th anniversary of the CLA seems like a great opportunity to launch a Limousin pride

campaign to embrace who we are and what we do. It takes a thousand voices to tell one story and our points of differentiation is where it all begins. Together, we are big enough to be meaningful and our family is small enough to be flexible. We encourage you to show your Limousin Pride every day and share it with us in photos. Your efforts will be showcased in the newsletter, Limousin Voice and on social media.

Thank you!

I would like to thank Kelly Yorga for his three

years on the board. Kelly's focus has been helpful in developing the latest print ads. His leadership on the breed improvement activities were also greatly appreciated.

Back in April, Luc Forcier resigned from the CLA

Board as he was preparing for his herd dispersal. Luc brought not only the Quebec perspective to the table, but his legal expertise also. Thank you Luc for your time with us.

I commend those who work hard every day to make

the Canadian Limousin what it is. I also thank you for the support you show your breed organization.

“...do more with less. It is my responsibility, with your Board of Directors’ guidance to figure out how we are going to be better tomorrow. ”

What is the Straw Man Strategy? The Straw Man Beef Industry Strategy is an industry-led, collaborative group effort designed to carve out a competitive, sustainable and profitable cattle and beef industry in Canada. The Strategy is a starting point for the entire Canadian beef industry to become stronger, healthier and more equipped to meet the expectations of domestic and international customers and consumers.

In order to understand what the Straw Man Beef Industry Strategy is, one must also understand what it isn’t. It isn’t a new industry organization, a private enterprise or a government agency. It’s simply a process to develop an industry strategy or a platform from which Canada’s beef industry can become more competitive, more profitable, more synergistic, and more aligned to meet the demands and expectations of consumers and customers.

It’s so simple that it seems complicated, but the Straw Man Beef Industry Strategy is simply the continually evolving result of a series of brainstorming sessions with individuals involved in many different sectors of the Canadian beef industry. Packers, cow-calf producers, feeders, genetics and retailers are sitting together at the same table to develop new strategies for a more solid foundation from which we can all go forward and prosper.

Anyone can get involved – all we ask is that you show up with your thinking cap on, and your heart in the right place.

Update: Animal Pedigree Act Consultations

Dear Industry Stakeholder,As you may be aware, consultations on possible changes to the Animal Pedigree Act (APA) are underway. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) is guiding these discussions, led by Mr. John Ross, Director of the Animal Industry Division.Staff from AAFC has had the opportunity to meet with more than 20 associations and sector non-governmental organizations over the last month. Utilizing a PowerPoint presentation to guide the discussions, we have been outlining why the review is being undertaken and next steps, discussing the scope of the Act and exploring how specific groups comply with or administer the various requirements of the Act. Specifically, the consultations have focussed on the following themes:1. Coverage of the APA2. Prescriptive nature of the Act3. Authority for a single registry per breed4. Limitations on registrants and species5. Value of registration6. Compliance and Enforcement7. Cost recoveryTo date, these exchanges have proven to be very useful in helping AAFC shape its thinking on the Act’s future. The Department is committed to meeting with interested individuals, organizations or associations to gather viewpoints and solicit feedback on options for the Act. As such, should you be interested, we would encourage you to contact John Ross to arrange for a meeting – either as individuals or as groups. Mr. Ross can be reached by email at [email protected]. Meetings can take place in person or via conference call.It is the intent to conclude this consultation phase by the end of June 2014

2013 was a Supreme year for Limousin in BC, from

shows to sales; we were very well represented in all areas of the province!

In early April, the Peace Country Limousin Breeders

held their 24th Annual Bull Sale in Dawson Creek, B.C. It is the only all Limo bull sale in B.C. and the 24 bulls averaged over $3000. They would like to thank their volume buyer Danny Soles for purchasing two bulls and two heifers. There were also four Limousin bulls consigned to the 75th Annual Williams Lake Bull Show and Sale who averaged $3400.

Limousin was once again well represented at some

of B.C.’s premier agriculture exhibitions. North Peace Fall Fair, Dawson Creek Exhibition, Bulkley Valley Exhibition, and Interior Provincial Exhibitions all saw Limousin entries in 2013. Some of our provincial 4-H shows also had Limousin animals receiving champion banners.

Limousin reigned Supreme in three shows in 2013. “Ivy’s

You Belong With Me” and her Xtractor heifer calf, exhibited by Pinnacle View Limousin, w e r e c r o w n e d

S u p r e m e Champion Female at the Dawson C r e e k Exhibition. “CJSL Xcite 3 5 3 X ” and her We s t w i n d h e i f e r

calf, owned and exhibited by Pinnacle View Limousin took two Supreme titles including the second in a row at the Bulkley Valley Exhibition and qualified for the RBC Beef Supreme challenge at the IPE. This is the first time Limousin has achieved this honor.

BC Limousin breeders consigned two females to the

3rd Annual Pacific Invitational All Breeds Female sale. The sale was held in Williams Lake, B.C. on September 28, 2013. The all breed jackpot heifer show at the sale was once again won by a Limousin heifer calf consigned by Pinnacle View Limousin, and purchased by Richmond Ranch.

That is all I have to report from this side of the

Rockies!

Our first show since the last CLA AGM was the

Manitoba Livestock Exhibition (MLE) in Brandon. There was a good showing of the Limousin breed. We are very proud that a Limousin female owned by Campbell Limousin won the Supreme over all breeds.

We had our own AGM in January in Brandon with

four other breeds and shared an evening of supper and socializing. Anne was also there to represent the CLA and we thank her for that. We decided to add more classes to our show this fall at MLE. If anyone is interested in what we have to offer, please contact Mark Angus. Brad Hockridge from Hockridge Farms of Dauphin has joined the board. We have eight junior members this year.

Sherry Daniel and Jay-Dean Smyth took in a couple of

trade shows with the booth in

January. We still are running our newsletter four times a year. If anyone is interested in putting an ad in or would like to receive the newsletter they may speak to Cheryl McPherson. We changed up our award this year and thought we would open it up to whomever promoted the Limousin Breed in Manitoba. This year’s recipient was Poplarview Stock Farms.

Winter seemed never ending and spring was

short and quite cold, but we made it! The price of cattle is at an unbelievable place right now and I hope the future stays strong. I am still happy to be raising Limousin c a t t l e . Hope to see you down the road.

The Alberta Limousin Association wrapped up

2013 on a high note hosting the National Limousin Show at Farmfair. It was a busy few days in Edmonton with the Pen Show, Bonanza Gold Show, Last Man Standing Jackpot and Pacesetter Sale all happening within a 3 day period.

Once again Limousin were well represented

in the all breed events and con-gratulations to all exhibitors who came out to fill the barns with one of the strongest sets of Limousin cattle we have seen at Farmfair. The National events brought out some new exhibi-tors from and outside of Alber-ta and we welcome them back as we start to prepare for the 2014 Bonanza Gold Show.

As we moved into the first part of 2014 it brought a

very long winter but some high averages in sale rings at bull sales across the province. And we look forward to the opti-

mism within the association as we hear about the upcoming fall sales.

After a very successful Field Day in 2013, Tif-

fany Richmond took on the task to plan the 2nd Annual ALA Field Day. June 14th saw approximately 85 breeders and Limousin enthusiasts come to-gether to tour cattle at Combest Limousin Farm, Stewart Lim-ousin and Richmond Ranch. It was a beautiful day with a strong set of cattle and some en-tertainment to end off the event with a Funny Money Casino and Auction. Thank you to our hosts and to all who took part to make the day such a great event. We look forward to a new group of hosts in 2015 and invite you all out to join us next Spring.

In conjunction with the ALA Field Day we held

our annual Calendar fund-raising auction. 24 spots were auctioned off to record pric-

es and on behalf of the ALA I would like to thank all bidders and buyers for their continued support in this marketing piece. Watch for your calendar this Fall!

And that brings us to Summer filled with Ju-

nior activities, the Western Ca-nadian Junior Conference was held during Summer Synergy in Olds and we are cheering on all the juniors representing Alberta at the National Junior Show. Good luck to everyone participating!

The Saskatchewan Lim-ousin Association con-

tinued on in 2013 planning for another successful Canadian Western Agribition show and sale. Being back to back with FarmFair International hurt the numbers slightly but the qual-ity of the Limousin breed was strong as ever.

• Judges Ryley and Jill Mader of Carstairs, AB sorted through the strong quality of 36 fe-male entries and 26 bulls.

• The sale managed by Bohrson Marketing Ser-vices was one of depth and excitement as the total 19 lots averaged $6,168.42, 13 live lots averaged $7,323! Full results of show/sale can be viewed at http://www.agr ibit ion.com/l ive-stock-2/2013-results/

Other Limousin high-lights at CWA:

• The show was dedicated to the late Leone Kar-wandy-Hagel. During the show a presentation was made to David, Bill and the rest of the fam-ily!

• RPY Paynes Derby ex-hibited by Payne Live-stock made Top 10 in the RBC Beef Supreme Challenge and was the highest selling animal of all breeds at Agribition.

• Juniors that exhibited in the Junior Beef Extreme were Riley Bohrson, Mark Lustig, Will Pil-grim, Angus Smyth and Jules Smyth. All did a tremendous job exhibit-ing Limousin females in the Interbreed Division. Will Pilgrim had Reserve Champion Interbreed fe-male born in 2013.

• Angus Smyth and team were Reserve Intermedi-ate Grooming Team.

• Anchor B Limousin had Champion Limousin in the First Lady Classic Show

• Kozroski Ranch was awarded the Saskatche-wan Limousin Associa-tion Commercial Cattle Producer of the year for 2013.

• We had more Interna-tional traffic than previ-ous years

Thank you to all our volunteers and spon-

sors who help make things go smoothly at CWA!

We are half way through the 2014 year and the

next few months are sure to be exciting for the Limousin breed in Saskatchewan. As this book-let comes out we will be near-ing or at the CJLA Conference in Saskatoon, SK. Planning for this event has continued on successfully and we are excited to see all the juniors participate and visit with fellow Limousin breeders across Canada!

It is my pleasure to extend greetings from the Ontario

Limousin Association and re-port on the activities of our pro-vincial association. During the summer of 2013 we celebrated our 40th Anniversary with a banquet held in conjunction with our Limousin Field Day hosted by BeeZee Acres, Bill and MaryAnne Zwambag and Family at Glencoe.

The Ontario Provin-cial Show was held in

Markham in October. This new venue was well received by both exhibitors and spectators alike. 65 head were exhibited after a junior show that had lots of participation. A pizza party prior to the show carried on

CLA Annual General Meeting

40th anniversary celebrations. After a resounding success it was decided we would return for the 2014 Provincial Show to be held on Sunday, October 5, 2014.

2013 was the 35th annu-al Limousin Show at the

Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. 26 Breeders exhibited in the show. A junior show was also held at the RAWF with 29 Ju-

niors participating. The 2014 show will be on Saturday No-vember 8th.

Our 2014 day planner carried on the 40th an-

niversary theme and includes some pictures and highlights from the last 40 years. There

are still copies available. Con-tact an OLA director to get your copy. Completing our 40th cel-ebrations was the production and sale of limited edition 40th anniversary silver belt buckles and 40th anniversary Limousin ball caps.

Our annual meeting was held Feb 22, 2014 in

Tavistock, On. The afternoon program included an open fo-rum on future direction for the association. The membership asked that the board explore revamping of our Ontario web-site and organizing an Ontario Limousin Sale. The Margaret Madget Limousin Breeder of the Year was presented to Lisle Limousin, Jim & Deb Gollinger and family of Lisle, On.

The 2015 National Junior Limousin conference

and the CLA AGM will be host-ed in Ontario. Date and place are TBD and will be announced in the Voice, CLA and OLA websites. We look forward to working with our Juniors Mem-bers in this endeavour and vis-iting with our fellow Limousin breeders from across the coun-try.

With stronger cattle markets, we have seen

a positive demand for breeding stock which was evident in re-cent sales hosted by individual breeders. Promotion of the Limousin Breed continues to be forefront with our board.

Thank you to Anne Bur-gess and the CLA for

their support and assistance over the last year. Once again, congratulations to the Cana-dian Limousin Association on another successful year and we trust you will have a very pro-ductive Annual General Meeting.

The Quebec Limousin As-sociation met 3 times in

2013. Two of the Directors have also taken on additional du-ties; Claude Lavallee represents the breed at the provincial beef breeds committee and Luc Forci-er represents the province at the CLA.

The QLA had a presence at Expo Bœuf in Victoriaville

in October with several members of the Association on the site. Those who were present on the Friday attended the official open-ing banquet.

A Genetics Day was held on October 2, 2013 at Noble

Limousin of St - Basile, Portneuf. The farm hosted future agrono-mists, beef producers and stake-holders of two regions. This day was designed to put into prac-tice the concepts of genetics and breeding selection as well as an open dialogue on various topics affecting producers and the daily beef business.

The Quebec Farmers Union Open House included a

successful beef component for a second consecutive year. Ferme SDJ, a Limousin breeder repre-sented the beef sector among the other agricultural productions found in the province of Quebec.

Indeed, some 36,000 visitors were able to familiarize themselves with the Limousin cattle breed worthily represented by a few cows along and their calves in the heart of Montreal.

Limousin bulls sold publi-cally at two test station auc-

tion salesFeb 16 in St-Martin where 18

bulls averaged $3439 and April 13 at the Unique Bull Test Station where 17 head averaged $ 2829.

Dany & Mario Simard and family generously agreed

to host Limousin breeders at their farm in Ste-Sophie de Lév-rard for the annual field day. Mr. Simard took the opportunity to show off his new facilities. He ex-plained how the new windbreaks, calf shelters and high and low density corral walls work. The day continued with a pasture tour where visitors were able to enjoy the quality of the herd as well as his crops. Yet again, the goal of the field day was reached by of-fering a wonderful family venue with the opportunity to exchange and share common interest of the Limousin breed. Thanks to the organizers for this memora-ble day and also all visitors who made it what it is.

We published a Limousin breeders’ directory that

is distributed across Quebec. It is a reference and promotional tool very appreciated by breeders and buyers.

We placed print advertis-ing in the weekly farm

paper and took full advantage of the association section to keep everyone informed of our activ-ities. We also made sure to have a Quebec report in every issue of the Limousin Voice.

We are proud to say that all the objectives of our

provincial association were met in 2013. We invite you to visit our Limousin Bull Test Station, where we feed some of the very best in Quebec. We have also ex-panded to include bulls of other continental breeds such as Cha-rolais and Simmental.

The MLA donated a small token to each of

the juniors that chose to exhibit a Limousin animal at the Beef Expo or the Provincial show in N.S.

The MLA had a display at the New Brunswick

Beef Conference in Moncton N.B. March 28 & 29th; they also had a display at the Nappan bull sale in April.

Joe Cooper and his son William hosted their sec-

ond annual sale at the Atlantic Stock Yards in Truro on April 3, 2014. They saw an outstand-ing sale average of $3,965 on the 10 Limousin bulls that they put on offer. High seller going for $5,100 was an ATJ Polled

Ultrasound son out of a JDK KFH Hell Ya dam. He was a 2 year old bull that boasted a 60 lb birth weight combined with a 4.76 ADG on test. Their sec-ond high seller was a Black Riv-er bred bull that sold for 4,200. Again a 2 year old, with an 83 lb birth weight that had an ADG on test of 4.79.

The Nappan Bull sale was April 5, 2014.

The CLA Board is proposing a by-law change regarding protoporphyria testing of donor dams.

The word “Sire” to be replaced by “Animal (s)” in sections 70, 71, 72 and 73.

71. Once an animal is test-ed carrier or diseased, either after the original test if the owner fails to proceed with a retest within the time limits set out in Article 70 above, or after the retest has been completed where the owner pro-ceeds with a retest, then the Asso-ciation shall place the bull's name on its list of all animals which have a protoporphyria test.

72. The Association shall keep a list of all animals tested for protoporphyria and the results of such test, and shall make such list available to any Member who re-quests same.

73. Notwithstanding any of the provisions of this section, the Association shall have the right to require retests on any animal at any time provided that such retest shall be performed at the expense of the Association.
